Looking for a new laptop

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thanks for the response, very helpful.

There's actually an open box XPS 9560 on bestbuy.com right now for $1495 that I might pull the trigger on. Any good reason not to? Maybe a deal on Amazon Prime Day in a few weeks?

Is the 9560 the 4K model?

The 4K's color accuracy and brightest is off the charts... It's an AMAZING screen to look at.

However, the 9570 is 6-core Coffee Lake and there is a $1495 version of it brand new; but it's not 4K.

Some people prefer the 1080p version, especially if you're gaming... But that 4K screen is beautiful.

You should go take a look at the XPS 15 4K vs FHD in a store to see the difference. If you don't care about the difference at all, get the 1080p since you'll have more battery life.

If you buy an open box from Best Buy, you may encounter "Darrin DeYoung" He's annoying, but not too hard to expel.

I ended up deciding to sleep on it and it’s no longer as an open box, so I guess that decision was made for me.

I’ve been looking at the huawei matebook x pro in addition to the XPS 15 and the MSI stealth. I’m not a big pc gamer anymore so I’m not sure I want to spend the extra on the msi, but that does look like a very nice laptop.

I think I’ve started to prioritize screen quality and build/feel over gaming ability, so the weaker graphics card in the huawei doesn’t bother me so much.

Do you want 4K with very bright accurate color, but at 60hz (with some noticeable ghosting) or ... 144hz butter smooth panel, but 1080p, and not so bright or accurate -- just, insanely smooth desktop/gaming experience?

Going to bump this thread. I'm starting law school in a few weeks and am looking for recommendations. The only purpose of this computer will be to research and use Microsoft Office for papers and briefs. Not looking to spend a ton. All help is appreciated.

Probably doesnt help but I got my laptop from Walmart from a discount table for $250, originally $500, was a holiday return. 17', used for same thing as you, docs and websurfing; only thing that has broken was the cooling fan and I fixed that easy. Not sure if its an option but hit up local retailers thud time of year and look for that table.

A $250 laptop? I’ve seen homeless guys using more expensive laptops as toilets.

Refurbished by the manufacturer units are usually 25% cheaper, or more, and have full warranties.

If you go low budget, use a cloud backup.. I did the surface book pro, because I lost two laptops to ms updates (hp and dell). I figured one throat to choke.. fourth year no troubles.. a regular surface might be ok as well since you are not doing heavy lifting.. but law school you will be typing so keyboard is critical

Used MacBook Pro with Retina display. Any model that's at least the Late 2013 and up. You can buy a 13" used for ~$500 on Craigslist typically.

Bumping because my laptop is hanging on by a thread. I have a Dell Latitude e6420. Basically I just want to use it for surfing the internet but it can barely handle that at this point.

I guess I'm looking in the 200-300 dollar price range but I'd be willing to go up or down depending on the value. In the future, I kind of would like to mess around with creative programs like music production or graphic design sort of things but I would need the time to learn it. So I'm open but I prefer the cheaper value route.

Is it handing on by a thread because it's beat up or just slow? If it's just slow, you could upgrade to a SSD hard drive and upgrade the RAM to it max which it looks like is 8gb.

It says 4 gb of RAM in my system properties so it could upgrade. I might have an older one? I'm still on Windows 7. Something is weird with the batteries and charging so for the last year or so I don't even use a battery. I just plug it in the charger and it's the only way it turns on and stays on.

I think the hard drive says 300 gb capacity but it's been "full" for months. I've cleared everything off the computer and it always says it's full. I figured it must be something with internet memory because I only use the internet. But I've cleared cache and wiped history and it does nothing. I've researched it and haven't found an answer although I feel there must be one.

So yeah, it runs okay somehow but I can tell it runs slow and stutters when I try to watch streaming. And I have good internet. All of this just makes it a bit annoying to use. I could buy it again refurbished for like 100 but I figure I can get a laptop the runs way better for a bit more when 200-300 is still cheap. I'd possibly go 500+ if the value was there.

All my technology is behind. I could use a new tv too as mine is 10 years old. And I have a crappy phone too which is okay with me. Only problem is that I want to start listening to music and playing basketball, but I need to find a device that can download music (and wireless headphones to use). I see cheap options around that would be big upgrades since I'm so behind. But Black Friday/Cyber Monday is also coming up. So I'm up for recommendations.
