Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I guess I don't understand the hate for Delly or the anger towards Blatt for playing him. For about the umpteenth time, there is no one else. Are you guys watching the other options? James Jones, Mike Miller..do these guys strike you as dudes who should be playing big minutes right now? So you've J.R. Smith to play on one wing and...........well that's it. J.R. Smith. Blatt has to play Delly a lot of minutes by default. He's been more effective than James Jones. He's been better than Mike MIller. And, for the most part, he's been better than Joe Harris. These are the choices right now.

Some of the comments in this thread are clearly not about Delly so much as about the writer expressing frustration. Delly seemed to do a good job in the last game, compared his stats with JR Smith and the relative costs of each. I spoke to a past Australian Olympic BB captain recently and he said that Delly has a lot of intangibles - people love playing with him. The Cavs need him to get teammates playing well together; clearly it worked with DW, lets hope some of it rubs off on JR.

Would love to have Jameer Nelson as our back up point guard. But don't know what Boston would demand for him.

...because if you are frustrated with the Cavaliers backup point guard in a shooting slump, a guy who takes up three times as much cap space for the next two years at 34% from the field and 33% from downtown is clearly going to fix everything.

Nelson has been garbage for over three years. No idea why anyone would want worse players on bigger salaries with no upside. I think its time for some people to find other ways to express frustration other than going on RCF and typing unbearably terrible ideas.

I don't mean to make too much of one game, but tonight was the kind of game where Dellavedova was asked to perform a manageable and limited role, and he did his job. That he hit those two shots was a sight for sore eyes -- and perhaps related to him not being overextended.

Still looked like he was getting abused by Lin but overall a much better showing.

Especially once Shumpert returns, Delly's role will be like tonight 6-8 minutes. If he plays well, maybe he earns a few more on a per game basis.

You can tell where the rotation is headed: 8 guys, Smith, Marion and Tristan as the main guys off the bench. Smith, Marion, and Shumpert will play pretty big minutes to ensure we keep LeBron in the 34-38 range.

Everyone else(Delly, Harris, Miller, Jones, Haywood) will only play in the event of foul trouble and blowouts.

And I like it. Tighten the focus on 8 guys getting used to each other and playing in consistent lineups. If things go well, maybe you throw a bone to Miller and Jones and give them a few minutes now and then.

Yep and I like it to. The rotation is setting up for Shump to come back and then we still have that open roster spot. I can not wait till the days of no Miller, Harris, Or Jones are done for big minutes. I will love them for 5 minutes spurts here and there. Just think if we run with a second unit of assuming we sign Robertson. a Robertson and Smith back court with a T.T and Marion front court. That sounds like an NBA2k second unit.

Delly's impact in the win over the Clippers should not be underestimated. Besides sinking 3's at key times, he completely shutdown Crawford when he came in in the 3rd and raised the defensive energy when LA had begun a decent run.
Nice response to the critics in a nationally televised game. Delly is a real asset when he is playing within his role and Blatt doesn't overplay his hand.

Delly's play during the losing streak is a perfect example of what happened with the rest of the team. When bench players are forced to play big minutes, their efficiency drops. They become overexposed, whether due to size, ability, or whatever else. Delly in a reserve role will be the perfect energy guy off the bench at his position. And if you look at the bench bunch, there are several energy guys, like TT, Delly, and even JR. Guys you can plugin with the starting unit, as you pull out the starters after the first ten minutes or so.

Currently one of the best 3 point shooters in the league by percentage. Tied for 10th out of all guards who have played at least 20 games. Turning the ball over a bit more than last year, but that comes with playing more as well. Even with the added turnovers, his AST/TO rate is still well above average. Getting about 5 more minutes per game than he did last year, so essentially we are getting an extra half quarter from him this year. That's part of the issue with him, just too much playing time. Shumpert should help that out when he comes back and Delly gets to play SG less. Would expect to see him in the 10-15 minute range when we're healthy. That is all a backup PG would get here when we are healthy at the G spots, one of the reasons I am very against wasting the 15th spot on another PG.

The problem with this thinking is the lack of contextual awareness: the context is not in the stats and efficiency is a fickle thing. Delly was asked to step up because the greater talent was injured or unavailable. Thus the normal rotations and relationships are disrupted and the go-to players normally relied upon to do the heavy lifting are not present. If you are a team reliant player this is a bad situation ... if you a Melo-like player it's heaven!

This issue I have with some of the latter ideas in this thread is the amount of vision used. Very few teams can run an 8 man rotation in the regular season and be in good shape when you get to the playoffs. You need to exercise and game-train the bench to some depth so that the main players can get rest in closer games against lesser opposition. The upside is that if/when they are needed come crunch time or playoffs then the 9-12 guys can contribute. If you need evidence of how this works look at the Spurs - another small market team that punches above its weight

I watch the games...I see with my own basketball educated eyes...he is a weakness...he isn't a minutes guy on a title team
