Evan Turner - Stays or Goes?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you think Evan Turner isnt NBA ready youre a selfish OSU homer who wants a kid to forgo millions of dollars just so he can help the team you root for win.

Evan Turner could step into the Cavaliers rotation tomorrow.

I don't see why it would be deemed as "stupid". There is nothing stupid about going back to college and receiving a degree. I don't see anything wrong with going back to college to finish off your career as a student and as a player, and to do something special, like Doug has already stated. Our entire Starting line up would be coming back if he were to as well, and add to that a top recruiting class in the nation.
If he stays and shows more improvement on his jumper (because this year he really did improve his shot, his mid range is deadly. Also showed he can hit 3s when needed), he would easily be the #1 pick imo.

Its called money or no money. Usually when you choose no money over money it can be deemed "stupid". Especially when you really can't improve the money by staying. Simple concept.

There is nothing wrong with going back, but it would still be considered stupid to the vast majority of people who understand the concept of money.

I think he ultimately leaves. He can always come back and finish his degree later as may other pro athletes do. Regardless as it has been stated OSU is going to be sick next year

Decision Time Looms For Turner, Buford

As the final buzzer sounded and Tennessee celebrated its victory against Ohio State in the Sweet 16, thoughts turned almost immediately to the future plans of junior guard Evan Turner and sophomore guard William Buford. BuckeyeSports.com has the immediate thoughts from each of the players on what the future might hold.

ST. LOUIS – Throughout his Ohio State career, Evan Turner has said he wants to be remembered for accomplishing big things.
Now he literally has a chance to put his money where his mouth is. The junior guard for scored 31 points in a Sweet 16 contest with Tennessee, but it was not enough as the Buckeyes dropped a 76-73 decision.

Immediately, the attention turned to Turner and his future. The Big Ten’s player of the year and a leading candidate for national player of the year honors, Turner is widely projected as one of the top potential NBA draft picks should he decide to go pro.

After the game, however, Turner said he could not put a percentage on his chances of returning for one more year in Columbus.

“I can’t give a percentage right now,” he said. “This is just sticking in my head. I really don’t want to go out like that. I don’t even know.”

Turner and junior forward David Lighty spoke only at a podium and were not made available for individual interviews.

Sophomore guard William Buford, also a candidate to head to the NBA, said he plans on returning for his junior season and said Turner is aware of that fact.

“He knows I’m coming back,” Buford said (glad to see this). “That’s up to him if he wants to do that. It’s his future. He knows I’m coming back.”

Asked if he felt he would have people in his ear telling him to turn pro, Buford said, “Probably, but I only listen to me. I’ve got my own mind. We’ve got a real good team coming in next year. I’m going to try to soak this up and go on to next year.”

During his tenure at OSU, Turner has helped capture an NIT title as a freshman and then led the Buckeyes back into the NCAA Tournament as a sophomore only to fall to Siena in a first-round overtime loss.

This year’s team captured a share of the Big Ten regular-season title and won the conference’s postseason tournament. In the process, OSU established itself as one of the top contenders for the national championship.

His final two shot attempts came as he tried to knot the score in the final seconds, but neither three-pointer found the bottom of the net. After drawing contact but no foul with about two seconds left in the game, he remained lying on the floor for a moment before picking himself up and walking directly to the team’s locker room.

Junior guard Jon Diebler was asked if the way the season ended would make it more likely for Turner to return.

“I think so, because he’s a competitor and he hates losing,” said Diebler, who is also Turner’s roommate.
“He knows how far we could’ve gotten this year. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Yeah, we got to the Sweet 16 but as a group we had higher expectations.”

Senior guard P.J. Hill, who served as Turner’s seldom-used backup this season, said he thinks Turner will return for another year.

“He said he’s coming back, so that’s what we’re planning on: that’s he coming back,” Hill said. “He’s been saying that he’s going to come back but he wants to focus on this season and deal with everything else next year but he’s going to be back. I plan on him being back.”

After averaging 17.3 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior, Turner contemplated heading to the NBA but opted to return. Among the reasons he cited was that he had not won much during his career, saying he wanted to be known for bringing titles back to OSU.

As he celebrated on the floor at Value City Arena after earning a share of the conference title March 2, fans chanted “one more year” as he accepted the trophy. He gestured to the crowd with one finger in the air and mouthed, “one more?” while grinning. After the game, he said he was not sure what the fans were saying and was asking them to repeat themselves.

