3 Sandusky brothers guilty in roles to skim $1.8 million

Three brothers appeared together in federal court Thursday and admitted their part in skimming more than $1.8 million in cash from three restaurants their family operates in the Sandusky area.

Andreas Gonos, 28; Chris Gonos, 32, and Kyriakos “Kouly” Gonos, 30, each pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Helmick to one count of conspiracy to structure financial transactions to evade filing currency transaction reports.

The Sandusky men admitted they made cash deposits of just under $10,000 on multiple occasions between 2007 and 2009 to avoid having to report the cash income from the family’s two Dianna’s Deli restaurants in Sandusky and from Dianna’s in Port Clinton. “Each of these defendants personally engaged in numerous structured transactions,” Joseph Wilson, an assistant U.S. attorney, told the court.

Each faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when they are sentenced Feb. 11, although Judge Helmick said he will have the option to place them on probation rather than send them to prison.

Also charged in the conspiracy are the men’s parents, Haralambos Gonos, 52, and Sofia Skoura, 52.

Haralambos Gonos, who is scheduled for a change-of-plea hearing in federal court Oct. 30, is charged with conspiracy to structure financial transactions to evade filing currency transaction reports and with conspiracy to structure financial transactions to evade filing Form 8300 — an Internal Revenue Service form required for cash payments of $10,000 or more — between March, 2010, and November, 2011.

Both Haralambos Gonos and Ms. Skoura also are charged with conspiracy to engage in bulk cash smuggling for allegedly taking cash in excess of $10,000 with them to Greece, where they have a home.

Mr. Wilson said after the hearing that prosecutors believe the Gonos family ran “essentially cash businesses,” though he did not say why.

“In some cases, people simply don’t want the government to know their business,” he said. “Some people can do it with the purpose of evading taxes.”

After the plea hearing ended, Judge Helmick found that Chris Gonos had violated the conditions of his bond by testing positive for marijuana use Sept. 25 and Oct. 10. The judge did not alter the terms of his release, but warned him that future violations could result in a change of his bond and could affect the sentence he imposes in February.

“I’m sorry, Your Honor. I made a big mistake,” Chris Gonos told the court.

UPDATE: Comments from the alleged victim, Chris Gonos, about the fight. "Yeah, it actually all started through me. We had a room – it was my brother’s birthday — so we were staying at the Metropolitan at the 9. We partied there, and at the end of the night I was going back up to my room, and I noticed the guy. I was like, 'Man, that’s Johnny Manziel.' They were trying to keep it quiet, keep it low, and I was like 'Johnny Football!' I was just excited. But anyways, I went to give him like a handshake, or dap or whatever you want to call it, one of his buddies like tackled me. It was going down, a whole bunch of people started fighting. It ended pretty quick."

"I got a bruised hip and a bruised elbow, and somebody hit me in the back of the head, too. My brother saw what was going on and he ran he tackled Johhny Manziel – I guess he got the sack and the fumble. He tackled him, yeah, I’m talking about he speared him all the way to the back wall. I was cornered; I was by myself and Johnny Manziel and like three or four of his buddies were all coming at me. (My brother) just came to help me out, and I guess Johnny sucker punched him while the security guard was holding him. It should be all on video."

"No [one was arrested], like 20 officers came and I was sitting in the lobby because I did not do anything wrong but be a fan. All these cops run into the lobby, and they’re like, “Who was fighting, who was fighting?” and I just raised my hand, and was like, listen, watch the camera, and stuff like that. I may be guilty of being a fan, but that’s about it. I even showed them the guy that sucker punched me and the cops walked right up to him, talking to him for a while, and they let us all go. They just told me I had to leave the hotel, and me and my ride, we left. Manziel never punched me, but he got a sucker punch on my brother."

"I know somebody else in the group smashed Johnny right in the face. Smashed him, smashed him. I watched the whole game to see if we could spot him on the sidelines."

Update II:

I hope the fan got his ass beat, honestly. And I hope Manziel gets off without punishment.

Only issue here is Manziel being out until around 2:30 on a game weekend. As Farmer said, you don't want to see that.

First, the guy is with his girlfriend. Then he's asking for a hug. Then, he's going for the "dap".. What happend, bro?

He is rich and the guy has a record. Johnny should be fine.

Johnny's weekend warrior exploits have come up more than once this season.

Honestly hadn't heard about it much throughout the season, very few "sightings about town" and yada yada yada.

Seems as though he's getting the hang of this whole celebrity thing.

There was a late night tweet about "epic night" at 4:30am, T. West was implicated and suddenly found his snaps temporarily cut the next weekend. I still want to see Johnny grow up and be the starter in a few seasons, learning under Hoyer... but I agree we need to see less of this stuff.

What? Apparently you've decided to turn a blind eye. My friends have seen him at the Ohio City bars on game weekends on at least 3 occasions. Kid's a boozer.

Nice, should always trust my instincts. Kid has no idea how to be a pro.

I've seen Brian Hoyer at Town Hall before and Athyba Rubin at Barley a few years ago... Guys don't need to be locked up and they are still relatively young.
