Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yes. I've gone into it in several threads.

We should be looking to consolidate and upgrade our front-court. I think that means trading Tristan Thompson; who is a great player, but at potentially $13M+, that's a waste. We should also try to package Varejao in a deal to a team that can absorb his salary.

My point is that we should be looking to consolidate these players to add talent in our front court OR shore up our reserves.
So you want to trade our depth, in hopes of adding more depth?

I'm confused, I'll be honest.

To each his own, but I'm fairly certain all these guys will be on the team the next couple years, at least.

I mean, anytime you can upgrade your team without sacrificing depth, then you do it. But I just don't see us trading one or two of those players and getting better value in return.

I'm saying we have a great deal of specialists and role players on our team, and many of whom are either injury prone, overpaid, looking to be overpaid, or looking to get paid soon.

Mozgov will get paid market value; Thompson will get overpaid; AV is overpaid; Love is a max player. Two of those four players are out with injury. That's our front-court, we're saving money nowhere.

We should look to trade Thompson and AV, for someone that will make less than the $23M that they'll likely cost. Mozgov is a player I'd prefer to keep, but if we can potentially upgrade at C, then I'd be open to pairing him to make a trade work.

Thompson and Shumpert are assets, and guys I see (and others see) as on the rise; however, I don't think Thompson's next contract will be a worthwhile deal for the Cavs.

Hence, why I'd want to test the waters to see what a combination of these players could net us.

Smith will opt-in for $6M, but could be valuable to some teams, who knows, but I think he's the least likely player to be traded.

To each his own, but I'm fairly certain all these guys will be on the team the next couple years, at least.

I doubt that.. I think we'll make moves towards consolidating the amount of cap we have dedicated to our front-court, at a minimum.

Hard to put a price on continuity, and glue guys. Then again, guys like Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, and Jamario Moon were glue guys, who weren't were keeping around... I think DeLonte West was probably an ANTI-glue-guy...

Why are we so concerned with Dan's wallet? The three max contracts alone put us over the cap. The hard cap allows us to retain our own players, no matter the cost. Why do you care if guys are overpaid or not?

I don't know how the next CBA will turn out, so I won't bother trying to project that. But based on this current CBA, we can keep all these guys regardless of their contract, as long as Dan is willing to pay.

If you want to trade the players to improve the team, then fine. I don't see that working out, but okay. But why do you want to trade to shred salary that, ultimately, would do nothing but hurt the team. We are never going to be below the current cap (not even close) as long as we have three max contracts.

I never said anything about Dan, I said the cap.

AFAIK, no they don't, at least, not next year.

Because it's not an optimal use of a limited resource (i.e., the cap)? Because we might be able to improve by making moves, and there is no harm in trying to do so?

Right, but we're also devoting an inordinate amount of cap space relative to other playoff teams to a front-court of (arguably) injury prone players, role players, and specialists. I'd prefer to have some greater degree of versatility in our lineup.

If you want to trade the players to improve the team, then fine.

Why else would I want to trade players?

I don't see that working out, but okay. But why do you want to trade to shred salary that, ultimately, would do nothing but hurt the team.

I wouldn't, nor have I advocated this.

We are never going to be below the current cap (not even close) as long as we have three max contracts.

I never advocated going below the cap either.

These two last points really don't have anything to do with my argument, just fyi.

Okay, I got it now. I was just trying to understand your argument.

I mean, if this was NBA2K, I'd be trading these guys too...but...well, I think you get the point.

Assuming we keep Love, how in the hell could we possibly upgrade from Love, Moz, TT, AV???

I want to hear actual player names that are possible to acquire, to replace/consolidate as you suggest.

The cap is going to be sky high in 2 years. Lock up Shumpert and TT this offseason and those contracts will become relative bargains. If we want to build depth we can always take a bad contract off a bad team with Haywood's contract.

Gouri, remember when we all agreed it wasn't the time to talk about Andrew Wiggins the day after Love went down? The day after a great playoff win isn't the time to talk about trading Shump/TT/JR.

We can get into exactly why and who you'd target to replace them after the playoffs, but until then let's focus on the team we have now.

Why is Love listed twice?

Varejao is not good, bro, he's getting $9.7M over the next two years.

Tristan Thompson will want $13M/yr+; he's not worth that and numerous posters have demonstrated this by looking at other players salaries around the league.

Mozgov is likely to be retained at decent value, but the great deal he's on now will end.

Shump is an RFA.

At what point are we saving money on any of these 5 players?

I want to hear actual player names that are possible to acquire, to replace/consolidate as you suggest.

Tiago Splitter would be a name I'd target for our front-court, and he's been mentioned numerous times and is also mentioned in the media. I've also argued that we should think about going for a big-time player with the Haywood contract. My argument is not about going below the cap, or saving Dan money, but about doing one of two things - adding another player who can create for himself (if we continue to play iso-ball), or shoring up our reserves.

My point is that we shouldn't say these guys are off the trade block, and we should definitely explore the potential for trades.

Anyone thinking I'm advocating they should be traded simply for the sake of trading them is getting lost in the nuance of the argument.

I totally agree, and wasn't really trying to open up this conversation. I don't even think it can be had until the playoffs are over as teams like the Spurs (in the past tense), Clippers, and Hawks just to name a few, may be looking to make some major moves depending upon the outcome of the playoffs.
