INDEPENDENCE: LeBron James said that every NBA Finals series loss gets harder to get over. Physically, emotionally they take a toll on him. On Monday, the 30 year-old, 13-year veteran joked with the media horde assembled at Cleveland Clinic Courts that he really could have used another couple of months off.

James and his teammates will begin the quest to win a championship on Tuesday, as the Cavaliers open training camp.“One thing we can build off of last year is the chemistry we had, but we can’t build off the success as far as wins and losses,” James said. “It’s a whole new year.” LeBron also said that the goal will be the same. “The main thing is still the main thing, and that is to win a championship.” That starts, according to LeBron, by building championship habits every day- on and off the court.

Camp will begin with several players still recovering from injuries. Kyrie Irving is coming back from knee surgery, and not expected to be ready when the season opens October 27th in Chicago. Kevin Love says his shoulder is fine, but for now he will wear a pad on the shoulder he dislocated during Cleveland’s opening round series against the Boston Celtics. Love said on Monday that everything is cool between him and Kelly Olynyk, who was the Celtic that pulled his arm and caused the injury. The pad will help absorb contact and protect the shoulder.

Anderson Varejao is coming back from surgery on his Achilles tendon and will certainly be taking things slowly to build his strength and stamina back. Timofey Mozgov also had surgery on his knee in the off-season, but expects to be ready to go for the opener.

Head coach David Blatt said that the Cavaliers were going to be smart about players returning from injury, that they feel the team has the depth to win games while players work themselves back into condition. He mentioned new players like Richard Jefferson and Sasha Kaun who can give the team productive minutes.

The buzz around the team right now might be more about who is missing than who is present. Tristan Thompson was not in the building with the rest of his teammates, as he and the Cavaliers are still not on the same page regarding a contract extension. At the very least, Thompson is expected to sign his qualifying offer meaning he would become a free agent at the end of the season. Everyone expects Tristan to be playing for the Cavaliers in 2015-2016, but what happens after is a mystery.
