JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We have to understand who we are dealing with. JR Smith is not a 100% confident guy. His confidence waivers and a large part of his inconsistency within his career is riding that wave of belief in himself or self doubt. Right now, it's important to boost the mental side as much as possible. Giving him the start will reinforce that. I do think it sucks to have to coddle a grown man like this but it's a necessary evil as a coach. Blatt needs to give him the start and hope that he can get off early.

Wasn't just off last night, wasn't getting any lift on his jumper and was just throwing it up with his arms, completely off balance.

Not sure if it's an injury or what.

The downside is defense. J.R has left a lot to be desired on that end.

Both JR and Shump are going to be playing big minutes no matter what, so we're going to have to live with whatever negatives JR has on the defensive end regardless of if he starts or comes off the bench.

Plus, JR's defense has sagged as his offensive production has dropped. If we want/need improved defense from JR, then the best thing to do is get him going offensively, which has the added advantage of forcing Klay to expend more energy guarding him.

What happens to Shump if placed on the bench? Does his confidence fall a part? I think he's mentally stronger than J.R but we can't lose his effort and play either.

Not if Coach Blatt tells him why. Plus, Shump hasn't exactly been burning it up on the offensive end either, so we wouldn't be losing much. Dude will play his ass off defensively no matter what.

J.R needs to make a difference off the bench for us. We need his scoring from THERE. Can't expect Shump to do that.

Except JR isn't providing any scoring off the bench. That's the whole problem.

Anyway, the "what have we got to lose" argument is that we can always just sub him out fairly quickly if it isn't working. His confidence is for crap right now anyway. The downside is minimal.

But the upside? Heck, if shaking up the batting order gets JR back on track offensively, he'll likely get back on tract defensively, and having an engaged, effective JR for the last three games may well be the difference between hoisting the Larry O'Brien and going home.

It's a basic risk/reward calculation. We cannot win this thing without better production from both JR and Shumpert.

Bingo. Some lineup changes are necessary. If GS goes small again on Sunday to start, I say start JJ at power forward and Smith at guard. Force GS to have to deal with more shooters, and if one of the two of them can hit a shot or two it will open things up for everyone and maybe get the team on a roll. You can always sub out early if things aren't working in some fashion.

Actually, we did pretty well against that small lineup to start the game, at least for the first half of the first quarter or so. Pounding Moz works.

The problem was on the offensive end. We couldn't buy a jumper from anyone.

Game 4 L was mostly about fatigue and GS with back to wall throwing and us their best effort. Our turn to respond.
You better believe LBJ is pissed about his production. The Cavs focus on Sunday will be completely different.
Can't lose two in a row. We had a chance in spite of everything in game 4. Need LBJ to give everything he got in the next two.
Seeing 20,000 people hating you sharpens these guys. There is something about it. For the love of god JR swish must show up and deliver pipes.
I can't believe he is mentally this frail. I thought he is a guy who doesn't give a shit but that is the reason i guess he isn't a ray allen type. He doesn't have it all sorted out in is head. Good lord make some shots drop for us in Oakland.

Agreed. JR was consistent all season and in the first round. His inconsistencies from 3 started when he came back from suspension, and went to the bench. He had his moments coming off of the bench, but there is no denying he has been way more inconsistent and out of focus. Put him back in the starting lineup. Even if it means bringing Mozgov or Tristan off of the bench to start the game.

This is an interesting observation. Haven't thought of that.

I think the larger issue with JR is it's one thing when we are relying on him to be effectively a 4th option scorer like most of the season behind LBJ/Kyrie/Love.

But just like with the Knicks, when you are relying on him to be effectively a 2nd option scorer with all of our injuries - his erratic play becomes more of an issue and he starts to press.

This x10000. Not sure why I didn't think of it that way, totally true though.

He's in the exact same situation he was in when he sucked for NY.

I like this idea as an adjustment to GS small ball and defense they showed in game four. If they trap Lebron, after he makes his first pass that player should swing the ball and the next needs to shoot or attack.

I like the idea of a hybrid small lineup keeping Mozgov on the floor vs their smalls but replacing Tristan with Jones because running sets through Moz adds another element to our offense and Jones and Smith open the floor for hockey assists.

If GS wants to stay small they showed no answer for Moz. I am envisioning sets similar to the magic with Howard and shooters except spearheaded by Lebron.

At this point everyone on our team is gritty and Shumpert, Thompson and Delly still need to bring that to win.

I like it. Put JR in the starting lineup and give him a chance. We've gotta take risks here or we're gonna get smoked. The simple truth is without a couple big games from JR we're probably going to lose. This series just became much more offense minded with the change in pace.

Some of you idiots need to ease up on JR... It's not like the guy is trying to miss shots, he probably wants to make them so bad he's pressing which could be a reason he's struggling. The dude has been great for us all year, and now that he's having a rough couple of games people are already starting to turn on him? That's pathetic and if you're turning on him right now after all he's done for this team this last half of the season, you're not a real Cavs fan. He needs us to support him now more than ever. JR has made countless big shots for us this year, he's bought into playing defense and being a team player, he's also been great in the team chemistry department.
