Grantland on the Cavs (2 new pieces on K-Love)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lowe: They get the top spot in spite of the ugliest uniform/court design combination in the league. That’s how excited we are for these guys. I can hear Austin Carr cackling from 500 miles away.

I love you Lowe, I really do

Shawn Marion is done Simmons? That's news to me!

He's got a decent chance at being right. Marion will be 37 in the spring and Father time is undefeated.

Simmons is also an idiot to say 'blah' to getting Heywood.. he apparently doesn't know the reason we acquired him, because it had nothing to do with him as a player.

Just wait until next summer when Simmons is salivating about all the possibilities Haywood will offer on the Trade Machine.

The thing about Simmons is that his strength is being a fan writing to fans, not an expert. Agree or disagree about Marion, I thought he was on target about why the Cavs are going to be such a great FAN experience this year. (He did uncharacteristically miss out on Dion Waiters though, who offers all kinds of fascinating fan possibilities this year -- good or bad, the Dion Waiters Experience is going to be really really interesting this year).

They actually mentioned Dion in the description of the ratings system they were using. :chuckle:

Category No. 5: Unintentional Comedy/Irrational Affection/Personality Intangibles
This intentionally vague category covers moments like “Enes Kanter just took his 10th 3 of the night,” “Byron Scott is defending Phoenix’s 3-guard offense with Jeremy Lin, Nick Young and Steve Nash right now,” “Boris Diaw is feeling it,” any text or tweet that simply reads “Dante Exum!!!!,” “Marcus Smart just dove for a loose ball and inadvertently took out the scorer’s table while down 25 with 90 seconds to play,” “Giannis is starting at point guard,” “Dion Waiters is feeling it!,” “Dirk just made his seventh straight one-legged fall-away,” “Blake Griffin just tried to dunk over four Warriors at the same time,” “Zach LaVine’s dunk from three minutes ago has already generated 220 comments on NBA Reddit,” “Jamal Crawford is feeling it,” “Kenneth Faried is playing tonight like terrorists told him he had to grab 30 rebounds or they were burning down his house,” all “STEPHEN CURRY HEAT CHECK!” texts, “Stan Van Gundy called a 20 just to stare down Josh Smith for 20 seconds,” and “Ricky Rubio has apparently decided that he’s only throwing alley-oop passes in tonight’s game.” You know, the stuff that makes the NBA’s regular season resonate with the true junkies every night.

I'm not necessarily saying Marion is done, and I know this is the preseason, but he has looked verrrrrrrry old and a beat behind on a ton of plays. I'm sensing a lot of old man YMCA game. Hopefully he is on the coasting through the preseason plan and isn't finished, but I am a little concerned.

I didn't see a lot of Marion last year, but man he looks better than I thought so far. He averaged 20 or more minutes last year, I don't know why he can't excel with 15 or less. He sure as hell doesn't look 37 out there. He is a pretty smooth player, not exactly explosive, but still quick. It makes sense with the way he moves that he hasn't had a lot of injuries to his legs. We will see later in the season, but right now I really like what he brings.

Wow we posted exactly oppsite things at the same time. You think he looks verrrry old and not just old? Must be all the highlight blocks he has had so far.

If every Cavs player was half as good as you think they are, we would have beaten the Spurs last year.

He has two blocks in the preseason. And also the funniest airball in a long time.

He's smooth but he's slow. He doesn't make mistakes but he has a hard time making plays. I think he'll be good for soaking up minutes in the regular season but can't be relied on to execute at a high level in the playoffs.

Barring injury, I don't know how he possibly could.

Marion turns 37 after the regular season ends, it's not unheard of for 36-year-olds to still be positive contributors at that age. Paul Pierce played last season at 36, Kevin Garnett played at 37, and Ray Allen at 38.

Marion started and played over 30+ minutes a night last year for a 49-win team in the West, signing him to the veteran minimum to come off the bench for us is a downright steal. His defensive acumen and position versatility only add to the value he brings to the team. I really don't think Simmons has a decent chance at being right here, the Marion signing was the cherry on top of a sundae for Griffin this summer.
