Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think it's a buy low time on both Mills and Splitter. In 2014, the Spurs don't get through the playoffs and beat the Heat without them. They seemed like untouchables moving forward. Then we find out Mills blew out his shoulder right before the finals. Kyrie, Varejao, and Splitter all play in the 2014 FIBA world cup in the summer and seem to be exhausted for most of the NBA regular season this year.

What if it was FIBA's fault these guys didn't have the stamina this year? Obviously with Mills, his shoulder injury was the reason for the down year. But if these guys are finally healthy? Damn.

I like the concept of buying low, particularly on Mills. My worry with Splitter was my recollection (which could be wrong) that he couldn't stay on the floor against the Heat because of pnr's. If that is the case, we take on a bloated contract for a fifth big who will rarely see the floor.

So Delly got the qualifying offer, as expected. Just a waiting game now I guess. I do wonder what our limit is, I wouldn't be surprised if we have at least up to 9m/3yr, unless we have a blockbuster planned. Some folks do have money they might throw at him that we can't match e.g. if portland use their mle (5.5/yr).

Also, I think Pop would be extremely hesitant to get rid of mills. But perhaps he is thinking if they get LA, that solves some small fraction of the timmy retiring worries, and they would take that hit. But they would need to make sure they keep cojo first (3.2M qualifying RFA) given TP is already as brittle as TP. So many ifs for this deal really.

He is not particularly good against the pick and roll as a guy who switches onto a perimeter defender like AV or Tristan. He plays more like Mozgov defensively. He can tangle with opposing centers and you can funnel opponents to him to protect the rim. Plus the more solid bigs, the better. They take the longest to heal in recovery for lower body injuries because they carry so much mass.

Look I think his contract isn't very good, but that is the type of contract the Cavaliers are getting with a Haywood trade. You don't get players without warts when all you have to offer is a salary dump. I do think Splitter is better than what he showed this past year and the Spurs have to sweeten the deal to get it done. Mills would be fair sweetener.

I still think 3 year $9-10 mill is Delly's value...probably all guaranteed. I base this on the fact that I think he is worth around $2-$2.5 for 2015-16 and then the cap goes up 32% for 2016-17 and another 21% in 2017-18...multiplying all that up; adding the circumference of my left index finger; subtracting for the number of beers i needed to drown the game 6 loss...factoring in projected %ftg and 3 point fade away clutch shots he is likely to make...gets me to about $10 mill...honestly, what the fuck do I know

all quiet on the Delly front...what team will make a bid?

Delly will likely start negotiating with teams in the third tier of free agency, after the stars grab max contracts, solid starters wrestle for the money left by teams who wanted a star, and then the group of trusted bench depth scrap for leftovers.

Delly inspiring movies to be made after him, what a crazy year.
