Farewell to Sergey Karasev

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Not that it means a damn thing...but the kid made a point to fly over for the draft, made a comment that his hero AK-47 said to get into the NBA immediately when he had the chance and said he's fully planning on coming over. Then in Grant's post-draft interview he said the kid is coming over now too. I mean, maybe he just got caught up in the moment of just having been drafted...

He had said the same thing before the draft (interviewed a few times). But Douglar's right that Karasev signing a #19 contract is different from him signing (let's say) a #10 or #13 contract. Might be a factor. We'll see if he really wants to make it in the NBA and/or when.

I hop you are right.

Here's Vasquez shaking Stern's hand back in 2005 back when he was saying he was going to come to the NBA--

How can we be sure that's really him? The man has no face.

:chuckles:

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

I think there are a couple of factors in play that will convince him to still come over this year:

1) He genuinely wants to come over and play in the NBA. Apparently AK47 planted that seed, and it's taken on a big effect on the kid.

2) He understands what type of team he is going to play for. He won't be asked to carry a major load.

3) Similar to 2, he is pretty much in a perfect position to succeed in the NBA with where he will be playing. Playing next to guys like Waiters and Kyrie, Karasev can do whatever he wishes to do on offense. If he views himself as a spot up shooter, there is going to be a TON of room for him on the wing. If he wants to be a dribble drive type player, Kyrie, Thompson, Andy and Bennett are all very good at that type of game.

I see a lot of Mike Miller in Karasev. Sometimes it's hard to remember just how damn good Miller was in his prime, too.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Excellent choice. It shouldn't take long for him to supplant Alonzo Gee as the starting SF. At the very least, he should give opposing team's second units fits.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Are we sure this guy wants to come to the NBA for 1.3Mil a year? I gotta think he's going to get some significantly bigger offers to stay in Russia. I've got some concerns about the Cavs chances of inking him to a contract this summer.

Definitely a concern. However, I've watched every post-selection interview Karasev had, and in every one he says that he wants to come straight over, that his father and AK47 have advised him to do so, and seemed very sincere in these answers and his comments about how he could contribute to the Cavs, fit in Cleveland, etc. (much more sincere and thought-out than I think a non-native English speaker would sound if this was a ruse.)

I would prefer him to stay in Russia for a year or two and bulk up to sf size and work on his shooting even more. That being said, i see him coming here. He doesnt have to pay for an out clause and most Euro's dream of playing in the NBA too.

I don't mind this line of thinking, but he is at a crucial stage of his development and has already shown he can hang with his American peers. I think he wants to play against the best, and i think that will be best for his development. The Cavs have minutes for him right now, and quite frankly a need for a guy with his skills.

He will have access to a better training program here in America. I don't think staying Russia will be much of a benefit to him at this stage of his development.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

If he wants to come over now, I think you bring him over now. Let him grow up with the rest of these kids and learn to play with them.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Can't wait for Karasev to have more of an impact than Otto Porter

Just one time, I want to see a white player compared to someone who isn't white.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

He will play in the NBA next season... Screen shot it, mark my words, do whatever. I guarantee it. :chuckles:

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

And if you're wrong?

They have basically said he is one of the best players right now at 19. That means he needs a bigger challenge. I think you are right. The NBA is his only choice.
