None of that matters. The best player doesn't always win MVP...and Kyrie has the two highest scoring games this season. To claim it's impossible for him to win MVP seems foolish to me.
Now did I say it's impossible? If I did, I apologize, but in my post, I said "I can't imagine any scenario…," which just means that I have a very hard time seeing Kyrie win it over Lebron. Look at the Finals MVPs of the past 25 years:

2014: Kawhi Leonard
2013: Lebron James
2012: Lebron James
2011: Dirk Nowitzki
2010: Kobe Bryant
2009: Kobe Bryant
2008: Paul Pierce
2007: Tony Parker
2006: Dwyane Wade
2005: Tim Duncan
2004: Chauncey Billups
2003: Tim Duncan
2002: Shaquille O'Neal
2001: Shaquille O'Neal
2000: Shaquille O'Neal
1999: Tim Duncan
1998: Michael Jordan
1997: Michael Jordan
1996: Michael Jordan
1995: Hakeem Olajuwon
1994: Hakeem Olajuwon
1993: Michael Jordan
1992: Michael Jordan
1991: Michael Jordan
1990: Isiah Thomas

I would argue that in each of those years, besides 2007 (where Parker won it, but Duncan was probably better), the best player on the team won the award each year. Now, you could argue that Parker or Duncan was better than Kawhi last year (which I don't agree with, but I see why you could say that), but even if you include Kawhi as one of the exceptions, that means a player who wasn't the best player on the team has won the FMVP 2/25 times. That's 8% of all the Finals MVPs won. And not all those teams were fortunate enough to have the best player in the game. Having the best player further reduces the odds that the second best player outperforms a player who is universally regarded as the best player on the planet, and in this case, one who has been to the past 4 NBA Finals and won 2 Finals MVPs, compared to a player with no playoff experience.

Yes, there's a chance that Kyrie wins it over Lebron. However, in my opinion, Lebron is almost guaranteed to win it if we win the championship this year, meaning I think Kyrie's chances of winning it are very slim in comparison.

Do we want Boston to win this game; re:standings?

If Spurs can't be caught, maybe it's best not to win?
I talked about this in the Playoff Positioning thread, but I really wouldn't mind if we dropped these next 2 games, and basically secured an easy first round matchup with Boston. We have the second seed locked up and I don't see us catching the Spurs to get home court advantage against them in a potential Finals series - they have the tiebreaker against us, so essentially we're 2 games behind with only 4 games left - so I think it would be very beneficial if we let Boston win against us, as crazy as it sounds.

I totally agree with you.

I love that we’re already talking about who’s going to win Finals MVP on this team. We really have our priorities straight as a fanbase :chuckle:

It's better than talking about who we're going to take with the number one pick this time of year, isn't it? :chuckle:

I could see Kyrie getting finals MVP. If Kawhi slowed Lebron down enough and Kyrie hits a couple of tough shots and slices up their defense. It might not be unreasonable.

Over the years, for just about any big stage, whether it be for FIBA/Team USA tryouts/Select Team/Exhibition Games/All-star events/Nationally televised games/4th quarters/buzzer beaters, Kyrie has generally stepped up to the moment. His 4th quarter stats have been near the top of the league since he came into it. He just goes to another level whenever he is on such a stage. I think the playoffs will bring the best out of him.

I expect to see FIBA-Kyrie-esque play, but better. Great defense with active, sneaky hands, great passing and playmaking, and a level of skill and ability in scoring that has rarely been seen in the NBA. I am waiting to see some crazy stuff come from the young blood.

Shaq was better than Wade the year Wade won finals MVP. Is it clear Billups was the best Piston (Wallace)? Or Pierce the best celtic (KG)?

While it's unlikely, Kyrie certainly is an explosive enough scorer he could win MVP if we win the championship, especially if the other team goes all out to contain LeBron. I'd give him a less than 10% chance, perhaps less than 5%.

I disagree on Shaq being better than Wade. I think Wade was definitely better than him in '06. I could see an argument for Billups or KG, though.

The odds you gave for Kyrie winning the MVP are accurate in my eyes. But more importantly, guys, what do we think the odds are for Delly winning it?

Basically if Kyrie had replicated that game against the Spurs in Game 7 of the Finals, then yes, he would be the MVP. Otherwise, the safe bet is on LeBron.

Seems really dumb to play Kyrie tonight. Cavs should rest him for the remainder of the season.

He’s not old, and it seems like a long time since he last played anyway. Just play him 25 minutes or so. You don't want him to get rusty.
