Holgrem Presser

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Oh my god Grossi is the HERO of this press conference.

Tony Grossi is a tool. The Cleveland media needs to calm the F down. It's year two of this thing and we are headed in the right direction. But them single handily running people out of town is not helping us at all. In the long run, wins now mean nothing and only hurt us.

Remember that win against the Panthers last year? Yeah neither do I. Well that win cost us AJ Green. Just let this team finish out the year. H&H have us on the right track.

With all due respect, Holmgren was the first to attack the media today. You cannot do that and not expect the media to go for the blood in the water. Really unprofessional.

when they are as bad as they currently are they deserve to get called out. i can't think of any other city where the press is as negative and bad as they are in cleveland....it's terrible

Everything is negative and bad in Cleveland. When the teams are terrible and the economy is non-existent...what do you expect.

What did Holmgren point to as reasons things are different than they have been?

The defense has drastically improved - well in his terms he said they have been "okay" which is an upgrade over "fucking terribad" I must say. But he said about 18 times that he will save stuff like that for the end of the year.

Here is the best I could do with a sick 3 year old hangin on me... I'll try to fix up the formatting a bit in a little while.

Wants to set the record straight. Pat will speak after practice.
Met with NFL and Players union about Colt incident.
Waited to speak to press to finalize those meetings.
Scheduling pressers is up to Holmgren and not the press (Oh, Snap!)
Responses to questions…
Colt not tested for concussion during game.
Timeline of concussion…
Trainers did not see play. Heard crowd response and were told McCoy was down. Trainers went onto field to check both Colt and Alex Smith. Got to Colt and he was “lucid and talking”. Colt’s injury complaint was his hand. Trainers told him to get up and come to the bench. Got no indication from Colt that his head was a concern. Discussed with NFL and player reps ways to improve procedures. Trainer tells Shurmur that Colt is good to go. Stresses that no coach will ever overrule the decision of the trainer. After the game, Colt got his hand x-rayed showered and dressed. Told Joe Thomas that he felt off. Joe sent him to the trainer immediately. Ran concussion test and he passed all points. Started showing more signs during press conference and flight home.

Asked about intuitive aspect as opposed to running concussion test?
States he isn’t going to second guess Pat on that point. Says, when he was coaching, he talked to his players and if they said they were good they went back in the game.

Shouldn’t somebody on the sidelines who saw the play have said to check Colt out?
It’s possible that nobody really saw the hit from the sideline. Earlier in the season, players have alerted trainers to take a look at somebody. Did not happen for Colt. Has to assume nobody saw the hit to say anything. Process improvements being discussed.

Roughing the passer penalty wouldn’t alert anybody to look at Colt. Penalty called often without major hit. Stresses the need to trust the medical personnel. Effects didn’t show up until later in the locker room.

Asked if Shurmur was instructed to not answer whether Colt was administered test. Said Pat likely just needed to get all the info and confirm facts prior to commenting.

Working with union to improve procedures.

Speculation is that if the trainers had information (had seen the hit) nothing would have necessarily been different. Colt simply wasn’t displaying signs.

Holmgren not expecting any type of punishment from league. Meetings focused mostly on ways to improve the process and avoid future failures of the system.

Asked about comments from Colt’s dad not matching up with Holmgren’s understanding of situation? Said he hasn’t talked to Colt. Memory loss could be a delayed effect.

Does helmet to helmet hit automatically trigger concussion test? No. The trainers talk to the player and determine whether it’s required.

Asked why he hasn’t spoken to McCoy.

Asked about suspension of Harrison (fair or not). Says he has to leave those things up the league. League is trying to make things safer.

Nobody made a statement that Colt shouldn’t fly.

Is Pat going to be head coach next year? YES.

Asked about wisdom of taking Wallace out of game. States he won’t second guess Pat. It’s a fair question that should be asked of Pat.

Off the field issues business as usual for Browns?
The nature of the question, you are implying something. DON’T DO THAT. (Getting very short with reporters.)

Why isn’t Holmgren more involved publicly? Spends the bulk of his effort behind the scenes. His role is to hire good people, let them work and support them the best he can. Have a competent head coach who will be here a long time. Have a good GM who has done well in drafts and will continue. Not scoring enough points but that will be fixed. When he feels the need to be in front of the press, he will be. Press continuing to print that it is business as usual. The fact is that it is not. Things are changing whether the press wants to acknowledge it or not.

(Phone rang and I missed a couple points here.)

Should the players have retaliated against Harrison? (Long pause and lots of thinking) Says that is the wrong way to go. As hard as it is, you walk away. The penalty put us into the red zone and gave us a chance to score. Retaliate and the penalty will put you back out of that opportunity. Remember the hit though and use that in the framework of the game and within the rules.

Disussing failure of “observer” to call down to look at Colt. Holmgren thinks that his role was to look for players who aren’t receiving treatment. Colt did receive treatment but signs not apparent.

Holmgren has spoken to Brad McCoy and not Colt.

Has team met expectations? Certainly had hoped for a better record. Details about team and players will wait for a discussion after the season. Asked about dropped passes, he says everybody is paid to do something and that’s what they need to do.

Asked if West Coast Offense has had the benefit to the receivers that he expected. Says all of those kind of questions are to wait for the end of the season.

Was Harrison caught in between tackling and pulling up? Refers to Tomlin’s statement as being the best assessment… “It was a penalty.”

Asked again about Colt. Says he had Steve Young in college. He played a whole game and didn’t remember the entire game. Things are improving to protect health of players. Our medical staff did what they were supposed to do. Can the system be improved? Yes.

Would like to win a couple more games to close out the season. Spoke of a season with Seattle when they were 4-9 and won 3 final rough games as a nice springboard to the future.

Air is cleared with Brad McCoy.

Why did things get blown out of proportion? What does Homgren want to see from press when responding to national reports? Says reporters do a heck of a job. It would have been premature to speak to press prior to today because he didn’t have all details. Tweeters and bloggers have changed the media and things are out and blown up prior to ability to comment on issues. Asks reporters to believe what he tells them and trust him that he will get the appropriate info to them at the appropriate time.

I don't believe for a second that none of the coaches, trainers, etc nobody, saw the hit on McCoy.

Something still stinks about this.

So did he guarantee playoffs next year? If not, I'm out...

My thinking is that people saw the hit. When the trainers were checking out Colt's hand, everybody that would have said something assumed that the trainers were completely checking him out. It's likely a case of everybody assuming things were getting done and nobody confirming that they were.

This season could not have gone any worse. Sure, Taylor and Sheard have played real well. But I can't take anything else positive out of here. We aren't re upping our season tickets next year.

You better not come crawling to Holmgren for playoff tickets.

Little looks good. Jordan Norwood is performing better than anyone could have expected.

And the defense as a unit has been better than expected, which is slightly above average.

Other than that, this year hasn't really done any good for anyone other than the rookies and second year guys who appear to be improving for the most part. But the defense improving is a really big deal.

Every analyst I've ever heard that has talked about our D-Line has said that Taylor, Sheard, and Rubin are all going to be studs in the coming years. And if you look at our O-Line (with Steinbach back) we are a RT away from having a top 5 group. And that's how you win in the league, building from the lines out. Hekertt has really done a great job thus far. We will be adding 3 top 40 players in the next draft. If we just give it some time, we will see this team really make significant strides.

But until we get a franchise QB, we will be mediocre or worse.
