Favorite Sub & Sandwich Shops

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You don't?
Uh.... NO??? I'm old school country, I use a slide rule based upon how far I can spit.

Oh, and someone mentioned Dave's- yeah, that. I haven't been there recently, but the one on Coventry was staple for me when I was in school. His signature sub with the avocado and alfalfa sprouts is crazy good. Tended to burn on the way out, though...

South Side 6... That little quickie mart spot on Napoleon? You are a brave man to eat from that place. Must have the stomach lining and intestines of a God.

South Side 6 has surprisingly good food. Their gyros are great. I didn't really appreciate gyros until I moved to Charlotte, which has a surprisingly large amount of Greek places, or at least places with good gyros. The ones at South Side 6 are really good, and absurdly filling.

I used to live like two blocks away from that place on the corner of Manville and Napoleon.

Anyway, Mister Spots is solid, but as mentioned the wings are actually better than the Philly cheesesteaks there. Don't get me wrong.. they're decent, but the smells that come out of you the next day are comparable to taking down an entire White Castle Crave Case. No one needs that in their life.

Meh. When I go back to Bowling Green, I don't buy wings at Spots. I buy a fucking cheesesteak and cheese fries, and it's goddamn incredible. I can get better wings at half a dozen places around here (if anyone is near Charlotte, the blackened parm wings at Ed's Tavern are the best wings I've ever had), but I have yet to find a cheesesteak that tastes that good in Charlotte. Plus, they get bonus points because I have never gotten a bad order of fries from them, even when they delivered. They were always fresh and crisp and delicious.

Capriotti's is incredible, the capistrami or the bobbi are awesome.

I'll say this: I could eat the bread by itself from Jimmy's. Best bread of the bunch.

That's the main reason I go there. Good bread counts for a lot in a sub. They also use good mayo, not the cheap shit Subway uses that has no flavor. Ultimately Jimmy John's isn't any thing terribly special, but it's good enough to warrant paying six bucks for a sandwich. Their Italian sub with the onions and Italian dressing is pretty good.

But as you said, the bread is what makes them relevant. Well, that and the fact that they somehow seem to have my sub done before I even order it. I remember when I was in Bowling Green and lived at least five minutes from the Jimmy John's there. I could order from them during an apocalyptic blizzard and they'd be knocking on my door in ten minutes or less.

I dont understand the hype over Jimmie Johns. People basically nut over their sandwiches when talking about it. Its cold cuts on bread. Why are people so crazy over something they can make at home in the same amount of time for cheaper...it doesnt make sense to me.
I don't think anyone is hyping them really. I like Jimmy Johns. Never really get tired of it, but am not going to claim its great. I think they are rated so high by default due to the lack of competition. Its not hard to beat out the shit known as Subway and Quiznos.

AS for some of my favorites in the region, I like Dibella's (especially the philly cheesesteak), Potbelly, Dave's, and Penn Station. I am also a fan of Eddies cheesesteak stand down in downtown Akron. I love a good philly cheesesteak.

I've heard good things about this Firehouse place, but have never been to one.

Anyone had a sub from East of Chicago Pizza lately? Its been a solid 3 years since I've had one, but their Italian sub and spicy steak sub used to be orgasmic.

Italian sub from East of Chicago is still great.

It pretty much says everything you need to know about Quiznos that there was one in a prime location in downtown Charlotte next to a lot of successful sandwich places...and it went out of business. I think Subway only stays alive in the same area because it's cheap.

What is everyone's favorite subway sub?

It's more on the west side of the state and SE Michigan area, but I have to throw my hat in the ring for Mancino's grinders. Damn those are good.

As far as chain's go, Penn Station then Firehouse and then Jimmy John's. Subway is garbage. I haven't had some of the others mentioned in this thread.

When I was in Cleveland/Akron this summer, I went to the Diamon Deli in Akron, and it was fantastic. Had the "break the bank" sandwich. The two people I was with also thought the food was great. I didn't see anyone here mention it, but it seemed very popular when I was there, with the line out the door and basically all the tables full.
