Farewell to Sergey Karasev

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Agreed, Minnesota, with a pass first PG and a gaping hole at SG and SF is a far more ideal situation for Muhammed.

So we pick based on what's best for other teams? Didn't know that's how it worked.

It's also just a fallacy for Gourikmo to put claim that we "passed on him" or "could have had him" if we wanted, regardless of whether Muhammed goes on to be an all star or a bust.

Do you know what a fallacy is? Nothing about what I'm saying is illogical at all. It is a fact that the pick was available and had been for over a week. The order of the pick was not relevant as they didn't even keep the pick, they traded it, and then drafted (at 18) a player they aren't planning on keeping.

They wanted no talent from this draft whatsoever, and they'll be keeping no players.

It's like you're blind to the fact that the trade was there and the Mavericks did not want talent in return, it was a pure salary dump. To say Boston had only offer the Mavericks would've accepted ignores the assets we could've moved including the future Sac 1st rounder, which we might not ever see, but has more value than the 2nd rounders that Dallas won't even use.

And what did we ultimately get out of the 2nd round?? Nothing.

Again, they didn't care about draft order or talent. The Cavaliers didn't trade for the 13th pick because they didn't want it. There man was Karasev and the writing was on the wall that he'd be there at 19.

And if you're thinking of asking would I have traded the Sac pick for Muhammad, the answer is I would've at least worked the fucking kid out to make a plan before the draft. Maybe we take him, maybe not, but we didn't. I don't think Grant wanted anything to do with him whatsoever, even though we had two picks, and I think that's why Boston traded with the Mavericks and not us. He was never on the Cavaliers board, not at #13, not at #19.

I also believe the many reports floating in the media that says the Cavaliers not being able to make deals was because Chris Grant tried to play hardball and it backfired in his face.

p.s.
Marion wasn't opting out of a $9M deal, no matter what he says. He's not getting anything close to that in his next contract. But that's another discussion entirely.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Are we sure this guy wants to come to the NBA for 1.3Mil a year? I gotta think he's going to get some significantly bigger offers to stay in Russia. I've got some concerns about the Cavs chances of inking him to a contract this summer.

I think he will be in the NBA this season. During his interview after being drafted and was speaking with Battier he talked of how AK47 told him if you have the opportunity to play in the NBA you take that chance and run with it.

It sounds like he wants to play in the NBA, though, and that's what it really comes down to for a lot of guys.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Hope everybody has had a chance to see this kid play in highlights or whatever. His feel for the game is phenomenal, honestly can't believe he dropped to 19. This will be the draft we all remember when we are in the playoffs with a dynamic offense and good team defense.

The guy flew in from Russia for like 12 hours just so he could get up on the stage and shake David Stern's hand. Pretty sure he also said in his interview he's expecting to come play this year. Can't say I'm that worried.

Neither Bennett or Karasev are projected to be world-beaters on defense.

Team defense isn't predicated on individual shot blockers or lock down defenders. Mike Brown will finally be teaching this team proper positioning and rotations, which goes a longer way than you may think.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Absolutely pumped about this pick...We finally will have some spacing and shooters...This pick made my night.

It bummed me out big time. There's a huge downside risk here. He was falling in the draft because he might not ever come to the NBA. There's a chance he only joined the draft to help his agent get more money in Europe. Think Fran Vasques.

Draft express is saying there better than an 80% chance that he comes over. Keep your fingers crossed, because the kid will have to leave a bunch of money on the table next season to come to the NBA. NBA rules prevent the Cavs from offering more than $1.3 Mil until 2017.

Not sure about Karasev, but I think Bennett has the strength and athleticism to be a good defender under a coach that holds him accountable. For that matter, I think Waiters is another guy who will be a solid defensive player (maybe even a good one) under Mike Brown. Waiters was a good defensive player in college, and he seems like the type who, once he buys in, will play hard on both ends of the court.

I think what we have to keep in mind is that Byron Scott not only did not hold players accountable (and if he did, it was ridiculously arbitrarily done), but he didn't even seem to have a defensive system in place, nor did he seem like he particularly cared to implement one. That won't be the case under Mike Brown. I don't expect an immediate improvement from one of the worst defenses to one of the best, but I do think we'll see a marked improvement on that end of the court from the start of the season. I think the 10-20 range is where we can realistically expect to be this season on defense, and that's a vast improvement over last season's shit show.

Also remember that at least a solid portion of defense is just effort. The coach needs to convince people to give it, though. Byron Scott didn't do that, but Mike Brown has a reputation for getting marginal defenders to at least try on D.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Not that it means a damn thing...but the kid made a point to fly over for the draft, made a comment that his hero AK-47 said to get into the NBA immediately when he had the chance and said he's fully planning on coming over. Then in Grant's post-draft interview he said the kid is coming over now too. I mean, maybe he just got caught up in the moment of just having been drafted...but all indications seem to point to the Cavs wanting to get him over here asap.

Karasev on advice from AK 47: "If you have a chance to come to the NBA, you must go straight. Don't think about nothing. No Europe, No Russia, nothing...just go there. Because here you can grow up, and be a real star here"

Very safe to say he's on the roster

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Not sure why there's talk about Muhammad in this thread (I know he's a SF), considering that he's exactly the kind of player the Cavs have stayed away from (character and so on), they have targeted Karasev for a long time, and they wanted to move up specifically to get Karasev. Holding on to the 2nd round picks was a bonus not a lost opportunity. I don't believe for one minute they ever wanted Muhammad. Just not on the table, so why argue about it? That they didn't want Muhammad in the first place can be criticized, sure, but not the part about trying to trade up for him.

Once the Cavs surprisingly kept the 2nd rounders, I agree that the Cavs didn't use the two 2nd-rounders as effectively as they could have, but that's for a different thread. I do think Mike Brown will really like Felix and find time for him.

I hop you are right.

Here's Vasquez shaking Stern's hand back in 2005 back when he was saying he was going to come to the NBA--
