Lottery Reform, Like Winter, is Coming

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hopefully we don't have to worry about the lottery for another 10 plus years

Apparently my powers are so strong that the NBA is now looking to reform the lottery because of me. :chuckles:

I like the idea of more teams benefiting fromt he lottery with drawings for the top 6 picks. heck make it 7 . if the concern is playoff teams tanking to get a lottery shot at 2 %.. then give teams 15-20 a shot at a top 10 to 15 slot.

I just never understood the moaning about tanking in the NBA, yet you rarely hear the bitching about it in the NFL, where tanking is far more beneficial (not just a chance at a better draft spot, but a guarantee).

If Lottery Reform, like Winter, involves White Walkers, I will be crapping my pants...

Agreed, but it's kind of funny that the proposed solution is basically just the exact same system but with different weighting.

I thought the lottery wheel was a fucking terrible idea, though.

Just as long as it isn't that horrible wheel idea. My god what a horrid idea that is.

I actually like the idea of having the top 6 spots be drawn for. Just don't make it so a team that is coming off a title is going to have a top 5 pick in the draft that year. That is horrible.

The funny thing is there is a very, very, VERY easy way to fix it.

But if you implemented that fix, then everyone would cry about how "unfair" it was, because the bottom dwellers wouldn't have such an easy time getting off the floor. Every team in the league, including playoff teams, have the same odds to land every draft spot. A true lottery. Unweighted and involving all of the teams. Would immediately end tanking.

But we can't do that, because god forbid a good team gets a good player via the draft.

So, you know, if you aren't willing to REALLY go the full mile to end tanking, stop whining about it.

76ers fighting lottery changes:

The NBA is pushing toward changes to the draft lottery system by next season but is facing a strong objection from the Philadelphia 76ers, the franchise that could suffer the most from it, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

The rough draft of this plan was met with opposition by 76ers management, which is in the midst of a multiseason rebuilding project that is dependent on a high pick next year. The 76ers, sources said, are hoping to get the NBA to delay the plan's implementation for at least a year because it would act as a de facto punishment while just playing by the rules that have been in place.

The 76ers, however, may struggle to gain support from Silver or fellow teams for holding off on the changes. Philadelphia's planned sink to the bottom has caused a drag on revenues in one of the league's largest markets and has upset some other teams, sources said.

Looks like we got out of the tank (we weren't tanking last year, bad mix of coaching/chemistry/failing to reach expectation) just in time, guys. Poor Philly. I dunno why they want to make tanking as obvious as they make it. There should be more of a subtlety to it!

Personally, I don't care what the NBA does with the lottery system. Has no effect on the Cavs. But as a fan of the NBA, and small market success, I hope they keep it the way it is. It is a proven path to success, and for small markets it is their only hope for title contention. After seeing the Cavs reap the benefits of a multi-year tank, I hope other small markets follow suit.

The problem is their fixes are only half measures, and it doesn't actually stop tanking. You're still awarding odds based on record, which btw is better than the NFL system where tanking is just flat out way more beneficial.

But still, your chances increase the more you suck. Reducing those chances slightly still doesn't get rid of the incentive. Like I said, you REALLY want to end tanking you put every single team into the lottery and give them all even odds.

They seriously should implement a rule that you can't have a top 3 pick of your own two years in a row. Probably stop a fair bit of the bitching.

I think that would just encourage a different kind of tanking. If you're a seventh or eighth seed who has no shot at an upset, isn't it better to lose a few games and roll the dice in the lottery when everyone has even odds? That system really just screws teams that are legitimately bad.

Seems kind of stupid to build a system designed around luck and then punish the teams that get lucky. :chuckles:
