Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Good call. I'd be very happy if Zeller can produce similar to Hibbert. My point still remains.... There just aren't many seniors that make it anymore.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Just going to repost this here:

NBA Draft Quotes From Anonymous Scouts: Tyler Zeller as Top 7 Pick, and Dion Waiters as Dwyane Wade | The Big Lead

Among the highlights were the thoughts on North Carolina center/forward Tyler Zeller:

“Beast. I personally have him in the top seven. He’s a 13- to 14-year NBA center. He can shoot, he’s strong, he runs. Everybody complains they can never find a center. Well, here he is. There’s absolutely no scenario where he’s not going to succeed.”

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Sure workouts can tell you some things.

However, these guys are scouted going back to AAU ball. Every college game they ever play is on tape and watchable for scouts and front offices.

Exactly. It's well known that the Cavs scouting department attends more games than the majority of the NBA. I don't put a ton of stock into the fact that neither of these guys worked out for the Cavs. There's only so many workouts you can hold, and there's some players that you either feel so good about that you don't need to see them in person, or that you don't necessarily believe you'll have a chance to draft. The Cavs may have never thought that they'd have a chance to draft Zeller based on where they were in the draft and the fact that he was in their top 10.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I like the pick, wish we could have only given up 24th and one of the second round picks but also getting the SG/SF from the Mavs I like the deal alot. Still not loving the Waiters pick but i'll wait and see how he does on the court before I demand for Grant to be fired.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

this is great i like this, when we get cody zeller next year we have the center postion locked

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Perry Jones was right there.............. oh well! I'll roll with it!

I think a lot of us don't realize it, but we are biased against white basketball players. I think I am, and I'm white. Especially white American basketball players, since they don't really have a great track record in the NBA

Tim Duncan too!

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

He wasn't even considered reasonable in our selections, is it any wonder why he didn't bother to workout for us? That's where the surprise from Grant is important.

Still, this guy seems like he could give us a solid 20-25 minutes a game, maybe 10-8? It's important to solidify the future at center so quickly, but we need to make sure he can get the job done and isn't injury prone. That's an ominous viewpoint that I'd rather not think about for a long time (Z (feet) and Chris Mihm (skills and health) come to mind).

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I really like the look of this kid. Glad we executed the trade with Dallas.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I actually like this pick a lot. I hope he's ready to work!

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

People need to understand one huge thing. Zeller is not Z(talented, but slow and lumbering) or Mihm(soft and stiff).

While not an ultra athlete he runs the floor like crazy.

People are going to be shocked at how much we push in transition with Kyrie, Waiters, Gee, TT, Zeller, and Andy. The team is going to score a ton in transition.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Guy has big hands, lateral quickness and can finish a whole bunch of different ways around the rim. Also has a good mid-range jumper. Pick and roll, pick and pop, pick and slide. Pick and (insert whatever you want here). The only pick move he probably won't do is the pick and ally-oop of the Clippers.

Don't think this was posted...

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Can Zeller shoot the jumper? If so, how well and how deep? Any stat gurus find any numbers on this please?

I believe he was ranked 4th out of 26 big-men prospects in this draft who DX studied in that area. He was something like 1.03-something points per jumpshot, so the numbers are in his favor.

However, it was a small sample size, he didn't shoot many jumpers. It seems like something that is there, that has very good potential, but will ultimately need to fully incorporate it into his game.
