Keifer Sykes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So, with this guy apparently being a priority given the amount of time it took for us to agree to a deal with him, safe to say our starting 5 for the Summer League is now in place. Sykes, Harris, Pointer, Christmas, Kirk. Only 2 weeks away from more Cavs basketball being played.

so does this mean he will just play in Canton? or he will be on our 15 man roster?
He can play in Canton, but we would not have his rights unless he was on the 15 man. With Miller opting in, spots are going to be very hard to come by. There is always the possibility he beats out Deli in camp. We are also going to get a vet pg in free agency. Kid is going to have to ball out to make the 15.

The Cavaliers have done partially guaranteed deals for years most of the players don't join the actual 15 man roster for more than a week or two and mostly play D League ball. Dellavedova wasn't originally supposed to make the roster to stay in 2013 but he kept out playing the fully guaranteed guys ahead of him.

I think the partially guarantee is there way of making him happy when they cut him at the end of camp and make him a preferred draft pick for Canton. I don't think there is any chance he makes the team, but clearly he is a guy they like, want to keep a close eye on, and get coached in their system down in Canton.

Well, if someone over pays for Deli and he leaves then maybe he could be the third pg, but yes he is a long shot. Bottom line is we need to have 3 pg's on the roster imo given irving is coming off a major injury.

This guy seems interesting. Super fast,

I agree with the 3 Point Guard Theory as well and suspect the FO does too. Even with Delly playing well we still could have used someone to spread the ballhandling minutes out with Kyrie out. I don't think we'll let that happen again.

Oh, I agree that we need with PGs, but I think a vet makes more sense.

NBA teams can have up to 20 players on contracts during the summer. They have to cut down to 15 near the end of training camp. So, this contract keeps him committed to playing for the Cavs until they decide whether or not to keep him or cut him. As others have mentioned, one typical path would be for the Cavs to keep him until late and then hope he sticks around after being cut by playing for Canton.

Watching this kids highlights, you have yourself an ELITE athlete. Of course, his struggles will end up being can he play enough PG consistently to not be considered a vastly under-sized shooting guard. I like kicking the tires on someone like this. I think NBA players should be a unique skill which helps them and he certainly is in possession of that.

From some of the shootarounds I've seen him in, I don't know if that "J" is as smooth as it needs to be. Seems to run pretty hot and cold ala' Dion.

Some advanced stats/draft projection models sort of like him. By "sort of like him," I mean they thought he was draftable. Hard for me to see this in his stat line, especially the fact his senior year was worse than his junior year.

Interesting that a highly athletic PG was liked by some stat models, since they tend to favor PGs who don't turn the ball over and are low usage and high efficiency (like Kevin Pangos). Some models are a bit different, of course, and some include athletic measures, such as Layne Vashro's.

New to the forums here. Wanted to say that the Cavs are getting a diamond in the rough with Sykes, coming from someone who watched him for his entire collegiate career at UW-Green Bay. His junior year stats look better because Green Bay also had 7'0 Alec Brown, who was drafted by the Suns in the 2014 draft. Brown was able to hit the long range as well as draw defenders off of Sykes creating better opportunities. His senior year saw defenses focusing on him alone with a lack of depth on Green Bay's roster. Even if he doesn't make the Cavs roster and stays with Canton, he'll be a highlight reel player that will need to be watched.
