John DeFilippo - Browns OC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well, Shurmur has kinda got it made.

From Pluto:

The Browns were very pleased with receivers coach Mike McDaniel. They thought he did an excellent job teaching undrafted free agent Taylor Gabriel the nuances of the position, and was a help to veterans Hawkins and Austin.

Other than the suspended Gordon, the Browns didn't deliver much talent to McDaniel. When Gordon returned from his 10-game ban, he acted as if he wanted out of Cleveland.

Quick question: Who led the Browns in touchdown catches last season?

Answer: Travis Benjamin ... with three. I didn't know that until I checked the stats. As Benjamin regressed as a punt returner, he made some progress as a receiver.

McDaniel came to the Browns because he was connected to Shanahan. Wherever Shanahan lands (Chicago? Atlanta?), McDaniel is expected to follow.

So the Browns right now have opening for a coordinator, quarterback coach and receivers coach.

I'm sure a lot of coordinators would like some say in the offensive staff anyway. Even if these guys did have good reason to want out; they wanted out.

I'm expecting DeFilippo to get the job, Cavanaugh the QB coaches job and perhaps Al Saunders in a senior offensive role... (Hostler maybe has WRs coach?)

I've wanted Trestman from the get go but it seems like the Browns have some competition for his services... I've thought Trestman would be the best choice because of his experience and his ability to build QBs, something this team desperately needs..

But DeFilippo was my second choice and a guy who I would be intrigued with by the hire.. I'm all for trying to find up-and-coming coaches, as long as there is experience surrounding him... And by all means, it seems like DeFilippo is a highly thought of name and the Browns seem to have potential pieces in place to help surround him...

Callahan was really the only other name that I thought would be a good fit here... I wasn't too surprised or too upset he went elsewhere..

Gase has been a good coordinator and is a good mind but I don't want him in Cleveland.. I think it's one of those things where there would be too many cooks in the kitchen and with all the Gase-Haslam stuff out there, I don't trust Haslam with gase on this staff as a coordinator...

Probably fair to add this guy to the list of candidates they want but couldn't get.

At least the 49ers continue to make baffling coaching hires that nobody else would consider. Lane Kiffin is now a leading candidate for OC? Ewwwww...

Right now I'm with Smooth. They seem to think DeFilippo with help from Cavanaugh is in the bag, so they play the field for a slight upgrade. I think we end up with the too young and too old Youngstown duo.

I won't say much but according to sources (OBR) Trestman had a good interview but DeFilippo had an even better interview

I'd have to mentally prepare myself for the 50 throws a game offense that Martz would run here.

The free board at OBR has a bunch of insiders tripping over themselves to talk about how this is more of an "education" interview for Pettine. You can try to spin it, but...

Is he adept at coaching up a zone blocking based offense?

I don't think he's ever run it.

Conversely, his downfield passing scheme requires QBs with a strong arm who can push the ball through traffic.

I can't see how this would possibly be a fit for Cleveland as currently constructed.

It's not spinning this interview any type of way... Just because the Browns "interview" a candidate for the job, doesn't mean they're seriously considering that candidate for the job... Sometimes it's a favor to the coach or agent... Sometimes it' really is about information gathering from different coaches... Sometimes it's saying they're interviewing them for the OC spot but really looking at them in different roles...

For instance, I'd be willing to bet any amount of money that if Martz, Saunders or Hostler get hired, it's not for the OC job but for a more senior offensive advisory role type...

The Martz interview shouldn't really come as a concern, I don't see it as one..

I see the Browns covering a wide variety of candidates, trying to best piece together a staff that will succeed going forward..

Still think Trestman and DeFilippo as the top candidates, although it seems like Gailey is a guy to still watch too (SMH)...
