MAC Football 2014

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I guess that explains the text I got from my buddy saying he'd gotten a growler of Pumking. I was wondering where the hell he got that in Bowling Green. Figured he drove to Toledo or something. :chuckles:

None of those changes seem all that major, though. SkyBar sucked once you were 21 unless you were trolling for freshman tail. I never went to Ziggy's much, either. We did most of our drinking at Downtown, occasional weeknight trips to Trotters (we knew the bartenders and always got cheap drinks), and City Tap once it opened.

To be honest, just sounds like the typical bar/restaurant turnover you see in any town. You have to have a really good business plan and smart management to keep business humming, and most places don't have that. Plus, times change. A craft beer store wouldn't have been successful ten years ago in Bowling Green, just like City Tap probably wouldn't have had much appeal. Five years later and the game changed, and then today craft beer is bigger than ever.

I've lived in Charlotte for three years and seen the following open in my neighborhood: a bottle/growler shop where you can also hang out and drink, two breweries (one opens next month, but close enough), and several bars that serve primarily craft beer. And that was in a city that was already pretty craft beer savvy.

Oh absolutely... I get that changes happen. I only said it's depressing because even though I only graduated 4 years ago, with all those changes (albeit most are minor) that have taken place... it kind of kills the nostalgic feel a little bit when I go back there. SkyBar did suck after 21, but it was decent in the spring and fall once they opened the outdoor tiki bar in the back. Ziggy's was a place I frequented alot back in my time there along with 149, Beckett's, and then eventually City Tap.

I wish I had the craft beer options when I was in school that these kids do now. It wasn't until after I turned 21 and had my choice over what I drank that I started experimenting with trying new shit. Before 21 it was being at someone else's will, and that usually meant going in on a case of Natty, Keystone, Bud, Coors, or any of those other usual suspects.

Also, I used to work in the athletic department when I was there, so I'm just a little bitter that the Stroh Center opened up the year after I graudated. I used to have to spend all that time at that dump Anderson Arena.

do any other MAC teams start the season Thursday?

Good BG talk - graduated from there in '98. Spots was some greatness. Went back in the early 2000s and was disappointed in the amount of meat they put on a regular. They went to the "double meat" method - and didn't realize it.

Akron's defense looked strong, but granted it was Howard. But they got in the backfield, they got pressure and made the QB move around get uncomfortable.

Offense doesn't have that top flight go to WR, but Smith is strong and Pohl looked way better than last year. OL cannot run block, so they are going to have to depend on Pohl keeping drives alive.

I think they should be able to compete with Penn St, it will really come down to the offense being able to stay on the field.

respectable analysis. I expect big things out of the D, specifically the front 7. A go to WR would be HUGE. I like LT Smith's toughness, but don't think he has the talent to be that guy, D'Orazio is good in the slot. I would have liked them to get Bickley involved more. Less downfield passes and more bubble screens. Get him the ball in space. The X-factor is Mykel Traylor-Bennett. IF he can develop, it would be huge for the Zips this season. I liked what I saw last night to help build his confidence. Drops were an issue for his as a true frosh last season, The talent is definitely there.

Hopefully Tommy Brown gets his waiver granted, and soon. It would be a huge lift for the O-line.

Sidenote: BG not looking too good against WKU tonight. Is the MAC wide open?

Akron just became a legitimate sleeper pick in the MAC East.

I'm just going to point this out; Our team never, at any point and time, lived and died by the right arm of Matt Johnson, who in all honesty, was only a place holder for Calloway/Knapke/Nicholas (next season) all of which have more arm talent. Offensively, we're still going to score points (admittedly, glad we play VMI this week because back to back Big Ten is going to be rough regardless of who our qb is) because we have arguably the best back in the MAC and our receiving corps is probably our biggest asset as not many MAC corners are going to be physically big enough to hang with Lewis or Dieter, or run with Moore.

The defense just flat sucks if they're gunna play ten yards off every play then yes, Akron jumps us by a mile.

Regardless of how good you do or don't think he is, he was still widely picked as the preseason MAC POTY and led them to a MAC championship blow out win over undefeated NIU. The guy behind him may have a lot of potential, but there is a reason he was not starting.

Johnson also didn't start to begin last year, and has the same amount of time in this system than Knapke.

Can honestly tell you this right now, having watched/been to every game last season; The defense was the reason we won the MAC. He had a wonderful game at Ford Field, but Matt Johnson didn't blank Ohio or completely shut down Buffalo to even give him that shot. He's replaceable, but it doesn't matter if we have no defense because defense wins football games, ESPECIALLY in the MAC. That's why BG has been good two years straight.

I'll have to find the article, because I haven't, but a few things floating around campus this morning was a PD writer called BG a cupcake win for Akron on the road, and that Akron would probably go into bowl season as a one loss team in the MAC.

Uh, no. Us losing our QB is a hard pill to swallow, sure. But we didn't lose any offensive weapons. We still have the best back. We still have three receivers that I'd honestly say that every MAC team would want.

And even if this is a "wait til next year season", we bring in another HUGE weapon (former five star recruit WR from Baylor) a top 25 pro-qb (three star recruit from Texas Tech) and an SEC Defensive end that transferred from Tenn (was the 26th best DE in his class) to a team that will be returning all of our offensive skill position players, and probably Chris Gallon if he even has an ACL at this point. Not many MAC teams can go four wide with starting caliber players.
