Help Me Buy a Car.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I used to have a Chevy Lumina with the exact same 3.8 V6 in it! We drove that fucker until it had 200,000 miles on it. It got terrible gas milage but lasted forever. Those were our family cars... Chevy Luminas. At one point we had 3 of them I think. A 1990 eurosport, a '91 and the Z34 with the 3.8 V6. My 1990 has such shitty loose shocks in the back that I could pump on the brakes in my high school's parking lot and make the ass-end of it bounce like it was on hydraulics.

Oh yeah... I used to roll that fucker when I was 16. 2 12" off-brand subs from Ames (its like Wal-Mart on Crack and I worked there!), a minidisc player in the dash, mis-aimed fog lights that shone right up into oncoming driver's faces, and one of those cheesy-ass neon license plate frames (no joke, I had one.) And you know what? I got more blowjobs in that car than any other car I've owned since. Maybe its because it was high school and that was the easiest way to "get some action" back at that age, or maybe, just maybe, it was because of this car's inherent vaginal magnetism.

Just picture me rolling in that bad boy... my American Eagle visor on my head... the wind blowing through the frosted tips on my hair... some Nelly rattling the shit out of my trunk because of my cheap-o Ames subs... Delivering pizza for East of Chicago Pizza while getting a BJ from my girlfriend I had picked up... Those were the days, boys. Those were the days.

EDIT: Must imagine large rust spots on lower doors of above picture for proper effect.

I doubt my old crappy Pontiac Sunfire that smelled like the barn it was found in had any inherent vaginal magnetism. Still, I haven't gotten car blowjobs like that in any car since. It could be that the girl I dated in high school was kind of an exhibitionist and loved road head, or maybe the smell of horse shit is an aphrodisiac. Either way, I miss that car.

I've always meant to try out government surplus auctions:

http://www.akronautoauction.com/

You get a used car that was used by the government, so you know they were taking pretty good care of it. They probably barely used the vehicle with all the sitting around and wasting tax money they do, or had some unionized mechanics on site keeping it in perfect working condition.

Recently bought a car and even though I'm in love with it, a part of me wishes i invested the money wisely as i could have used the money as a down payment for a condo and rented the place out.

Few tips:

1. Narrow your list of choice to three different makes

2. Go on AutoTrader and compare prices and KMs.

3. Do research on your car. How much are oil changes? Do you need winter tires? Does it take Premium gas? Will your insurance rate go up? Call your insurance company and ask for a quote for the type of vehicle you're looking at.

4. Go around the dealerships in your town and look at the cars in person. DO NOT TEST DRIVE THEM YET.

5. You are not buying a pair of new jeans, it's a car. It's a big investment. TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

6. Sleep on it for a day or two and go back and test drive the cars you liked the most. Once again, TAKE YOUR TIME!!!. The dealership will tell you they can help you out with financing or knock a couple thousand off the sticker price but DO NOT make any decision then. Trust me, the car will be there tomorrow and the week after. The dealership will make you feel as if you're buying a one of a kind car. That is not the only make and model that is going to be available for sale in your area.

7. My car is a 2010 and was able to negotiate close to $4,500 off. I could have gotten more but I did not listen to steps 5 and 6. :thumbdown. We talked prices and told them, I'll think about it and that I have been to few other dealers also. Later that evening, the dealerships financing manager called me and left me a message saying they could work out "something" for me. The day i went back, i told him, I was not pleased with the current offer and the entire time I was on my iPad on with the AutoTrader app looking at prices from other places. It's funny, but the iPad clearly bothered the dealer.

One thing you have to remember is this. The dealer will make you feel that they're doing you the biggest favor in the world (especially if your credit isn't ideal) and that this car will be gone from the lot by tomorrow morning. It wont, and i guarantee you it will stay there for the next month or two if you do not buy it. Also, I had a friend call me while i was in the dealership to convince me to not buy the car because his friend had bought the car and his engine blew up etc. :chuckles:

Sidenote: Selling a 2000 / Honda Prelude / Silver / Manual / for $900 Canadian. The car needs a new engine as one of the compressors is not working. If any one of y'all own a shop and can save on labor it's a great deal. PM me if interested.

All good tips, I'll make sure to keep them in mind. I have near perfect credit which is something I have working for me. I've had a credit card since I was 18. I've been using it in place of cash to build my credit and I've never been late on a payment. The only debt I have is federal student loans.

Most people are smart enough to leverage competing car companies against each other: Honda vs Nissan, ford vs Chevy, BMW vs Lexus, etc. Most people don't realize you can do the same thing within a company. Once you decide on what car you want, leverage 2 dealerships under the same umbrella against each other like Mentor Honda vs Bedford Honda. You'll be amazed on what you can get accomplished.

Not going to lie .. I buy what ever the fuck I want, I enjoy my F150 4x4 crew cab...tried going hybrid gave it to my son. I have no CC debt and only owe money on my wife's car a 2013 mustang GT and my new 2012 and my house and nothing else. The bottom line is i need to love what I am driving. That is just me though, to each their own. For the record my mom traded her Lexus GX 470 in on a new Prius two years ago. She gets 45 mpg and loves that car to death. The Honda insite i bought gets my son 40 mpg.

Keep in mind, If your max budget is 20K for the love of god don't get a rinky dink POS just because it's "Brand New" - The second you dive it off the lot 20% of the value is GONE and, by the time you pay it off it won't be worth a fuck (if it doesn't fall apart by then)

For that 20k Econobox you can get a clean and slightly used REAL car with under 60k miles on it and warranty is an option. Hell go CPO (Certified Pre Owned) before you go new. CPO you get a very slightly used set of wheels and you walk off with a better then factory warranty (100k Miles in most cases)

Hell you're young, fresh outta college and no kids? - Go get a Sports Car and drop some panties... for 20K there is a nice G37 Coupe out there with YOUR name on it. I'd personally go 370Z m'self - Since you wanna buy American go get a damned CPO Camaro SS.

Anyone have an opinion on Dodge Chargers? There seem to be some good deals on 2011 used ones CPO.

Nothing about Chargers? They don't get the best mileage I know but I saw one that was a 2008 CPO with less than 50,000 miles that cost about 14 grand. Opinions on Chargers?

I've worked out the math and I've determined I can cover a $300 monthly payment comfortably. I could likely afford more than that but I'd prefer to keep it around 300 as that leaves me with enough money to continuously build up a savings.

There are certainly some advantages to buying new. You get a full warranty for one, which is nice. The dealer I bought my Camaro at puts a 10 year / 100k mile powertrain warranty on every car they sell at no charge. On all Chevy's you get a 5 year/100k mile powertrain warranty from Chevy. If you are going to drive a lot, this would be a good warranty to have as it is 20k/year.

Is your driving highway? Can you drive a stick? I would recommend a Cruze Eco with the stick. This review got 58MPG driving at a speed of 55MPH: http://www.conceivablytech.com/5728/products/chevy-cruze-eco-58-mpg-no-hybrid-magic/2

Note that the automatic Cruze Eco has different gearing than the manual and won't get as good of gas mileage on the highway.

I'm not sure how your company pays for your mileage/trip expenses, but mine pays $0.55/mile but doesn't pay for gas (gas is built in to the $0.55). If you could get 50MPG with the Cruze, you would be getting paid $27.50 per gallon of gas you have to buy on your trips if you get paid the same per mile as I do. I test drove an Eco and liked it quite well, if I wasn't a car nut and didn't love the Camaro I would have ended up with one.

Based on the listings at cars.com within 30 miles of Cleveland, looks like you could get one for about $18.5k without too much hassle: http://www.cars.com/for-sale/new/ch...Nm=price&sf1Dir=ASC&sf2Nm=location&sf2Dir=ASC

And speaking of test driving Chevy's, you can go here and print off a coupon to test drive a Chevy and get a $50 Macy's giftcard for driving one, just make sure you put in the time period that you plan to buy as within 1 month: http://slickdeals.net/f/5577788-50-Macy-s-GC-Chevy-Test-Drive

Keep in mind that if you get the sports car, you will have taken the advice of a poster who doesn't know the difference between formally and formerly.

If you do know the difference, then my apologies, Sir Mycah Leonhart:chuckles:

Chargers are just... "off." My negative bias stems from the fact that they are always available at car rentals, along with that stupid chrysler PT cruiser. It makes me think that demand is low. I guess you could buy low, but for the love of god, drive one first. It looks like a sports car, but drives like it has a small phallus. It might even shrink yours. Buyer beware.

He does make an interesting point about the sports car. If chicks dig it AND it's inexpensive AND insurance isn't asinine on it AND it actually drives like a sports car and doesn't just look like one..probably isn't a horrible idea. If any of those things don't apply...don't do it.

Sounds like a Celica or Eclipse or Mustangs for a while there. Any time I saw a guy with an Eclipse it made me laugh.

I can never focus on a post's content after certain grammatical or spelling errors. It's perhaps my biggest weakness... But really, it was probably a good post. I will take your word for it.
