Luol Deng

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Deng is the premier defensive stopper at the SF position, look how he did against Durant the other night. Having Deng is no small matter when the league's top teams all feature offensively gifted SFs whether Lebron, Paul George or Durant. And for those dumping on his offense, he still looks great to me. He has a good jump shot, he is crafty around the basket and he is a good passer. He hasn't forced the offense as much since we've had Hawes. And since we've had Deng all we've done is won, whether the 6 game win streak or defeating OKC on the road. I'm not sure where the negativity on Deng is coming from.

You could compare Deng to Kendrick Perkins. Unloved, but when you get in a series against dwight howard, you are happy to have him. when we go up against Indiana, and Granger, and Turner get shut down all will know Deng's inpact on the game.

Classic oasis right there. He's on a roll tonight :chuckles:

I no longer have ESPN Insider, but a few days ago Amin Elhassan wrote an article on what the 2014 free agents should get paid this year. He says Deng is worth 3 years/$22.5 million. Again, I have not read the actual article, so I am not sure if he is using PER or some other metric as the basis for determining "value," or "contribution to winning." Obviously, he does factor in age and injury history.

I think that is pretty accurate. Deng is not what he was but he still has a lot of value around the league. My hope is he doesn't get any big offers, so we can sign him and another player. He's not the 20 point and elite defense player anymore that could get 14 million anymore. We'd be overpaying. But he's still an elite defender, and has a lot of veteran move that can still get him to 15 points.

Yeah 22.5 for 3 years would be perfect. It shows respect tp deng but isn't a mass overpay

22.5 might be what he should get paid... But he will get 30 at the very least...

It will be interesting to see what he gets. Some team could throw a lot of money his way. I hope it's not us. But sadly if we want him, we gotta over pay. What about if we give him a David west deal? Big money for two years or whatever

This is around the ballpark I would consider him at. I wouldn't give Deng anything more than 3 years and no more than $28 million. He's obviously not a fit on this team with Mike Brown. He's not a 1 on 1 player and he's not a good 3 point shooter. He's not good in the pick and roll and that's all this offense does. On top of that, I'm not sure how much longer he can continue playing at a high level. He is only 28 but he looks older than he plays with his movements and I could see him deteriorating quickly. Still disappointed we couldn't get anything valuable for him at the deadline...

That shows respect to Deng? You're kidding, right? Him and his agent were insulted by Chicago's 3 year 30 million dollar extension offer. Josh Smith just got 56 million over 4 years, Deng is easily going to get 12-14 million a year.

Let him walk for that. Miami can have him when Lebron leaves.

Not all that interested in bringing this guy back. Get me a better outside shooter at SF who plays decent defense.

If he signed on cheap, sure. But I'm not committing big money to this Luol Deng. He's only going to get worse from here. He's not a vocal leader, his game is off (whether that's due to injury or not doesn't matter...he's getting older and has plenty of injuries on his horizon), he's a very mediocre outside shooter...the pros (defense, professionalism, passing) don't outweigh the cons to me for what he wants to get paid.

I was all onboard in resigning him after the trade, but now I'd rather give Trevor Ariza a multi-year contract over Deng for all those reasons above. Thibs didn't do him any favors burning him out the past few years.

How can Chicago be better after they traded him? Makes know sense at all. He was having his best year of his career

Serious question... Why the hell would we overpay Deng to come back? He's already having injury problems and he's not getting any younger. Deng has done nothing special at all with us, besides his defense being above par. We could go out and sign a guy for 5 million a year who can make shots and play decent defense, rather than having Deng who can't shoot and is an above average defender making 10 million. No way he deserves what he's going to get in free agency. I hope we are not that team that overpays him.

I think that would be ideal.

We just aren't going to get anyone comparable to him in the Draft or FA.
