Luka Doncic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
But he is sloowww and unathletic :).

It is amazing to see that Euros, no matter how good, skilled and succint they are, are subject to different evaluation standards
. There is a huge group of people who see a lot of potential in chuckers with no basketball iq, no understanding of the game and full of confidence. And I guess this includes some GMs and coaches as well.

Are you serious with this?

This is a league that drafted Darko #2, Bargnani #1, Gallanari #6, Kanter #3, JV #5, Vesely #6, Porzingis #4, Hezonja #5
Not a lot of bias to show here particularly with how many duds some of these guys turned out to be

I am serious. I was talking about fan-poster bias mainly. I was thinking about this when reading posts defending Lue's not playing Zizic and Cedi(last year). It comes up in many different ways. And now with Doncic. There is no need to go into detail here because it is not a fruitful discussion but that's my impression.

There are of course a lot of Euro busts. And there are many many more US busts. The sample size for Euros is very small, so not very meaningful. But I think the success ratio(need to define it of course) is comparable.

IMO the issue is that most top Euro prospects have very short track records (or no track records at all) in the top European leagues. Vesely, Bargnani, Hezonja and Gallinari logged 405, 381, 364, and 384 minutes respectively in their final Euroleague seasons prior to being drafted. Valanciunas and Porzingis logged 373 and 335 minutes respectively at the lower Eurocup level. Milicic and Kanter were complete unknowns. Those are much smaller sample sizes than we typically get for college prospects, even one-and-done guys...so it's no wonder front offices can't reliably evaluate them.

Doncic, in contrast, played 856 Euroleague minutes last year. All told, he accumulated about 4,400 professional minutes by draft day, an enormous sample size and far more than any player his age in basketball history. There's no reason to doubt that he's the real deal.

He has phenomenal hands. Very quick, very sure. That's a big part of what made Bird so successful.

Yes! Quick hands is actually such an underrated trait. Arvydas Sabonis had really quick hands for a guy his size. I remember watching a video where he came in to the Lithuanian national team's practice at age 47 and was intercepting passes left and right from NBA level players at the time (Valanciunas, Kleiza, Songaila).

Kid just torched a Western Conference playoff team. Granted, they didn't have Butler, but it's still pretty impressive for a 19 year old. Looked better in his 2nd game than Wiggins in his 5th year.

Must be nice for Dallas fans to have him too look forward to for every home game. I bet Mark Cuban has a constant tent in his pants watching him. I hate his number though, just doesnt look right.

Doncic was number 7 on Real Madrid, but Dwight Powell has that number on the Mavs.

Oh, ok. Makes perfect sense. Darn Dwight, 7 would look so much better.

This kid dribbles too much. I do like his game, don't get me wrong, but he waste a lot of time pounding the ball. It's interesting that the Mavs have already given him the keys to the offense, must have a lot of faith in him. They pretty much let him go and do whatever he wants. Stark contrast to how the Cavs are handling Collin Sexton.

Doncic should handle the ball way more. Should be the primary ball handler. Actually, they are giving the ball way too much to DSJ.

Luka is a better and much more ready player than Sexton, so the comparison doesn't quite fit.

Agree Doncic is lightyears better than Sexton, but playing Doncic off the ball isn't as egregious to me because he's actually a pretty decent off-ball player. Sexton on the other hand is one of the worst off-ball players in the entire NBA. He's not a great shooter to begin with, he doesn't have a clue how to get open, and he's not quite big or athletic enough to be a threat on cuts to the basket. Tack on his bad defense, and it's a complete recipe for disaster.
