If I understand this all correctly, and I know people have said it isn't possible unless we can stay under the apron, but we might be a legitimate S&T threat next off season. People are just saying Bogans, and Haywood for x, but realistically it would include Dion, likely our draft pick, and possibly the Memphis pick. That might not be enough to keep us under the apron, but I am sure it would be pretty close. We have to be talking something like 22 or 23 million outgoing for 17 or 18 incoming.

If we could just sell one guy on a guaranteed title, then we are looking good. What would Gasol's max even be?

Then there is the issue of Tristan. How much will we be paying him. Will he give us enough room for a max player?

The most likely scenario is obviously a trade for a guy under contract, but I don't think we can completely rule out the possibility that we could S&T.

Haywoods contract by itself can get us a contract as high as 14 million next summer by itself. Add in another player(Harris or Delly or a non guaranteed guy we sign late in the year like we did w Hopson and you can get even higher for the right star). So we can still get the majority of any players who would be available to us next summer via trade for Haywood straight up.

Like Lowe said, this ensures we can sign someone like Allen this year(or someone else who gets bought out in the second half) without ending up over the luxury tax. The TPE can be used at any time starting now all the way to next year at this time. So while it end the idea of combining Bogans and Haywood next summer, it's in line with what some where talking about yesterday in adding 2-3 quality depth guys over the next 12 months.

ZaZa could probably be gotten at any time. Once Dec./Jan rolls around and teams begin to realize they will not likely make the playoffs, a whole new subset of players will become available. Like a Mozgov perhaps or others. By trading Bogans, we can also retain the value of his contract for trade via the trade exception while not wasting a roster spot on someone they had zero intention on receiving a minute of playing time.

You know what that means.

The difference between a $3.183 mill MLE and a $5.15 mil MLE.

Not sure about that. Doesn't using the full MLE next summer automatically lock us into the hard capped year at the luxury tax apron? Which seems unlikely as we'll have Kyrie first year of his extension kick in, likely a new deal fro Tristan, built in raises on a few other contracts, plus the amount of whoever we end up trading for with the TPE we just got for Bogans.

This is more likely to just ensure that we don't become a luxury tax team this year, so that when we go over next year, the first year we would potentially pay the repeater tax would be following the 2016-2017 season. Though that happens to be the first season of the expected massive salary cap bump, which could potentially take us down under the tax in year three of this team and thus avoid the repeater tax entirely. Its also the offseason the new CBA will be redon. so who knows how that will affect things.

This might also show that the Haywood and Bogans contracts were earmarked for for 2-3 mid level players and not another max contract addition. I'm assuming Cavs would get the 2nd rounder from Philly. Actually I believe Sixers are below the salary floor so Bogans contract helps them add salary without it being guaranteed. Cavs now have a tpe without having to sacrifice a roster spot for Bogans. Celtic fans were saying Bogans was a distraction for them last season and had to be sent home..Cavs don't need that kind of nonsense.

As already mentioned this should keep the Cavs under the lux tax. Gilbert would have no problems paying tax but being a tax team does limit future possibilities in terms of available exceptions.

It's nice to not worry about tax payments. To avoid it this year and possibly only pay the repeater tax 2 seasons from now before the CBA expires is awesome.

Disadvantages: We lose the combined value of Haywood and Bogans

And if that is the only disadvantage, then it is all good because that really isn't even a disadvantage to me. Because if I remember correctly, we can trade Haywoods contract alone up to 15 mil. If not, you would have to figure that we would be combining a player or two (Tristan or Dion?) with him anyway so we will have more than enough salary to match anyone big. Somehow I doubt Haywood and Bogans would be a big enough return for any team to consider trading away a near star quality player.

edit- Oh, I just saw MirORich say basically the exact same thing except better :p

I hope Allen doesn't see this and insist on signing for more than the minimum.

Oh you're right, I forgot this exception can only be used for trades. Carry on.

Someone check my quick calculations here:
Cavs team salary with Bogans gone = $72,436,961
Luxury tax threshold = $76,829,000

So we can acquire $4,392,039 back in a trade using the trade exception without going over the tax line. Even less if we sign Ray Allen.

So trading for Zaza or Mozgov can't happen unless we dump someone like Amundson / Delly / Harris in a separate deal.

Seems like we're more in Mahinmi / Biyombo / Dalembert territory if we want another center.

They may be willing to go into the tax but ONLY for the right player. So the TPE instead of Bogans allowed them to free up a roster spot for someone who might actually play or be used in another deal later?

The luxury tax paying teams are not calculated and billed until the end of their season. Its one of the reasons you see some weird seemingly talent unrelated trades every year at the trade deadline. Teams who are just slightly above the tax threshold will trade an end of the bench roleplayer with a gauranteed contract for a 2nd round pick so they can dip below the tax line.

Also, and this might be the most important question for us, but can a draft pick be included with a TPE in a deal? While we might be able to get someone like ZaZa straight up for the TPE, if we're going to get Mozgoz later in the year, a sweetener in the form of a draft pick will need to be inlcuded.
