Indians Trade Deadline Analysis

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's funny how White and Pomeranz went from great prospects with ace potential in the minds of most Indians fans to two guys with very low ceilings that could very likely be Jeremy Sowers and Adam Miller all over again.

I know we traded them, but how the hell does that change so many people's opinions on them?

The only one who ever had ace potential in our minds was Pomeranz, even then most other organizations see him projecting as a number 2. The Adam Miller comparisons make sense because of White's similar injury. As do the Sowers comparisons because he was highly touted as a prospect but never panned out. Nobody is saying that this is how these guys will turn out, but it very well could happen. TONS of pitching prospects bust out, even the highly rated ones.

Gunther- they wanted white in bullpen (they said) because if he had to regain arm strength to start he wouldnt be able to pitch in majors till end of year.

I remember reading something to that effect. I still don't get it. What good would it do to risk disrupting one of the best bullpens in baseball just to keep White playing in the bigs? I mean, if his injury required that he wait until the end of the season to pitch as a starter, then you wait till the end of the season and pitch in winter ball. It's not like we need the bullpen help. And there's always the minors if needed. Oh well, it's old news now.

He would've been good long man, Durbin and Herrmann never did it for me.

That ball ricocheted like a homer. Let's take another look!

For everyone who's salty the Tribe didn't trade for Ludwick, who was pretty much the only real option for a right handed bat went at the deadline, he's been 0/8, 2 BB, 4 K's so far with Pittsburgh. Obviously it's only been 3 games, but so far his contributions for the Pirates have included that awful stat line and 3 losses to the Cubs of all teams. Hope nobody lost sleep over this guy.

Deal 3: Ubaldo Jimenez for The Farm.

I was walking to the movie theater when I got news this deal was just about complete. I was checking my phone all through Captain America (good flick by the way). I couldn't wrap my head around it at the time. In the hours since this all went down, I have read a ton of analysis. I have talked friends off the ledge. Maybe I'm a glass half full kinda guy. But I like the deal. Don't get me wrong, I love White and Pomeranz. But the more I read about Jimenez, the more I like it. He is under control for at least two more years (if this option clause in his contract is transferable, three more). Let me lay some numbers on you: In Jimenez's 10 starts since July 1, he has 63 strikeouts in 66 innings, and a 2.58 ERA. In his last 77 innings he has 77 strike outs and 11 walks. I am in the believing-he-just-needed-some-time-to-get-healthy corner.
Nice Career. Not.
White and Pomeranz project as legitimate Major League number two starters, which is no small feat. They will be good. It will be tough to stomach. Was I secretly hoping Ubaldo would fail his physical? Maybe. But the fact of the matter is we are hoping these two guys come into what Ubaldo is doing. Pitching is such a tough thing to project. Anyone who has ever owned a Brien Taylor rookie card knows what I'm talking about.
And the underlying theme that no one seems to be talking about just yet is the fact that this deal signifies a window of contention for the Tribe. We've all heard that this ownership will spend money when the time is right. After the playoffs in 07, we heard it, and we did add salary. Albeit in the wrong places, we tried. With Jimenez's contract being so club friendly, I think we will be in a position to add the bat we sorely need this offseason. The package we gave up for Jimenez probably could have brought us Hunter Pence. But we would still need pitching. And we wouldn't have enough money to make that happen after his arbitration. Other than that, what bat was available?
Verdict: After much debate, I'm buyin this one.

Lets hope your baseball knowledge and critiques are better than your cinematic knowledge and critiques. :chuckles:

What have Fukudome's been?

What have Fukudome's been?[/QUOTE]

Pretty weak... 3/22 with 2 RBIs and a walk. If the Indians gave up what they did for Ludwick instead of Fukudome then that would have made more sense considering the need for a right handed bat. They made the trade days before the deadline though, so by the time that trade and the Ubaldo trade was done who was really left prospect wise to give up? They say the Padres were asking for too much, and if that's the case then yeah, Ludwick isnt worth it. I'm in no way a big Fukudome fan either btw.. might as well have just keep Travis Buck up here if Fuku was the master plan to upgrade the offense. Just saying it's not like we missed out on a player who's the difference between making the playoffs and not in Ludwick. I personally wanted Willingham more than anyone. Choo better be ready to go by the time he gets off the DL... our hopes hinge on it!
