John DeFilippo - Browns OC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Martz as, like, a passing game coordinator/senior assistant would be very good. Saunders as a Senior assistant in general would also be awesome.

I just don't see the need to hire any of those guys as a full time OC. Just wouldn't seem wise either scheme wise or age wise.

Still think Trestman and DeFilippo as the top candidates, although it seems like Gailey is a guy to still watch too (SMH)...

I look forward to finding out what the heck is going on with Chan Gailey. Odd that a guy who has been out of football for over a year starts playing possum with paying gigs.

I think Martz is a head case. However, I will say that in a kinder, gentler NFL that has been created to protect receivers and Qb's, it's possible that his offense could work again. I don't see how you could put him under a defensive coach though. If it's just for an evaluation of the offensive talent on the team or consulting for players in the draft it would make a lot of sense.

Marrone is the Asst HC/OL Coach of the Jags, now Trestman is hired..

Looks like the guru, Adam Gase, might end up in Jacksonville.. Not much better than avoiding the Browns, unless you look highly upon him getting cozy with Marrone in Jax..

As long as "the front office" keeps forcing Manziel onto the field and at the same time threatening "no coach's job is safe" in the media, there will be a limited number of interested coaches. Jax has issues, but Bortles looks like a guy who belongs on the field.

Sure does.

Yep, you're totally right. And kudos to @AZ_ for saying he liked Bortles prior to the draft.

I was more being snarky towards Gase with my post, though. It's funny how many people have interviewed for Cleveland jobs (last year and this year), yet Gase the Great thinks he's above the job/City. Now, he's running for a seat in this year's musical chairs. :chuckle:

Huge risk for Gase, he can't like how the end of the season unfolded for Denver.

He had a golden ticket attacking defenses with Manning, then all of a sudden John Fox is out of a job and he goes from driving the Rolls Royce to a Pontiac G6.

Okay, Trestman to the Ravens stings... That one hurts..

Interesting that the openings are starting to be filled and Gase is still looking for a job..

I'm split on whether or not I, as a fan, even want the Browns to interview Gase if he decides he wants to. Not because of spite, but because he clearly doesn't want to be here. Why go through another Kyle Shanahan? I don't want to be hearing about him being half-way invested in the Browns and looking for a better gig..

Outside of Manning, the best QB Gase has coached is Jon Kitna. I wonder if the Tebow circus is part of the reason he's staying away?

It might be a factor for him, but he didn't even want to be our head coach last year, and that was before drafting Manziel.

Where is Gase going now? Not many fluffy jobs out there anymore. Perhaps, he's really gambling and waiting for Manning's next move.

On a side-note, I wish we didn't just fire Chud. He would be a competent guy to look at for the job.

Edit: I actually believed that they were talking about the player for a second. Upon 30 more seconds of research, Olson was the OC for the Raiders last year. Going to have a chance to work with Bortles after having worked with Carr last season.

Always cracks me up how personal people take stuff like Adam Gase deciding that the Browns situation might not be the most stable. It always turns into a personal vendetta, like he did it because he secretly hates the city and its collective children.

It's this simple- if he is the best candidate and he is willing to risk the situation- none of the prior 3 head couches made it past 2 years n as of now his QB is Johnny Manziel- then you hire him. If he is getting hc offers next year it is because he did a great job. If he struggles, history points to a new OC anyway. Obviously you don't want to hire a guy who is looking two steps ahead like Shanahan but that is also what you get when you want that guy with potential. Can't have that coveted young guy n expect him to just stay an OC. Not if they are successful.

Anyhow, I would be shocked if Gase sees this situation as any less volatile than last year. I think this team either goes with a vet who can handle the one year possibility without choking or the unproven guy. I just can't see Gase tying himself to this team unless there is some deep hidden friendship between him and Pettine like Chud had with Norv. And if the goal is continuity then they need to promote from within.
