Indians Need a Power Hitter for 2016

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So we have to wait then on Bradley, Frazier, Zimmer and our other prospects to come up through the farm system to somehow fill in the power hitter void?

Won't that be too late to hang onto our current core hitters and pitchers, or force us to pay up at the end of their current contracts?

More suffering, pain, despair for me for another 50+ years:banghead:

Oh well, at least we'll have a Cavs Championship to look forward too....and starting tonight!

Francona and Calloway have shown the ability to develop great starting pitching that actually peaks and gets more consistent as the season goes on. Some of those guys can be kept here another 4-5 years. Their is an excellent group of younger starting pitchers at varying levels of the minors as well. While are prime legit WS contender years might be 2-3 years off, we should be able to be competing for the playoffs every year going forward for a long time.

Mo's larger point though was excellent. People point at Pittsburgh, KC as an example of what small market teams should be able to do and ignore the fact that both those teams were not only far worse than us over the past 20 years, but that their current braintrusts suffered through 5-7 years of TERRIBLE teams to get to the point where they are now. So how can we as a fanbase on one hand point to them as example of what the Indians should be able to acheive and then on the other knock, criticize, and even call for the dismissal of our current braintrust?(who if anything, have shown that they've figured out this draft thing and minor league development thing finally over the last 3-4 years)

Where is the answer in free agency?

I'll be interested to see what the Indians do this off-season. I'm in the camp that would move a starter for a bat.

I think it really doesn't matter which goes (Salazar/Carrasco). Both guys are locked up long term, through a contract (Carrasco) or through team control via arbitration (Salazar).

I'd prefer to move Salazar if choosing but wouldn't squash a trade if Carrasco was preferred. Indians have been great at developing pitchers, so I think this is the year to let one go.

One thing I will say though is, I think people are underestimating what Cleveland could get back in a trade for one of these guys. Good, young starters on cheap contracts typically can get you just about any player you want. Cleveland has the best two options on the market for anyone who is not a flat out rental, so it introduces smaller market teams as well (as trade partners) because of the affordability of both. That should drive the price up as talks start.

As for who's been discussed, Puig terrifies me. His talent is undeniable but man does it sound like he is toxic (and in a clubhouse that is far more liberal than the Indians). The Tribe seems to have a lot of really head down, blue collar guys. Even Lindor, who is immensely talented is described as such. Ditto for Brantley. Puig's personality seems like it would overwhelm.

Goldy is a pipe dream IMO but if Arizona was considering moving him, I'd trade Carrasco AND a prospect in a heartbeat. Honestly would be asking their GM if he wanted to sleep with my wife too.

I'd give them Carrasco, Frazier, and Gilberts left nut Dan.

With Lance Lynn going down for Tommy John surgery, the Cardinals are going to need a starter for next year. Carrasco or Salazar for Randal Grichik might be something to consider.

He's young, good defensively, and has the power we need in the outfield.

No way is Grichik worth that much...he's probably not even worth Cody Anderson.

I hate position players developed by the Cards...they seem to fall off once they leave that organization.

Hard pass.

I don't know about that. His stats look very good for playing in just two partial seasons. Better yet, he has a pure swing, smooth and quick. I think he matures into a 30 HR / 100 RBI player over the next 3-4 years.

And with our deep pitching staff and ability to develop pitchers, I'd make the Anderson trade in a heartbeat, but I think the Cardinals would demand more.

Yeah, I can't count on every member of this boards fingers the amount of players who "are going to mature into so and so" all across sports and end up doing jack shit. Color me not ready to sell a top end starter or a top end prospect for this guy.

And young starting pitching will always be worth more than hitting...always.

Absolutely hate position players brought through the Cards organization...

Shit, if we're counting partial seasons...Lonnie Chisenhall might be the next MVP.

I do contemplate Anderson, but Grichuk is not long for center field which makes him considerably less valuable to this team as constructed.

2015 Season:
323 AB, 17 HR, 23 2B, 7 3B, 47 RBI, 3.2 WAR
.276/.339/.548/.877

Yes, somewhat small sample size last year, but statistically better power wise on a full season basis than anyone we have now in the lineup. And not too shabby for a "rookie" either.

He's currently a left fielder and has played some CF. Brantley will be out for at least 6 months according to reports so we're looking at a June return, if all goes well. Grichuk could then rotate between DH, CF, and RF.

He's not eligible for arbitration until 2018 and not a FA until 2021 so we'd have him for a good long while. His current salary is $510K.

And a very natural swing:
