Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shump is fine defensively when his matchup doesn't have the quickness advantage (i.e. don't put him on PGs or adept foul magicians like Harden or Lou Will)

Sight for sore eyes in that 3rd quarter, really was a glimpse of the type of defense this team can be capable of

Shump is extremely up and down and inconsistent. What he is not is over paid in 2017 NBA terms. I know what his limits and issues are but it's a pet peeve of mine when I see people taking about his "horrible contract"

He had that mean-mug look in his eyes as he walked on the floor to start the second half and you just knew he meant business.

He made a couple of plays early on and kept that poker face in check before unleashing a whirlwind of gusto with that superb defensive effort on George in the 3rd.

Shump's entire performance tells you all you need to know about this team: they're uber complacent, except for when it matters. They're all mind over matter and if they get their heads in the right space, they can take us to places we always dream to go.

Shump's effort and intensity is what has been down for a year and a half now which is why people talk about his contract being horrible.

Everyone knew he could not really shoot and his ball handling was suspect when he signed his deal, but he was athletic and played like a man possessed on the defensive side of the ball.

It was good to see him step up last night and play like the Shump of old last night.

He's not overpaid if he plays like he did last night. Far too often this year, he did not.

It's clear that LeBron and Kyrie still don't trust Shumpert offensively and the Pacers definitely didn't have any respect for him beating them down the stretch.

Shump was fantastic in the third, full credit where credit is due, his defensive effort spun the game.

But the biggest reason why the Pacers were able to make their comeback is the due to the fact the basically stopped guarding Shumpert in the 4th. Combine that with the fact that few teams truly guard Thompson at all down the stretch and the Cavs were pretty much playing 5 on 3 basketball offensively.

It's a legitimate conundrum for the Cavs personnel wise down the stretch. The offense, LeBron in particular, is MUCH better statistically when Frye is out there over Thompson because of the spacing, but Frye is terrible at providing rim resistance and doesn't have the offensive rebounding element.

Shumpert is pretty much the same thing, even an A+ defensive effort will eventually get cancelled out if he Pacers simply stop guarding him to funnel defenders towards everyone else. Especially if LeBron and Irving are going to remain hesitant to pass to him.

I get the criticism of RS Shump. But as long as we get the locked-in playoff version of Shump who cares about the RS erratic performances, he's worth every penny of his contract.

The only thing that really bothers me about Shumpert is his "fashion sense". Who dresses that guy?

Not sure what the counter lineup is in this situation. Any lineup with both TT and Shump will be better defensively then anything else we try to trout out there but you hit it on the head regarding it's ineptitude offensively. It leads to the dreaded Irving - LBJ iso ball.

Maybe a lineup with Love and LBJ in the front court that also incorporates Korver at the 3, along with Shump and Irving would provide better offensive output but you're still going to give up points somewhere. Deron Williams has stepped up his defense as of late so you could also swap him out for Irving situationally, which would still give you the spacing needed offensively, while cutting down on the ISO ball.

I think the counter is taking out either Love or TT and replacing that person with Korver. TT's free throws are a major concern down the stretch of games, so he's probably the one to come out.

No Love for Shump? Thought he did a great job guarding PG. Got a key steal too.

Much love for Shumpert. His D tonight and the last game too looked like when he was looking like an all-nba defender in the 14-15 playoff run.

He's contesting shots well, he's draped all over his man, he's navigating screens all over the court, double screens, back-screens, moving screens etc.

When George is going at him, he's holding his ground, he is in a proper defensive stance, he is not allowing dribble penetration and he is getting his hand directly into the headspace of George on shots.

And it seems as if he has rediscovered that he has super quick hands and has been poking the ball away, swiping at the ball and stealing it, knocking it off their guys out of bounds, disrupting entire possessions if he doesn't get the turnover, forcing shot clock violations....refusing to get picked, especially when weaker defenders are put in a PnR with him, he is refusing to allow a switch/mismatch to occur.

If he can play this kind of D, with this kind of effort, and remain fundamentally sound, Shumpert is an elite defender who will be absolutely vital for us going forward regardless of if his shot is going in or not. He's also not forcing any offense or turning it over. He's setting great screens too, making very solid contact.

Shumpert has been inconsistent his entire career, and especially this year. The one thing that gives me hope, is that has been mostly inconsistent offense and shooting. Defensively, he was pretty average all year except when the effort was bad, and then he was terrible.

If he can maintain this play we will have a much better chance at winning it all this year.

Interesting question for me is this....if Shump does keep it up and is elite the entire playoff run...question is...do you trade him in the off-season?

I know everyone is going to say yes, and I am leaning that way too. But I'd need a consistently great defender(Thabo...Tony Allen....not necessarily either one of them but somebody of that stature)

Stump quietly played some really good ball defense against the Pacers. His help defense wasn't as good, but on the ball and contest defense was excellent, some of the best in the playoffs for any player.

Overall: 25 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 45.9%, -20.9%
Threes: 22.2 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 39.7%, -17.5%
Twos: 28.6 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 49.7%, -21.1%
>15ft: 21.4?DFG%, opponents usually shoot 43.1%, -21.7%

shump should basically have 3 moves offensively

shoot corner 3 if open in half court
one dribble pull up if under 5 secs on the clock
straight line drive to the basket is closed on.

everything else should be forbidden
