Jason Lloyd's final thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
26. What a league. Less than three weeks ago, Blatt’s future appeared in jeopardy. Now we’re talking about the franchise record winning streak. Talk to you Thursday after the Clippers.

Or, imagine telling someone 3-4 weeks ago that Thibs was more likely to get fired this season than Blatt.

Honestly, a lot more than just adding Mozgov, JR and Shump changed here. The Cavs were just fucking dreadful prior to a few weeks ago. The trades helped a lot but there is clearly an uptick in effort by the players we've had all year long. Kind of inexcusable but I'm just happy it's happened.

I think having reliable depth on the bench is a part of that, though. It's a lot easier to give effort when you know the lead isn't going to immediately evaporate when you sit down. That certainly wasn't the only issue, and I still think LeBron was trying to sabotage Blatt for a while there just like he did with Spoelstra during year one in Miami, but it was an issue.

Final 24 Thoughts by Lloyd:

CLEVELAND: Twenty-four thoughts for 24 points from Kevin Love in a 105-94 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers that wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicates…

1. I was chatting with Mike Miller in Memphis during the preseason when he said something that has stuck with me ever since. Miller saw potential for this team to be good defensively. I did not. (In fairness to me, the original Cavs team we were basing this on was not very good defensively. This revamped team is very good). Nevertheless…

2. “When these guys figure out how easy it is to score, they’ll exert more energy defensively,” he said. “That’s the way it was for us in Miami. We had so much talent on those teams, so many weapons that guys didn’t have to work hard to get good looks.”

3. I thought about that tonight watching J.R. Smith drain four 3-pointers. Smith has been raving since he got here about the space he has on offense and the looks he’s getting at the basket.

4. I thought about it watching Kyrie Irving, forced to carry the scoring load here for so many years, content to defend and move the ball around offensively. Irving didn’t get his first basket until a 3-pointer late in the third quarter.

5. There are so many theories and explanations for the Cavs’ defensive turnaround, but for my money it’s one of the most astonishing storylines of the season. The Cavs couldn’t guard a dead body for two months, now they’re smothering every team they play and harassing the Clippers into five technicals (more on that in a moment). Once teams are buried so low in statistical categories, it’s typically hard for them to recover to the extent the Cavs are flying up the charts.

I do not know what thread I am in. Or what topic this is. I do know I hate every Clips player not named Griffin.

This point tells the whole story:
8. The Clippers entered the night third in the league in scoring, averaging nearly 107 points a game. They were second in shooting, making 47 percent of their shots. The 94 points the Cavs limited them to tonight is deceiving because the Clippers scored 31 in the fourth quarter after the Cavs emptied the bench and stopped competing. But they held the Clippers to 63 points through three quarters Thursday after Los Angeles scored 64 against the Cavs in the first half three weeks ago.

The elite team has arrived. I just went over the stats from the last 10 games, including the Clippers game tonight. Lloyd said the defense locked in starting on January 19th (against the Bulls). Here's how we look compared with the rest of the NBA in that period (from January 19th until now; 10 game span).

- #04 in the NBA in DRTG (defense)
- #02 in the NBA in ORTG (offense)
- #01 in the NBA in NRTG (net rating)

- #02 in the NBA in REB%
- #03 in the NBA in TS%

If the defense can remain at this level, then we are now at a point where we can (statistically) be taken seriously as a championship contender.

This is fantastic news. I knew we had come a long way since the trades and LeBron's return, but I didn't realize the defense has shot up that far. Amazing.

Credit to Blatt, his staff, and the players. And to Griffin and Gilbert.

13. In case you haven’t seen it already, Chris Paul could be in line for a huge fine. Paul was upset that first-year referee Lauren Holtkamp gave him a technical in the third quarter. The Clippers were trying to inbound the ball quickly and Holtkamp wouldn’t let them. When Paul questioned why, she gave him a technical. He was adamant he didn’t swear at her, which is an easy trigger.

Umm what? Why?

^^and we take the foot off the pedal, unlike the warriors who just try to rack up stats to look dominant.

The best Cavs beat writer is about to get a new haircut.
Stay tuned for the next game thread (when it's up)

Here is the "trailer":

(Ideas for more haircut candidates are welcome - this streak continues and so I must not stop the Shumperting...)

I find it humorous that Lloyd thinks it's kinda wrong to possibly be setting a franchise record win streak against Byron Scott.

I feel it's perfectly fitting to break a franchise record win streak against the coach who took us through our franchise record losing streak.

No joke. I wish we could have an entire 20 game winning streak playing only Byron Scott coached teams. :chuckle:

This Hawks vs. Warriors game tonight is going to be cray-cray, though.
