Help Me Buy a Car.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I can never focus on a post's content after certain grammatical or spelling errors. It's perhaps my biggest weakness... But really, it was probably a good post. I will take your word for it.

Ha. I'm not necessarily defending the quality of the post, just the idea itself of buying an inexpensive sports car when you're young and single. If you're ever going to do it, it's either then before a woman pressures you to get rid of it, if you get rich young or during a mid-life crisis.

The good thing for Doc is that with his looks and personality, he'll be single for a long time and able to enjoy that car for a while.

I can't justify it to myself until I make Fuck You Money, and I consider that grossing above $500K/yr. Until then, there's too many better things to invest in rather than plowing it into a sports car. Don't get me wrong - when the FYM comes my way, I will get some toys. I just want to retire at 35, so I better be frugal until then:chuckles:

Believe me, I'm with you. My point isn't that he should be spending $50k on a car, but just that he has to have a car...so if it costs the same as a mom car, there's nothing wrong with getting something hot.

Thoughts on this guy here? Seems like a solid deal to me. Nothing too fancy here.

Also I found a pretty good deal on a used Acura TL with less than 50,000 miles. It cost around 14k.

Stay away from Saabs. Not that reliable and they are out of business, so good luck trying to get it fixed when it does break down.

Have you decided against buying new?

Pretty much, just doesn't seem worth it right now. I will probably buy a new one when I move on from whatever I end up with this time. Right now I just need something to get me to work. I also have more options when buying used. If I were to buy new I'd likely just end up with a Ford Focus since they're cheap. I'm leaning toward the TL I saw, less than 50,000 miles and the payment is around 320 a month, which it just about perfect.

If you want something more luxurious than your standard car, look at a used Hyundai Genesis. They have to have some of the worst initial resale values ever. The reason I say initial is that it looks like after the initial huge hit (like 40% of the car's value), it seems as though they hit somewhat of a floor, which is typical for any luxury/near luxury car.

TL's are pretty nice, they just seem kind of boring to me. Basically a fancy Honda Accord. It also seems like overkill for something to just get you to and from work unless you plan on keeping it for a while. I would pick the Genesis over the TL if you can afford it. Have you looked at Infiniti G35/G37s?

If it's 2010 or later get the TL. You'll love that shit.

I looked for a Genesis and the ones I found were all a good 6k more than the TL, doesn't really seem worth it to me. I'll look into those Infinities.

It's a 2006. I know that's pretty old, but less than 50k miles and it looks to be in good condition. Is there something wrong with TLs before 2010 or is that just the only one you have experience with? I looked at reviews and they've been very positive.

What I'll probably do if I get it is finance it for 4 years, meanwhile I'll save up for my next car. I'll trade it in for whatever I can get after that (likely not much) and get a new car when I'm more financially stable. I actually just read an article saying the best thing recent college grads can do is buy used luxury cars as they are usually reliable and will live a long time.

Here's a listing I found for an Infiniti G35: Link. Looks pretty solid, it's a private seller so I may be able to negotiate the price down further if he needs the money. I could probably get away with financing this one for only 3 years. I'm not sure how to go about getting a loan for a car from a private seller, but that's something I can look into.

I'm not so sure I would trust the article you read. Luxury cars are more prone to have things break because they have more features on them than your standard car.

Is the TL you are looking at certified? I am guessing it is too old to be certified.

Here's a list of certified cars for sale under $15k with under 30k miles: http://www.cars.com/for-sale/search...Id=28645&searchSource=GN_REFINEMENT&pgId=2102

My personal picks would be the Mazda3 for $12,484, the Civic for $12995, or the Civic coupe on the second page that is an EX (meaning it is fully loaded except leather and NAV) for $13,999.

On any used car you should be able to get at least 10% of the price off, IMO. I used to work at a car dealership and they would make them up several thousand dollars. I remember we had a GTO that we got for $18365 that was priced at $23995.

Yeah it is. I'm leaning towards going after the TL. I might contact the owner of the Infiniti I found because it's cheaper. I know it's riskier to buy from a private owner, but it could save me quite a bit of cash. Who knows, he might really want to move it and may be willing to lower his price even more.

I'm not sure how to go about getting a loan to buy from a private owner though. Much easier to work with a dealer.

14k for a used car? You can buy a new one at 15 k at this time of year.

Yeah but the choices are extremely limited. I'd like to get a car I'm going to enjoy, not something just because it's super cheap.

I'm the kind of guy who goes on drives to clear my head. If there was anything in my life I would like to splurge on it would be a car.

The problem with the certification on the TL is that it only lasts until it is 7 years old, which can't be more than a year worth of warranty left unless it was a "leftover" and bought after sitting a while when it was new.

Why not get something a bit more expensive and newer for a little more money? The Genesis for around $20k that is a year old would have a bumper to bumper warranty until it is 5 years/60k miles old, and a powertrain warranty for 10 years / 100k.

Take out a 5 year loan instead of 4 year loan. The car is under warranty for most of the loan (powertrain is under warranty for all of it), and the car is going to be worth more when it is 6 or 7 years old than a 2006 is going to be when it's 10-11 years old, so even if you don't pay it off before you trade it in, you won't be upside down.

If you buy this and talk them down to $18.5k with a 5 year loan, you pay roughly the same per month as the TL with a 4 year loan. The 5 year/60k bumper to bumper would expire soon, but you would have another 50k/8ish years on the powertrain warranty. I would be surprised if you trade in the car in 2017 if the 2011 model year car isn't worth quite a bit more than the 2006 model year car as well.
