Josh Smith Cut

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think everyone focuses too much on what Smith can't do, I still think he can be an asset on the right team in a more defined role. Houston would be a great fit for him, and they have a need at his position with Terrence Jones going down.

Seeing a minute on the wing for the shooting starved Pistons was a disaster, he works much better as a small ball power forward working from the elbows. He's still a clever passer capable of hitting cutters through tight windows, he's actually the league leading PF in assists per game (4.7).

In Detroit his defensive intensity dwindled while his shot selection grew more and more horrendous, hopefully playing with legit stars in Harden and Howard (old AAU pal) reverses that trend.

So right now it looks like the leading suitors for Smith are:
  • Houston - can offer BAE ($2.1 Mil) & Howard friendship
  • Dallas - can offer Min Salary ($1.4 Mil) & Rondo friendship
  • Miami - can offer injured player exception ($2.65 Mil)

Does what they offer just come out of what Detroit has to pay him?

No that was amnesty, this is out right cut, iirc Detroit did use the stretch provision so its the remaining contract value averaged out over 4 years which is roughly a 5.25$ cap hit per season after this season.

This season they are on hook for his full salary if I'm reading everything correctly

Might as well cut the difference between what Houston or Miami can offer in half because his Pistons salary gets reduced by half of the difference. When he's going to make 15.4 million already (his Pistons salary + league minimum), I'm not sure another $350-600k is going to make much difference.

Under the stretch provision. THe set off actually might translate into additional money for the player
according to the CBA faq
If another team signs a player who has cleared waivers, the player's original team is allowed to reduce the amount of money it still owes the player (and lower their team salary) by a commensurate amount. This is called the right of set-off. This is true if the player signs with any professional team -- it does not have to be an NBA team. The amount the original team gets to set off is limited to one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran (if the player is a rookie, then the rookie minimum is used instead).

For example, suppose a fifth-year player is waived with one guaranteed season remaining on his contract for $5 million. If this player signs a $1 million contract with another team for the 2011-12 season, his original team gets to set off $1 million minus $762,195 (the minimum salary for a one-year veteran in 2011-12), divided by two, or $118,902. The team is still responsible for paying $4,881,098 of the original $5 million. Note that between his prior team and new team the player will earn a combined $5,881,098, which was more than he earned prior to being waived.

I never can get enough of that video. Trying to make sense of the facial expressions of both Smith and Van Gundy is a tough task. Smith looks like he's thinking that he was really close, while Van Gundy..I can't even tell.

He has reportedly committed to the Rockets. Good luck McHale, enjoy that new extension!

i actually like this for the rockets if they (read: howard) can really get him to buy into his role . little wary about him demanding a starting role on a team, hopefully that doesn't translate into demands for mins and touches too and if not they should be really, really good. starting is fine, but he should get pulled like 4-5min in for jones and they should use the smith/dmo combo a lot.

this move is better than the mavs' one for rondo to me.

edit: but in the case things do go south re: his attitude, i wonder how quick they will be to cut him and what, if any, ramifications that would have on howard's attitude too.

Josh goes back to the 4, defends like old Josh Smith and that team is tough

But he doesn't help their spacing

so i guess josh smith will play some but is not starting tonight against memphis. definitely gonna check it out, but obviously you can't read too much into how well/poorly it goes.

worth noting zbo is out again for memphis though.

so i guess "some" was an understatement - 32mins and more shots than harden & howard combined! howard was in foul trouble but still, goddamn did he decide to make his presence known in his debut haha. in fairness, he did play pretty well. it'll be interesting to see how the rockets look once they get some experience together (and t jones returns).

one thing i am curious about is why shved got minutes, albeit limited, ahead of isaiah cannon. cannon obviously is no star, but he's a legitimate, much-needed 3pt threat whereas shved is terrible.
