Jon Leuer (assigned to D-League again, 1/3)

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

Don't get why people think guys like Sammy Sam, Jones, Gody, and Eric would make the roster over Leuer. Cavs need a big that can shoot, and Leuer fits the bill. The fact he can conceivably play both PF and C gives him a leg up. Plus, we already have two defensive minded bigs in TT and AV. Leuer has the ability to space the floor, and with Tawn gone the Cavs need a big who can shoot the 3.

not sure what leuer has done to show he can get playing time over those guys

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

Great pickup for the Cavs. I remember seeing him play for the Bucks last season and thinking he might end up on of the big steals of that draft. And he still can be, if he'll manage to improve on D.

There's a nice article on him at Draftxpress, about him working out with David Lee. Gives a nice perspective on Lee too, btw.

Here's his Draftxpress page, with the article mentioned at the top:

Really, for the monetary investment, this is a complete steal. Leuer is a great changeup to TT, and should mesh well with our offense. After watching some video on him and checking out his combine numbers, I was very surprised at just how athletic he is. I think he should provide us with some good mismatches against a lot of PF's around the league. I think there is a pretty decent cieling here, and his age is a great benefit. This may end up being one of the better acquisitions of the offseason when we look back on it down the road. Kudos to the FO on this one.

Leuer was a significantly better shooter who got a couple assists and avoided turning the ball over.

Leuer improved his team's offense and the defense when we was on the floor.

Maybe look at their advance stats this past season:

Leuer: 15.3 PER, .536 TS%, 11.9 TRB%, 7.3 AST%, 2.3 BLK%, 8.1 TOV%, 111 Ortg, 105 Drtg.

Samuels: 11.1 PER, .517 TS%, 12.4 TRB%, 4.2 AST%, 1.8 BLK%, 16.5 TOV%, 98 Ortg, 108 Drtg.

So with the exception of a small margin in rebounding, Leuer beats him in every category, and is clearly a better passer who doesn't turn the ball over as often as Samuels.

Aside from that, his ability to shoot from outside adds another dimension, since he can draw away bigs from the paint, which gives guys like Kyrie, Waiters and TT more room to operate.

ETA: Douglar beat me to it...

Great move!!

I wanted him in the second round in 2011 and was genuinely pissed that the Cavs traded the pick away to Orlando instead. I can now completely admit to being wrong because Grant got his man in the end. He looks like a very good stretch four candidate, and might take some minutes from Casspi at the three.

At lot of people (myself included) were critical of that Orlando trade in 2011, but it's certainly looking pretty good now. The Cavs picked up two likely early second round picks (on the assumption Orlando will manage to trade Howard and will be among the worst teams in the league the next couple of years) and still got a guy that they presumably were interested in had they held on to the 2011 second rounder.

On the surface, the pick up doesn't make a lot of sense given that the Cavs already have some depth at PF (at least on paper) and other positions are clearly weaker, but big men have value (see: Boston playing Stiemsma and Hollins in the ECF). And for those concerned about roster flexibility, I don't think that's a big issue. The team now has 16 players with at least some guaranteed salary, but if need be, the Cavs can certainly cut guys in order, for instance, to absorb a salary in a trade. And after all, if I'm not mistaken, even with Baron Davis' salary, I think the Cavs are still a shade short of the 85% of salary cap threshold, so they would have needed to spend the money anyway.

That's not to say that Leuer or any other of their young PFs will have any value to a contender at the deadline though. That's why signing a vet on a favorable contract held some attraction to me, since you could conceivably flip a player like that at the deadline. But Humphries proved too expensive, and they lost out on Scola (who they would have had to keep till next July anyway), so the strategy of targeting a younger guy with some value seems like a good backup plan, and in the long run may turn out to be a better idea.

What I find interesting is that he is the stretch forward and Samardo is the post up big. Yet, he had a better offensive rebound rate. The defensive end is likely his need to spend some time on strength conditioning and rebound positioning. I also notice that he is the younger player. All looks good to me. I think a certain incumbent needs to work hard in camp and be focused this time around.

Could height be a factor for the offensive rebounding difference?

Samuels: 6-8 or 6-9
Leuer: 6-11.5

In addition to the advanced statistics those in previous posts have mentioned, Leuer has more versatility than Sam Sam too. Leuer is a PF that can log minutes at center and small forward in certain situations.

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

I think the Cavs are getting ready to move Varejao somewhere. They'll probably see how the newly slimmed Samardo and the newly acquired Leuer do before they make any moves. But if they wait and do that, Varejao will probably be injured by the trade deadline. Eh, even if that doesn't happen I'm glad to see we got the kid. I wanted him to back up Antawn before I even knew we were going to take Tristan, and now it looks like him and Samardo will be backing up Tristan and Varejao. Leuer looks to be a great role player, good pickup Cavs!

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

Can't go wrong with this guy .. seems to have "gator arms" much like Zeller. On the surface, I would guess that he will be brought in and fight for a roster spot with Luke Harangody.

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

Does anybody have the comparisons of Luke and Jon?

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

I've always gotten a Ryan Anderson vibe from Leuer (tall, lanky, good shooter, weak rebounder/defender for his size). If he can be our poor-man's version of Anderson, I'll be thrilled.

They both have 7 foot wingspans, which isn't great for their height but hardly gator arms. And I don't trust standing reach after reading about all the discrepancies in measuring that. If he's competing with Harangody, I don't like Luke's chances. I'd also be worrying if I were Samardo.

Re: Cavs Sign Jon Leuer (claimed off waivers)

Etwuan Moore next please...
JaJuan Johnson also might be released.

JuJuan is a nba player, but you should know as a fellow boilermaker, you know Etwuan is most likely not a legit NBA player
