Getting Rid of Cable- What am I missing?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just get an antenna for your HDTV. The CW should be real easy to pick up based on the channel number. Also it gives you a backup if YouTube tv isn't working or your WiFi goes out.

I assume you need an antenna anyway to use one of the air players. I would try the antenna first before adding the air player to the equation.

Good call. Going to get one on amazon.

depends on your needs. if you have multiple tv and devices and want to watch OTA channels on multiple devices. then the Airbox might be the best option for ya.

AirTV has a Wifi box youcan hook an antenna to and and a USB device if you want to record( its in beta) and they have an AIrTV player which is like a roku with with a TV tuner attached for single device play.

What I said was I (me myself ). Only subscribe to SlinBlue because I am not gonna pay an extra 20 box for the orange pacage which is essentially ESPN

I also pointed out that ESPN would be needed to watch MLS playoffs and OTA can bring in all the home games except for 2. (one on FS1 and the other on ESPN)

I didn't realize this discussion read was only for people who use YouTube Live.
https://tv.youtube.com/learn/devices/
which btw if you have YouTube live the you should know you already get ESPN and ESPN2 at least. you could sign on to the ESPN app and see if it lets ya watch espn3 if not then you can pay the 5 bucks to watch whatever shows up on ESPN3

that would be a personal choice.

You asked about crew games and I posted but you don't get the CW and I am not sure if you get the ABC MYTV option
From the youtube tv channel list

CW
Video on-demand only in Albuquerque, Austin, Baton Rouge, Buffalo, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Champaign, Chattanooga, Charleston (South Carolina), Charleston-Huntington, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado Springs, Columbia, Columbus, Dallas-Fort Worth, Dayton, Denver, Des Moines, El Paso, Ft. Myers-Naples, Ft. Smith-Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers (Arkansas), Grand Rapids, Greensboro, Greenville (North Carolina), Greenville (South Carolina), Harlingen, Harrisburg, Hartford, Honolulu, Houston, Huntsville-Decatur (Alabama), Indianapolis, Jackson (Mississippi), Knoxville, Lexington, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Madison, Memphis, Miami, Mobile, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Norfolk, Omaha, Paducah-Cape Girardeau-Harrisburg, Phoenix, Portland, Portland-Auburn (Maine), Providence, Richmond, Roanoke-Lynchburg (Virginia), Rochester (New York), Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, Savannah, Shreveport, South Bend-Elkhart (Indiana), Spokane, Springfield (Missouri), St. Louis, Syracuse, Toledo, Tucson, Tulsa, Waco, Washington DC, Wichita, Wilkes Barre

so the AIRTV player or box might be good options for you

YouTube Live and ESPN is available on the AirTV Player but I am pretty sure the AIRTV OTA Box doesn't not include any Google play apps

yes the AIRTV OTA streamer would require an Antenna. which is really nice because some houses have deadspots

I wasw rong about multi streaming it appears you can only have 2 streams of OTA channels at a time with the airtv box but it does allow you to access your feed

HDHomerun device with a winpauge tv tuner might be a better option

I'm moving in a month - first time buying a house! I've been in my current residence (an up/down duplex) for 5 years and have split cable/Internet with the downstairs neighbors. We went from DirecTV to Sling. I'd like to continue to avoid the Comcast/DirecTV companies of the world when I move, but I'd also like to move away from Sling. The connection fucks up too often, and I'm overall just not that impressed, especially since it sounds like there are definitely better options now.

Can anyone help me with pros/cons of YouTube TV vs. Vue vs. Hulu TV vs. similar options? I'll have a couple TV's (living room, bed room), a couple fire sticks (already have 1, will buy another unless someone convinces me to buy another kind). It'll just be me living in the house - so needing to watch the same channel twice at the same time isn't really needed. I already pay for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify. I'll want the ability to record some shows, the ability to watch local stations (local ABC, NBC, etc. - should I just get an antenna for that? I'll also want Fox Sports OH and STO - and yes I'm in the Cleveland area), and a decent array of channels.

Any major differences in terms of price / channels / quality?

The pricing and lineups aren't all that different. I suggest using the free trial to make the decision. The interface and slight changes in channel lineups might be the difference for you. The streaming devices you currently have might make the decision for you.

The added plus with Hulu live is getting Hulu for free and you get YouTube red with YouTube tv. I personally haven't watched any of the YouTube red content.

YouTube tv is the only one with unlimited DVR. Vue has a couple hundred hour limit. Hulu live only has 50 hours and it cost more to upgrade to 200 hours. The unlimited DVR is a big plus for me because I record basically anything that peaks my interest just in case I want to watch it later.

What is that?

Next generation for broadcast tv (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, etc). Basically we can get 720p and 1080i over broadcast tv with an antenna currently. With ATSC 3.0 we can get 4k and possibly 8k down the line. It will also add an over the internet layer (which hasn't been explain that well). Sub-channels can be in 1080p instead of 480p and it should allow for more of them. I think they can currently have 4 sub channels at 480p and it will expanded to possibly 6-8 HD sub channels.

What it all boils down to is 4k for main channels and a bunch of 720p or 1080p sub channels. We get 35+ total channels now with an antenna in cleveland. That might double and they all might be in at least 1080p if we are lucky.

