I'm tired of hearing how our wins are getting us a worse player.

Yes, talent can be found throughout the draft. No one denies that. But the probability of getting better talent skyrockets the closet you get to pick 1. Cherry picking guys outside of the top 8 over the last 16 years makes an impressive list, but not nearly as making a list of the players taken in the top 5 over that same stretch.

Whether the Cavs pick at 8 or 10, they're still picking from a lower tier of players that will be passed over by 7-9 other teams. Neither scenario is particularly exciting.

winning is exciting. seeing the team improve is exciting. seeing the player starting to buy in is exciting. I really don't get how it would be better for the team to have the players on our roster be worse than they are and to not show the improvement they are showing.

which is irrelevant since they were not going to be picking in the top 3-5 this year, despite their best tanking efforts.

I had a long post in the draft thread a few weeks ago.
Statistically teams who have drafted in the 6-10 range have been just as successful finding an all star as those teams that drafted 2-5. Your odds of finding an impact player drop dramatically after the top 10. The odds go up substantially for any team that lucks into the #1 pick.
Personally wouldn't be surprised if one or two of the foreign prospects or even someone like Gary Harris, Kyle Anderson, Lavine, etc turn out to be better pros than some of the big names mocked in the top 6-7.

all these meaningless wins are doing nothing but having the cavs pick around #10 instead of #8. the horror of failing to tank......

:chuckles: Picking #10 instead of #8 is such a terrible tragedy...

Strawman fallacy.

I never suggested that the Cavs should have picked in the top 3-5. What I said is that neither (draft) scenario is exciting. The person who responded that "winning is exciting" provided a much better counterargument.

So you are still saying there is a 20% better shot at an all star picking if picks 2-5 (4 picks) yield the same amount of allstars as picks 6-10 (5 picks). I not trying to be contrary, I just believe in going with the odds. I will admit I'm a little surprised that 6-10 have such a good percentage. I'm curious how it falls with all star starters and multi year all stars.

I'm fine with getting a mediocre pick if we can keep Deng and Hawes...if we can't keep those guys, then the pick becomes important. i have a feeling we'll lose one or both of them and the cavs will be back to a bottom 6 team. that was the risk of trying to "win now" and going after 1-year rental players. it's great if it works and you make the playoffs...if it doesn't work and those guys leave, you're back to square one. it looks like it will be the latter and the Deng and Hawes trades will be pointless in the end.

based on? some people are so damn negative...Deng has been rumored he was going to leave but that was before the Cavs have hit their stride and Hawes most likely will stay

Wait what pick did we get Irving with? Oh that's right it was number 8 going into the lottery.

Aren't you guys tired of this frankly stupid argument?

Chances are better that with a higher draft pick you will get a better player.

Odds are that with a worse record you will get a higher draft pick.

Some GM's are stupid. Hopefully our GM is not stupid.

Even non-stupid GM's can make stupid picks sometimes.

Literally all that needs to be said on this topic.

I'm also pretty sure Stern played with the ping pong balls to repay us for LeBron kicking us in the nuts.

He has to monkey with them as long as we are in the lottery. That was the deal. We get a top 3 if we are in the lottery this year. It is his only responsibility now that he has retired.

i just seen Deng and Hawes leaving for greener pastures. Deng is late in his career and will probably want to jump to a contender before he retires. Hawes we might be able to keep, but I don't see us keeping them both. just seems too good to be true.
