JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If JR would be a little smarter about his shot selection and/or have a higher basketball IQ a la Thompson or Allen, I honestly believe he could be an elite long range/mid range jump shooter (maybe ~40-41% from 3).
As already pointed out, he has all the tools to be elite at shooting the ball:
He has a high release. He has a quick release. And maybe most importantly for a jump shooter, he has high confidence in his shot.

With him, it's still a thin line between genius and insanity, but so far I have to say I'm very impressed by his performances.

J.R. Already is an elite shooter. His catch and shoot numbers are through the roof from 3.

What has killed his percentage throughout his career is his propensity to take just 2-3 awful 3 point shots per game. Pull ups off the dribble, fade aways, shots from 28 feet, etc.

When he spots up, receives a pass and pulls the trigger he is absolutely lethal. He's in the 45% range.

With J.R. It has been about shot selection.

Probably a double edged sword for someone like him. When you are that good at something and you hit those periods where you literally can't miss it is a fine line between the confidence of knowing every shot you take is going to be good and hesitating to make sure its a smart shot.

He will also jack up that end of quarter half court shot which will sink his percentage but I dont mind him taking.

He's just decisive. Love tries to make a move or react to someone else's move before shooting. If he just let it fly at the opportunity like Smith, he'd average 25.

Who would have thought JR Smith was going to be an impact player for us?

exactly. JR is a shot hog, not a ball hog. and playing with the starting unit, those shots are going to be good, open looks; in rhythm.

on top of that he's actually an above average passer and can see the floor/anticipate well

We'll see if Blatt has learned anything yet.

There is no way JR should come out of the starting lineup with the way this team is playing.

They are scoring at will, the energy is great, and the defense is much improved.

And, JR is playing efficiently.

Just out of curiosity guys, if your opinion, if Miami had acquired J.R. somehow during their run with LeBron, what kind of impact would he have had? The way he's playing now, compared to his reputation, just doesn't add up. There's something there. To me, in a limited sample size, it looks like we have a Big 4 now or maybe at least a Big 3.5. Maybe he turns out to be a pumpkin, but wow, I'm impressed.

I disagree. When Shumpert is ready physically, he starts. The bench still isn't scoring well at all, and the starters are playing a TON of minutes as a result. I'd rather have JR to build on leads that the starters get, or at least hold them. I don't like watching leads blead because nobody can score if LeBron/Kyrie are sitting. JR adds that extra weapon to stagger the offense.

One thing I've also noticed for a while about Smith...he has tremendous lift when he shoots the ball. He gets off the floor quickly which helps to create extra space for his shot.

I love this guy!! And I believe play off occasions will bring out a whole new level in him too.

ding ding ding. 9 games is nothing.

the narrative with jr all along has been that he is an immature headcase with a propensity to chuck like crazy. both of those aspects are still huge question marks, especially as the season moves along and guys like love are (hopefully) better integrated into the offense. he needs to be able to handle less shots when it's just not falling - like against utah when he couldn't hit anything from 3 but still took 11. he isn't going to be able to take, 15-20 shots per game night in and night out. how he responds to that is the million dollar question. if he's mature about it, has strict discipline, and totally buys into the team-first mentality he and the cavs will flourish. if he doesn't, we can have problems. thus far the good has definitely outweighed the bad, but again lets see how things progress because in his career the opposite has been the case.

for better or for worse, he is a gunner. what's vital is controlling that urge when it's just not working. although, i went to the game last monday and i will say it was flat out exciting as hell any time the ball was sent his way behind the arc. granted, it did help that he happened to be hot on that night but still - electrifying.

JR has always played well on good teams. Someone said it shortly after we acquired him, and I think it holds true...he's just a guy who adds to good teams and subtracts from bad ones. When he's on a good team he knows his role and plays reasonably smart basketball. When he's on a bad team he chucks away and doesn't give defensive effort. He's been subtracting from the Knicks the past two years and that colored what everyone thought of him (plus they overpaid him).

I do agree with those who have said he should remain in the starting line-up while he and the team are playing this well. No sense in fixing what isn't broken.