I am getting a 1tb usb drive for about 60 bucks so ill be able to record (I would prefer not to pay 5 dollars a month for 50 hours of recording through their cloud service)

so far 100 bucks for the airtv (Android TV) player (got 50 dollars off of sling TV) and Adapter
25 bucks a month for Sling TV Blue ( no espn but access to regional sports programming)
The antenna was 5 bucks from amazon.
I have Netflix,Amazon and WWE network which I would have with or without cable.

the box includes kodi . so far the amazon app sideloaded hasn't been working . I haven't tried putting In the Amazan kodi add on as of yet. ( kodi runs like crap and I don't think its the boxes fault the playon addon was unusable but I could chromecast from PC with no issues)

I do have the option of disabiling the airTV EPG and using the google live EPG instead with full DVR recording options but this feature is in beta on the slingtv App.

it also has a large font setting that allows the channel options to look bigger if people have problems seeing them.

The control is simple and intuitive. you can access a mini channel guide while watching a show or go to the full screen guide .

so far not a single complaint from the Woman who s not technically inclined and can use it easily.

OTA Channel Lineup with full EPG
NBC
Ion
Escape
MeTV
Laff
Antenna
ABC
Heroes and Icons
CBS
CW
Charge
Comet
overall 22 channels which isn't too bad considering I live in a rural area.

Sling Blue Channel Line up VS Orange
https://www.groundedreason.com/sling-tv-review-watch-live-tv-online/

Main differences between the two is the the blue offers the FX ,NBA and FS! regional lineups whereas the orange offers ESPN and Disney channels.

When OSU bowl game was on ESPN . I added orange for a week and dropped it later.

during the playoffs . I had other game sources for the espn but those aren't reliable and may not be there the next espn event I want to watch

I have DSL internet and playing a MMORPG and have seen no noticeable skipps or play issues with the sling channels at this time. Of course I got a Draytek Modem and a Trendnet AC router,

I have a plug in wired connection but I haven't had to use it because the WIFI has been just fine.

Whats really nice is YouTube Live and playstation Vue both work on the box. so your not stuck with just slingtv as a subscription service option.

I didn't test Hulu . why Hulu Live wasn't set up to work within Android TV and their approach to live streaming has me baffled. still at the very least I can chromecast to the box if I decided to go that option somewhere down the line. (Netflix might be taking a similar route)

so as of right now. im getting integrated OTa and internet cable EPG with my most of my favorite apps ( Damn you and your licensing AMC) for
SlingTV 25 dollars
Netflix 10.99
WWE network 10.00
Amazon Prime 8.25

for around 54.25 a month

DSL Internet is 99 per month with 2 lines

not many internet options where I Live.

I subscribed to Amazon prime because I was having a hard time finding things to watch on Netflix and YouTube tv. I finally found the UHD section to take advantage of my 4k tv. I had seen 4k content on my TV before but I had to focus to notice the difference.

Then I got to shows and movies with HDR and I finally see the worth in upgrading. The difference in the range of color is pretty amazing. It's something you didn't realize you were missing. It's like the jump from SD to HD except it's shades of color. I notice that the Greens and yellows the most. Also dark scenes have are different too, the depths of blacks and greys make it a much more complete picture.

Anyone try the Amazon fire TV Recast? It seems interesting. I know there are similar product on the market but the ability to record 4 shows at once on the higher model is was is interesting to me.

Networks are going to pull their content from Netflix and put it on their own service. Friends, The Office and Parks and Rec are the most popular shows and NBC owns the rights them. In the end, I think pirating makes a big comeback.

I thought this was the more appropriate thread to talk about this. I think it's an interesting topic and with what I'm going to say will most likely take it complete out of the sports sphere.

I do think some of the parent companies of these old sitcoms will threaten to pull their content from Netflix and some might actually do it. I also think just like syndication that they will be willing to spread it around to max their profits. Friends for instance just got that 100 million per year from Netflix, which I thought was alot but then I saw Courtney Cox on David Dobriks vlog and it didn't even seem to phase her when some congratulated her about it. I digged alittle deeper and found each of the friends cast get 20 million each per year just on royalities. Warner's makes 1 billion a year on friends so the 70 million extra per year from Netflix from the original 30 million a year isnt a huge amount for the cast, probably alittle over a 1 million each.

I also think there has been a buzz within the teen age group about watching friends. Another old sitcom can take that place if Netflix wants to push it and try to create a buzz.

It's pretty crazy. Right before Hulu a lot of networks had free streaming online. ABC had a really good service and you could watch anything on demand. It was awesome.

I'm sure it will go that way. It is already pretty annoying how many there are.

I actually think it might cycle back to letting people watch it for free with on demand. It's actually part of Atsc 3.0. I think alot of the streaming service will fail or not be as profitable as ads driven watching.

The problem with streaming ads before were the lack of targeted ads. It was all national ads and they got repeative so it annoyed people. Part of ATSC 3.0 is the ability to use location services and viewing habits to figure out more targeted ads. It should open up a revenue stream of ads from small local businesses. Like the Chinese restaurant or local pizza joint down the street that never could afford to even out put up a tv ad because they only had one location, should now be able to target your neighborhood and/or their delivery zone. It should be alot cheaper than an ad that goes out to the whole broadcast zone for a local TV station but as a whole it should bring in more money.

Netflix is working harder on their own content because they know that day may come.
