Jared Cunningham

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Soooo... who’s this guy?
Not like it matters anyway because I only put the odds at 20% of making the final roster.

Cavs seem intent on opening the season with 14 players because of the noted tax implications, and also to leave a roster spot open for the ghost of Ray Allen.

(Just Kidding.)

Jared Cunningham To Sign With Cavaliers
August 16th at 3:14pm CST by Arthur Hill
The Cavaliers have reached a deal with free agent Jared Cunningham, tweets Shams Charania of RealGM. The 6’4″ guard recently committed to join the team in camp, according to Charania. Cunningham would appear to stand a decent chance to remain on the roster come opening night, as the Cavs have deals with only 11 other players so far.

Cunningham appeared in 19 games with the Clippers last season, averaging 1.8 points and 0.5 assists in 4.7 minutes. He was traded to the Sixers on January 7th, but was waived the same day. Cunningham has also been with the Mavericks, Hawks and Kings in his three-year NBA career.

Cunningham was drafted by Cleveland with the 24th pick in 2012, but was shipped to Dallas in a draft-day deal. He was part of the Utah Jazz team during this year’s summer league.

If by "decent" chance of making the final roster, Hoopsrumors means 2%, I might agree with that.

Obviously, the team needs to sign a few guys to fill out their training camp roster, and I think we can expect one or two more, in addition to Tristan and JR and another big man. Last year they had 18 players.

Cunningham makes some sense, I guess, in that I am sure they don't want to babysit a rookie camp invite.

Pointer is also unsigned. Last summer the Cavs signed Dwight Powell on Aug 23rd, and if I am not mistaken there is a deadline coming up where the Cavs have to decide whether to offer Pointer some sort of contract in order to retain his rights. The contract can be totally non-guaranteed, I believe. (Someone correct me if I am wrong on this point; Coon's CBA FAQ is not very good, in my opinion, on second round picks.) So we will see what happens with him.

I don't understand the signing and forgive me for my ignorance. Is he a legit backup or just a trade filler?

He is a camp invite. If he plays good we keep him, if we does not we cut him.

Basically Cunningham has just a slightly better chance of making the final roster as i do.

I see us using this 15 spot like this all year. Keep a player on a non-guaranteed deal and use him for practice and maybe 3-5 mins a game in blow outs.

Because of the tax. we only use spot 15 for a useful player. Every contract needs to be multiplied by 3.5 or 4.5. If a vet min, it could cost us 2.8 mill or 3.6 mill in tax.

While the tax wont keep us from re-signing tristan or smith, it will matter to decisions like keeping cunningham.

Is it based on what we pay for the year or who is on the roster at the end of the year? If it is only end of the year I can see us keeping it open at that point and using it throughout the season.

Yes.

If we are keeping anyone from the rest, Cunningham should be the one over others easily. He is probably the best shooter amongst the rest which is essential for us and is quite quick as well.

Like this guys game... Athletic, good finisher around the rim, decent stroke. I don't know why people in here were writing him off when we signed him. I've always liked his game, but just for an end of the bench guy, can't hurt. Oh, another thing I love... He's ALWAYS attacking and pushing the tempo.

I was drafted by Atlanta Hawks in NBA 2k14 career mode and Cunningham was my favourite teammate. I would attack the paint and dish or do simple 1-2s with him and he would shoot threes at will. The guy shot like he was the love child of Ray Allen + Reggie Miller + Steph Curry. :chuckle:
