JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Night and day. Though it has only been a short time, there appears to be a huge difference in how JR responds to a LeBron led team and a Melo one.

JR seems happy, even whimsical at times. "LeBron James: The JR Smith Whisperer."

Wonder if JR will be eligible for 6th man of the year. Not sure how that works. He has obviously been starting for us while Shump has been out. Don't know what he did in NY. He will be back to the bench when Shump is back, but he could easily be a 6th man candidate if eligible.

According to Wikipedia, to be eligible you just have to come off the bench in more games than you start. I'd imagine there's a minimum number of games played required as well, but I couldn't find it in the two minutes I spent looking and don't care enough to conduct further research.

In regards to the above, Smith has played in 31 games so far this year and started 12 of them, so assuming he moves back to the bench when Shumpert returns and stays there (for the most part), he should be eligible.

I was probably more excited to see JR than Shump honestly because I've been a fan for a while but it's a great tandem to get. Huge boost going forward.

He hasn't figured out the Cleveland night life yet :chuckle: so we seem to be getting sober JR. Hopefully he stays away from Steph Floss who DJ's at pretty much every popular club in Cleveland.

people really underestimated Smith's ability when we got him.. dude has no fear.. has been great so far.. and has given this team a spark

Best of all, he was nothing more than a salary dump to NY.

And no matter what he does with the Cleveland night life, the reality is that it isn't remotely like NY. And, to add on, JR is from the NY area. Probably didn't help either.

I remember Mike Dunleavy Sr. on SiriusXM said this immediately after the trade that it could really be a winner because JR was out of NY and the distractions that come with it. And he does not need distractions.

How nice is it to have J.R who will just fire it up, opposed to watching Dion who slows the ball up, then tries to rock somebody to sleep with the handle, only to throw up a fadeaway jumper with 8 seconds left on the shot clock.

If you are determined to shoot it, shoot it as soon as possible. Hesitating is the worst thing to do for so many reasons. JR was stepping INTO it! Loved seeing it. He just seems so much quicker and more spontaneous, whereas Dion wasn't good enough to be so methodical; he's not going to pick you apart w/ his mind. JR's energy and understanding of getting buckets is just so much more fun to watch IMO.

This is another key with JR. He is a shooter, not a pounder. He took by my counts, 2 bad shots last game. Funny thing 1 went in, lol.

But he is a shooter, he either shoots or passes the ball. He makes decisive decisions with the ball. We already have 2 pounders in Lebron and Kyrie. Having a sg who can actually shoot and doesn't "hog" the ball is huge.

He really is the perfect fit for what we need from the bench. I cant wait till Shump comes back as i think that will really complete our rotation. We desperately need that instant offense from the bench, and for sure Jr is instant offense.

That's JR Smith. He will take some of these really weird looking low percentage type shots and they go in. He has certain
"pet shots" that he takes that would be a bad shot for 99% of players. And they often go in. The guy really is a freakish talent - teams know this and have been trying to work around his personality to harness that ability. Happened a couple years ago with the Knicks. Can totally happen again.

Plus he can hit open shots. I've almost lost count of guys who haven't been able to hit open catch and shoot jumpers this year on a consistent basis. Miller, Marion, Dion, Delly, Smith have been unable to hit shots that they would bury in the gym. We have a history of this happening (Harris, Hot Buttered Donny, Wesley): how ironic if JR Smith is the guy to break the history of Cleveland where jumpshots go to die

Delly actually does a good job of hitting open shots.

(you can look at these stats now that NBA has the player tracking)

Delly:
Wide open (6+ feet) - 48.8%
Open (4-6 feet) - 30.4%

Miller:
Wide open - 48.4%
Open - 23.3%

Jones:
Open and/or wide open (bug in system here) - 31.8%
Tight - 45.8%. Interestingly he takes these at a higher frequency.

JR Smith:
Wide open - 37.9%
Open - 35.9%
Tight - 39.1%

Love:
Wide open - 34.1%
Open - 35.5%
Tight - 33.3%

Couldnt' find the link for open versus tight: did find catch and shoots and Lebron and Irving have our best numbers which is not good (Love has really bricked a lot of wide open 3's as well this year)

Anyone know JR's catch and shoot numbers? Seems like he's far better off the dribble than he is spotting up. That seems to be a low-key major reason for this team's streaky offense. Kyrie is better off the dribble. Love appears to be better off the dribble. And yet, LeBron creates numerous catch and shoot opportunities.

JR is shooting 40% on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers (among the league's best), but only 41% on catch-and-shoot 2-pointers (middle of the pack). With the Cavs he's taken 5.6 catch-and-shoot attempts per game, seventh most in the NBA and just below league leaders like CJ Miles (6.7) and Klay Thompson (6.2).

When pulling up he's shooting 42.5% from the floor, and 40% on 3-pointers. Looks like it doesn't matter how JR Smith fires it up; he's going to hit two of his five shots.

Decided to look at Kyrie and Love too- after being second in the league in 3P% on pullups last year (40.9%, right behind Durant at 41.1%) Kyrie is down to 31.7% this season. He's actually shooting 3's at a much better clip as a catch-and-shooter this year (42.9%).

You're right about Love though- despite ranking among the top-15 in catch-and-shoot opportunities he's only converting 37.4% of attempts, 35.3% of his three-pointers. That number inches up to 42.6% from the field on his pull ups, but a ghastly 28.6% off the dribble from deep.