Head coach Thad Matta said he will not talk Turner into returning, instead encouraging him to do what is right for him and his family.

“I think that the challenge right now is he and I just sitting down and having a conversation of where his mind is and what exactly he wants to do,” the coach said. “I told him, ‘You better hang on – there’s going to be people coming at you.’ They’re like vultures out there right now.

“I would venture to say that by the time we get back to the hotel, it will be a who’s who trying to get to him and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.

“What he’s given this program and the three years he’s been here, it’s truly amazing and I love the kid. And I’m going to do what’s right for him and what he wants to do.”

Turner ends the season averaging 20.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists. All were team highs. In the locker room after the game, his teammates said his play this season never reflected the fact that he has the chance to be a top NBA draft pick.

“I think that’s why he’s been so successful,” Diebler said. “I think a lot of guys in his position have a tendency to talk about the next level and as they’re still playing it can affect how they’re playing right now. They can still be in the tournament and they’re thinking about going to the NBA.

“Evan was not like that. His focus was on this basketball the whole team.”

I'd love to see him stay but we're just being selfish...

The kid almost broke his neck this year, some freak injury and his future disappears as quickly as it rose to the height it is now. Yeah sure Mom wants him to get a degree and while that's important, how can you honestly gamble on like 4-5m a year for 4 years?

Get the degree later take the millions while they're being tossed at you.

There's no reason to stay vs not staying...

When you have the winning lottery ticket you have to cash that in... This guy is a top 5 pick.. Not first round, not fringe lottery, but a lock for top 5 and probably top 2 or 3 depending on who lands at what particular spot..

He has BEEN gone since the beginning of this season.

Hate to go out without a championship, but he's a top 3 pick and he's gone.

Simple.

If Buford can take the next step and Craft and Sullinger are the real deal, they could make a hell of a run next season. They'll have much more depth and two solid additions to the front court.

For some reason I don't think ET is going to materialize to top-5 pick material. I see Iguodala as his ceiling, and even then I'm not sure he'll be as good as Iguodala because he's not as athletic. He's a nice player, for sure, but part of the reason he was so good in college was because he's 6'7 and can handle the ball. Newsflash: 6'7 players who can handle the ball in the NBA are everywhere.

He's good at almost everything, but he doesn't have that one thing that stands out and sets him apart like the other projected top 5 picks:

Wall: crazy athleticism, speed
Cousins: Amazingly athletic for his size, extremely strong, pretty good post game already
Favors: again amazing athlete for his size, already has a lot of moves/ways to score for a 6'10 18-19 year old

Not to say that ET won't be good. I think he's definitely going to be a good player in the NBA. I just think you'd really ave to need a wing in order to take him top 3, maybe in top 5. Wes Johnson, Aldrich, Ed Davis all can have arguments made for taking ahead of ET.

I'd say by far and away his greatest attribute is his mid-range game, whether that is looked at as highly in comparison to other attributes I don't know, but he's money inside the 3-point line from any spot.

That's certainly a key, but how many of those jumpers are coming over 6'7" defenders? Most of the opposing teams have to throw their biggest guards on ET because they simply don't have a 6'7" athlete to throw on him and their PF/C aren't quick enough to stay in front. In the NBA, he won't have this advantage.

It's like when CP3 was guarding LeBron the other day. LeBron acted like CP3 wasn't even there and just jumped up and shot over him.

Basically all I'm saying is there's a big difference between dominating 6'3" college guards because of his ability to handle the ball on the perimeter and going against NBA wings like Artest, Battier, LeBron, Carmelo, iguodala etc. that guard players with good ball skills that are 6'7 almost every game.

If he stays...WOW...my favorite college basketball teams will be 2 of the three most talented, other one being Memphis.

A knack to get to the basket despite size difference (and get there easily) should be accounted for. Evan has an all around game that is sprouting before our eyes and his game is not finished being honed.
I think it is ignorant to say that he doesn't have any attributes that are attractive because if that was the case, he wouldn't have pulled his team to where it got.

you're getting a bit ahead of yourself:)

Memphis has the top rated recruiting class for next year.*

*Until all of Kentucky's players leave and they get all the currently top-rated uncommitted players
