JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like JR and what he provides this team but there's absolutely no way that JR will become a better catch-and-shoot player than Korver and Klay.

This is going to sound weird but this what I was expecting from him when he came into the league. Obviously too immature and it took him years to develop but he had one of the best looking jumpshots I've ever seen at such a young age.

He won MVP of the McDonald's High School with that jumper of his

Honestly who needs Ray Allen with what JR has been able to do? There is no reason to think he's going to go back to playing like he was on the Knicks with more PnR and Iso rather then the catch and shooter he's become in Cleveland.

JR is a lot younger, more athletic, better defender (not saying much but Allen was terrible last year), etc.

I don't disagree with any of what you said, but I'm just sort of wondering out loud - can't we have both? Imagine having them both on the floor at times in the playoffs? Or if that isn't feasible, playing them ~equal minutes at the 2 and the hotter of the two closes the game? Ray's experience in the very biggest moments, and his uncanny propensity to come through in them, is what makes him a HOF player and I'm quite certain that hasn't gone away. There is very few, if any, shooters in the history of this game that I'd rather have taking a shot in the very biggest of moments.

I would love to have Ray on our side for this run.. just one time. I do not disagree that JR is a more valuable player - by a pretty good margin - but he can't play 48 minutes, he does have off games, and he hasn't played on the very biggest of stages. Hell, maybe he'd learn a thing or two from Ray assuming we keep him going forward.

Go get Ray, I say.

Did anyone not see Ray's defense last year? We already went thru 3 guys who are shooters but can't play a lick of defense. More minutes from Ray means less minutes for JR and Shumpert and I just don't see how that would be a good thing barring injury. If he was cool playing the Mike Miller role then go get him but his PT demands make me want to stay far away from him.

Maybe people wanna relive the nightmare that was Mike Miller and James Jones seeing the court. We saw what negative defenders like Jones and Miller did during the losing streak. Ray Allen is an atrocious defender, why mess up a good thing we got going on the wing right now.

Seriously stop with the Ray Allen dreams. Why would anyone want him on this team? We have enough shooters years and years past their prime who can't play defense.

Uh the problem with Miller and Jones isn't their shot has not been falling. Ray is one of the best of all time. We think we don't need him until we do. The question is not whether we can use Allen but whether it is Miller or Jones who gets jettisoned to add him. LBJ could still use a minutes reduction late in the year so floor time will still be there for Smith and Shump. Some of you are just getting silly.

We want him so he doesnt go to Chicago or ATL. Plus, at the end of the games come playoff time, lebron probably trusts him more than JR or Love to make a shot. He knows with Ray on the floor theres most likely no help defender coming over

Personally, I dont think he will be any better of a shotmaker than Miller or Jones. Ray is washed.

We don't have anything close to 48 minutes to give even to a combination of Smith/Allen. That's kind of the point. Either JR or Shumpert is going to be the starting SG, and whomever isn't is going to be the primary backup. And when you mentioned playing Allen and JR "equal minutes at the two", you're really cutting into JR's playing time in a big way. In that case, neither Allen nor JR is going to be getting enough minutes in a game to get into a rhythm of any kind.

If we're going to sign Allen, then we ought to cut either Jones or Miller, because given who else we have on the roster, there is no way you'd even see those guys all on the court anyway.

This is assuming you can just tuck Ray Allen into the bench like Miller/Jones until the time comes to use him. No. Ray wants J.R./Shumpert's starting spot. He also wants their minutes in crunch-time.

In other words, he wants his. The team doesn't need that.

I was more hopeful then a lot of posters on JR just because of his catch and shoot jumpers but damn was not expecting this kind of player.
He's not only playing as well as he did when he won 6th man of the year but frankly better. His catch and shoot ability fits in perfectly with the other Big 3, he passes the ball well (probably our best post entry feeder), and doesn't get in the way otherwise. Not a great defender but he's athletic enough that he's just not going to get totally burnt.

Mozgov was clearly the center piece of the trade but we kind of pulled of a mini-Rasheed trade with JR. Taking a talented headcase who had worn out of his welcome and putting him in the right situation suddenly gets you a piece which completes the puzzle. Dion was supposed to make that leap into as the #4 guy who was good enough to be a top 3 player on other teams but instead we just traded for one. Wonder how depressed the league would have been with the Cavs not only adding Lebron and KLove but also a Danny Green type of shooter at the SG on top of that to complement them

So I was curious as we are around 1/4th of a season worth of games with JR and Shump. Combined they are giving us:

20.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.2 apg, 3 spg, shooting 43.7% from the floor and 37.5% from 3

for a guy who was giving us:

10.5 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.3 spg, shooting 40.4% from the floor and 25.6% from 3.

David Griffin managed to double the contributions of a player while improving efficiency, athleticism, length, depth, and defense in one single trade. Has been a huge win for the Cavs so far, hope JR and Shump keep it up.

not to mention the ripple effect of thaving them play within the system and not fucking the rest of our team into oblivion
