Joe "Captain America" Harris

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

The kid has played ok and will benefit tremendously from the fact he'll likely be left open a lot and not expected to do much. He's a bit faster and moves his feet better than I expected but then again my expectations were quite low.

Best case scenario he gives us serviceable depth and a few minutes here or there. Worst case he gets to know Canton really really well like Karasev. Looking at our depth at that position, it won't make a big difference either way.

His blog will likely be his biggest contribution to the Cavs this year :chuckles:

Joe Harris is showing that he has a much more well rounded game than I expected.

I think that Harris would have been a top 15 pick in a normal draft that didn't have the depth of this one. Certainly top 20.

He actually gets down the court quickly, is alert on D, shoots well, and moves pretty well. Looks like he could be a solid bench SF/SG pretty quickly. Good energy and a scrapper.

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

With us picking up Miller, Jones, and possibly, Allen, Harris will be lucky to get off the bench.

Those guys will also be great mentors for Harris as he develops.

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

It would not be wise for us to rely on a 2nd round rookie to be a reliable option. Like Saor said, it will be great to have veteran guys here to play the role we want Harris to eventually work his way into.

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

was a bad pick, should have taken Cleanthony Early.

Early only knows one offensive play:

Step one: Get ball.

Step two: Try to score.

Phil Jackson was interviewed on NBA TV talking about how the young Knicks don't know how to operate in an offense. I think this is the main reason Early isn't a Cavalier. We already spent a few years waiting for Irving and Waiters to learn how to run an offense.

He'll get some minutes - probably gradually increasing as the season progresses. I think that he's likely to stick with the Cavs and not be sent to Canton. Harris has less of a learning curve because he's more mature as a guy that stayed at Virginia and became a seasoned vet there as a collegiate player. Miller, Jones, and hopefully Allen will be able to show him the ropes and help him grow into a great bench option down the road.

I love how physical he is. He's a lunch pail kind of guy that people will love that will benefit from the open looks his more talented team mates will get him.

It seems unlikely that he'll see any real minutes in Cleveland this year. Everybody always seems to think that these 2nd round guys are going to jump into the rotation. Hell, people were saying to about Powell, and now it's not even a sure thing that he makes the roster.

In a normal year, that may be true. But many of the second rounders from this year would have been first round rated in many other drafts. We also did see significant minutes from a second rounder named Varejão in his first year on a team that was trying to make a playoff push. Same situation? Certainly not. I wouldn't expect Harris to play nearly as much, but second rounders can surprise you sometimes. Not saying Harris is one of those guys and I don't expect him to see a lot of time this year, but we've been helped by second rounders in the past and quickly. Boozer, Varejão, and Gibson all jump to mind. There was another one from the past we got who was drafted in the 2nd and played decent minutes before emerging as a starter in Mark Price.

If he's good, Harris will earn minutes. If we see his minutes increase as the season wears on, we can guess that he's earned them (or that we've gotten injured). Do we need to count on him? No. I don't think you should count on a second round rookie, but guys can surprise you.

Harris is one where his game translates and he got a lot of minutes in college. He's less raw than other rookies, so he may help more than others. He's not being forced into playing time, but I think he'll be given the opportunity to earn it.

Whenever I see blanket statements like this from now on, I'm going to ask "why?"

Come on guys, this stuff is too easy to type. It's cool to have this opinion, but why do you have it? Why do you like Early? What makes you not want Harris? Why Early over Harris?

Don't just make your statements, debate them..

You guys say he's been good but IMO he's looked useless at everything but shooting wide open 3s and luckily being in the right place at the right time on D.

Whenever he catches a pass he tries to drive, it's cut off and all he does is pass

So he knows his limitations & doesn't force things when he's cut off? That's a good thing..

I like this guy's game. Much less flashy Karasev but he gets the job done and may take the weight room more seriously.

He knows how to play a team game which is more than I can say for a few of our last few prospects coming in.

All he has do this year in my eyes is acclimate to the NBA and bust his ass in practice. One of Jones or Miller might be gone due to old age /injury by next year and then we can worry about whether or not he has enough moxie.

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

If Harris sees the floor the one thing he has that a lot of shooters lack right now is a believable shot fake and the ability to still shoot the pull up on balance. He's an old school player with a solid triple threat game

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

Last night, Harris flashed some legit passing ability. With his halfway decent handles, that makes him a step up from the typical standstill three point shooter. In Blatt's variant of the Princeton offense, that could make him quite useful. You have to be able to pass, dribble, move, and shoot to execute that offense in it's purest form.

In the Bennett draft he would have gone anywhere from 13-22 That draft was awful.
