JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm kind of hoping we don't get him back. I figure Griffin can pull something off to get someone comparable at hopefully a lower price. He'd be okay at 6 mil a year but if he's going to be asking for big money it doesn't seem to make sense.

Well it's been a fun ride.
I actually liked JR smith on our team and would've liked it if he stayed.

If he leaves, then the Cavs need a backup PG, a backup SF, and a SG who can shoot.

It will be tough to fill all three needs with the Haywood contract (and not much in terms of sweeteners to add), the mini MLE, and minimum contracts.

I think he re-signs, though you never know.

Their other need -- a 5th big -- they have potentially filled with either Kaun or Christmas (or both).

he hasn't left, he only opted out (didn't opt in). He already said his preference is to return.

if we don't get him back, we lose the ability to spend the money it takes to sign him (thus can't use it on a replacement).

Would think Smith would opt-in for one more season at $6.5 million to stay here and try to win a title. Do you guys really think someone pays him more than that per season? He played good with Lebron James on his team but what is the odds he takes that attitude to a different team without that leadership? Don't really understand the logic behind opting out. Likely to price himself out of the range we are willing to pay. Maybe Shump starts and Harris develops behind him at Shooting Guard.

Forgive my ignorance, but is it a situation now where the offers all come in and the Cavs can match the highest offer or how does it work?

The logic behind him opting out is that he wants to sign a longer term deal, preferably with us.

It may be less about the amount per season, and more about the number of seasons. Him crapping the bed in the Finals probably cost him some serious coin as it probably scared off some other teams, which may hold his price down.

He had a player option and could opt-in and make $6.5 million a year. He opted out and is an unrestricted free agent. He can sign anywhere. Shumpert, Thompson, and Delly are all restricted free agents and we can match any offers for them but not for Smith.

I'm hoping for that but I have a feeling that JR thinks someone will give him more than $7 a year and for a few years. He may even be right but I would have felt better about him being a Cavalier if he opted-in. We have a lot of other players and salaries to worry about and don't know what we can afford to pay him. Don't think we can afford to overpay for him.
