Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So we've seen great early production out of JR [holds breath] that we can only hope is sustained. I'm still sticking with the theory that he's the kind of player than can only thrive in winning situations and beside great teammates.

The Moz is looking solid, while playing apparently limited minutes. He's filling a void that we've had all season.

Now Shump should be just over a week away if I'm not mistaken? This means JR goes to solidify the bench to provide a much needed scoring punch while Shump shuts down opposing guards and provides another solid scoring option.

But what are we really getting in Shump? And how will his inclusion change the outlook of our team, its chemistry and its rotation?

Was watching this video online for insight:

What I find most notable is Shump's athleticism, and the fact that we have none. Automatically, our athleticism near doubles with Iman on the floor. That's a big positive for me. He also balances out the perimeter shooters VS drivers problem we seem to have on offense which makes us guardable as he's a willing and capable driver.

Those with a more insightful basketball mind: I'd be keen to hear how else Shump might impact this team and how his inclusion might change our landscape? Also, which current Cav does Shump's inclusion benefit most in terms of compatibility etc?

I think you are crazy! We definitely have some spots where we lack athletic ability (our old bench) but Kyrie, JR, Lebron, TT, Moz are all pretty fast and athletic for their position, and adding Shump will make us even more athletic. Most pundits think the Cavs should be playing at a break-neck tempo

Since shump is close to being back. I went back and watched his last game as a knick. He played as advertised. a smart athletic defender who is streaky offensively. About 1 minute in he threw an post entry pass... Doesn't sound special. But right now the only people that can/do pass to Love in the post is Smith and Miller. It will be nice to have a third person doing it. I think having shump back and eventually moving Smith to the bench will be huge.

Although I've been a Dion fan, It's nice to now have two new 6 foot 5+ guards. Pairing Dion with Kyrie gave us one of the shorter backcourts. That alone--aside from the defensive skill and effort--will help us guard the other team's 2.

I think the last trade(s) improved each position by at least 5%, maybe more like 10%+. We didn't need stars: we needed solid role players, and I think we got a bit more than that. These players fit on paper more than what we gave up.

Starting Shumpert alone gets more touches for Love and takes pressure off Kyrie to jack up shots or play hero ball since he's not competing with Dion to get shots.

Shumpert also allows Marion to do what he was supposed to do: back up LeBron, thereby reducing LeBron's minutes. Shumpert also allows LeBron to not have to take the other team's best player for extended minutes. Just not having Marion or Miller starting improves the starting 5 by at least 5%+

I recall him being drafted as a point guard. I can see him being used a lot against teams like Washington and OKC when we need to cover more athletic point guards while also having a reliable ball handler.

From Vardon:

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- The Cavaliers believe new guard Iman Shumpert could see his first court action by the end of this upcoming four-game homestand, team officials said.

Shumpert, who came the Cavs along with J.R. Smith in a trade with the New York Knicks on Jan. 5, hasn't played in a game since suffering a dislocated shoulder on Dec. 12 against Boston.

Shumpert has engaged in individual, on-court work since joining Cleveland, but participated in contact drills Sunday at practice in two-on-two and three-on-three settings. He'll practice with the team Tuesday, and for now, his target to return is either Friday against Charlotte or Sunday against Oklahoma City.

Shumpert participated in shootaround this morning for tonight's game against the Chicago Bulls with Cleveland's second unit, but won't play. When he does come back, he's expected to start at shooting guard.

PG Irving
SG Shump- good on-ball defense, how quickly will he learn def. system?
SF Lebron
PF Love- more easily hidden on defense now w/ Shump/Mozzy
C Mozgov- takes up a lot of space and attention

Bench
Tristan- energy big- becomes more effective w/ our new behemoth in the middle
Marion- big tweener, good system & 1-on-1 defender, reduce LBJ's minutes
JR- primary bench scorer
Delly- bulldog defensive G- good pairing w/ JR

Shat's about to get real, fellas...adding Shump will be a double whammy, as it should keep Miller's knees on the the bench *and* get JR Smith into his natural bench scorer role- plus our overall team defensive reaction time is about to increase, more than just a little- it's about to become an advantage... :hsughr::hsughr::hsughr:

I don't think it will take too long to learn our defensive system considering there isn't one. It seems our defensive frame-work, when winning games, is too forget what defense is for 3 quarters and then play with effort in the 4th. Shouldn't be too much of a learning curve.

quoted from Lloyd's final thoughts

19. The good news keeps coming. Iman Shumpert will likely return to the court Friday, although Blatt didn’t rule out using him Wednesday against the Jazz. That seems a little aggressive, but if he goes through a full practice Tuesday it’s possible he plays a few minutes off the bench.

20. The Cavs are eager to plug Shumpert into the starting lineup, which will slide J.R. Smith into his bench role and finally give the Cavs a starting five they can carry into April and beyond (provided everyone stays healthy).

21. Shumpert was in a good mood tonight and is clearly anxious to return. He has dealt with a variety of injuries throughout his career, but this is the longest he has sat besides his torn ACL at the end of his rookie season.

22. When the Cavs acquired Shumpert, LeBron compared him to the Bulls’ Jimmy Butler. While Butler is clearly the better player, Shumpert likes the comparison. Butler and Shumpert are close off the court because they share the same agent (Happy Walters) and they work out together often during summers.

23. A number of people around the league thought Shumpert had more trade value and were surprised the Knicks simply gave him away as the sweetener for the Cavs taking Smith’s contract off their hands. Thibodeau seemed equally surprised Monday.

24. “I’ve always had a lot of respect for what Shumpert brings, a lot of intensity,” Thibodeau said. “He can guard multiple positions. He’s comfortable offensively making plays. He can handle the ball. He can do a little bit of everything. I thought that was really a good pickup by them.”

I could see the logic in having Shump be a bench player until the ASB. Chemistry seems to be good right now, and I don't know how many minutes they want Shump to play.

Don't get me wrong, he will be the starter at some point. But the 8 day break might be the best time to plug him in.

Smith is really lighting it up and playing pretty damn well. Right now it may not be necessary for Shump to start.

We keep talking about how we need another PG to run our offense better. Delly provides a nice spark at times but it is apparent that he should not be the first PG off the bench. How likely is it that Shump will eat some of Delly's minutes up? With the depth we have at SG, it wouldn't be hard find Shump minutes with the 2nd unit.

He has been used as a PG throughout his NBA career, granted in small amounts. Curious as to how his ball-handling/vision/b-ball IQ rates? The great thing about Delly is he is a smart player. He runs the 2nd unit admirably, considering his physical shortcomings. Can Shump run our second unit as effectively?
