Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Leave Speights on the bench. I do not want to risk hindering what Thompson is doing by pairing him with someone else. Speights is perfect for the role he played tonight.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Agreed, Speights is the perfect 3rd big you bring in off the bench and give you some very effective minutes. Average about 28 minutes a game and be very effective rebounding and scoring down low.

Now if Speights hits that jumper with consistency, then I would consider starting him.

Sleights can play with Thompson. They are compatible

Dat Girth :chuckles:

Whether he starts or not... It's gonna be great to have some of the load off of Zellers shoulders. He's been pretty much 35+ minutes since Andy went down. I can't talk down about the kid , Even with the frame and rookie he's been taking a beating down there. I'm sure he'll even be relieved to get some help

Speights reminds me of the basketball version of Mike Tyson. He's not much for words but man can he play.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

He and Samardo would have been really good friends.

Speights has consistently hit the 16-23 foot jumper at about 44% for his career (low of 41%, high of 47%). He'd probably do a better job spacing the floor than Zeller at this point in their careers.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

If the bench keeps playing the way they did tonight, keep the same lineup in tact.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

He seems really really happy to be in Cleveland. Maybe he can turn his career and rep around like Zach Randoloph. I know odds are good he ends up being more like Cj miles, but he has the talent and seemed to play smart tonight after his confusion in the first half. If they keep him and AV, we actually have a really good rotation of shooting/physical big men with the potential to be really good defensively. If Speights could be that big body that can score in the post, wow. Not getting to high off one game, but it seems like the best case scenario could be fantastic.

Speights is a nice player, but I don't know how much he'll figure into our long-term plans. After the 2013-2014 season he'll be a free agent, and will probably command more money than we'll be willing to pay.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

I was at the game and was surprised at how much Speights was talking on defense, something that was also mentioned in the post-game interviews. He was calling out screens and switches and taking charge in general on the defensive end. Really had has head in the game. I remember him hitting 15-foot jumpers against the Cavs in games vs. Memphis but didn't remember him as being much of a defensive presence. People commenting on his interviewing skills (or lack thereof) are missing out on his communication that meant something on the court tonight.

I should say that I'm talking specifically about the 2nd half. It was clear that Speights got confused and didn't know what the hell was going on exactly in the first half. His 2nd half stint was much sharper on both ends.

I don't know whether he'll be part of the Cavs plans but it would be fantastic if some of that vocal on-court leadership rubbed off on Tristan and Zeller. It's something that was entirely missing from the first unit tonight. They did communicate at times, mainly to say "I thought you had Ilyasova".

Memphis has been one of the best defensive teams the last two years. That sort of team dynamic makes it an emphasis in practice. Wellingtons defensive numbers are even better than Mo's. If these guys can bring that attitude into our locker room, we will get better. In fact if you look at tonights game, firsrt quarter and fourth quarter we unsually strong defensive perfromances for us, against a team that is offensively talented. I think it is our defensive numbers that will indicate when we are ready to push for the playoffs.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

I don't think I ever realized how big he is. He really is a presence down in paint. You can tell he brought a little more swagger to the Cavs players. He played well tonight. The bigger question will be if he can stay focused and work to continue to refine his game. If he continues to improve, suddenly you have a very solid big man rotation going into next year with Thompson, Zeller, Speights, and Varejao.

It looks like he will be traded in the next month

Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant has been tracking Marreese Speights since the big man was playing at Florida. And Cleveland could certainly use a boost on the front line after announcing this week that Anderson Varejao would be lost for the season after his recent leg surgery left the Brazilian with a blood clot in his right lung.

All that said ...

Don't be shocked if the Cavaliers decide to move Speights on again before the Feb. 21 deadline.

The Cavs obviously aren't in the playoff hunt and word is they're already receiving interest in Speights, who possesses a $4.5 million player option for next season. The Cavs are also armed with $12 million in expiring contracts and roughly $4 million in leftover cap space for the summer, which means they've got the tools to continue to be active before this deadline.

Daniel Gibson and Omri Casspi, according to NBA front-office sources, are the most likely Cavs to be dealt along with Speights, who had to give his consent to be sent to Cleveland as one of the 13 players in the league this season (see Box No. 6 here for the detailed explanation) who had trade-blocking power related to his Bird rights.
