Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People get caught up with saying, "Delly isn't a second point guard on a championship team." Well, he faked it well enough as an Eastern Conference team, didn't he? The Norris Coles, Jarret Jacks and CJ Watsons of the league were sitting at home watching Delly make serious contributions to that run.

Call him a "fourth guard in the rotation" and sign a combo guard who can penetrate. Between 3-4 million a year for Delly is a deal. He can be the top shooting guard off the bench who can also run more Euro-style half court sets (more passing, less dribble penetration) as a point when needed. Somebody will roll the dice at 3 million a season in case he can just be a 3 and D guard.

Seems like some folks have forgotten what he did in the playoffs, and how the coaches and players feel about the guy.

If the reports that LeBron has a major role in Cavs free agency are true, I cannot imagine him being okay with Delly leaving because Gilbert is unwilling to pay him 3 or 4 million a year.

Remeber what LBJ said about the guy in interviews during the playoffs. He's not going anywhere.

LBJ also mentioned that he preferred not having to bring the ball up the court and always initiating the offense when KI was out. Those are 2 things Delly doesn't do as well.

Well, we're not planning on Kyrie being out like that again, so it shouldn't be an issue. But if he is out, that's why we need a third PG.

Delly is sufficiently versatile that there's no way he shouldn't be the 4th guard at worst.

The vet guard they're reportedly looking for is to replace Delly as the backup pg. I'm assuming either JR comes back or they obtain someone that can play sg (and SF) with Hayward's contract. That would make Delly the 5th guard (KI, Shump, vet pg, JR/trade replacement)

Seems reasonable, why only partially guarantee the third year?

Partial guarantees are always good potential trade chips down the road and a little protection in case of injury or underperformance.

So we are making a list of things our bench doesn't do as well as All Pro LeBron James and 3Rd team All Pro Kyrie Irving? If Shumpert or Smith did these things at an average clip, Delly wouldn't have been the "next man up." I know that free agency switches the perspective away from players, but Delly is a solid backup point. The Cavaliers just want another guy who would start for most teams, if the opportunity arises.

I think we SHOULD plan on Kyrie being out, since he's basically never played a full season.

This is all on Gilbert

His ass better do what's right

how is he a good backup pg when his dribbling is below average? he's solid on wide open 3's but every other aspect of an offensive player he's below average. Yes, he's a solid defender. However, the Cavs were looking during the season and now for a backup pg to supplant him. So obviously they themselves don't consider him a solid backup pg. He's an ideal 3rd pg and, in some instances, he can play sg when he can be a 3 and D player.

Delly is a fine back up when the team is at full strength. If you lose a key offensive player to injury, Delly gets exposed because he can not create for himself or others. He is essentially a defensive specialist, but that can be problematic from the PG position.

One of the main concerns this offseason should be to reduce the amount of responsibility on LeBron and Kyrie to carry the offense. A healthy and more comfortable Love will be big, but finding another ball handler that can keep defenses honest is nearly a must.

If you add a point guard, I think you add one with a different dimension than either Kyrie or Delly, such as a tall defender with good handles and a pick and roll skill set.

If only there was a body of work that proves Dellavadova is a good backup point guard.

Oh, there is.

Wait, he was outplayed by the MVP of the league after a few games.

Oh wait, so was James Fucking Harden.

Look, upgrade the third guard if you can, but Delly haters need to realize how realistic the past few pages of his supporters have been. His value couldn't be more clear.

I want to keep Delly, but the "haters" see what I see, lack of ball handling skill which is pretty necessary even for a back up pg.

What we need is a Mo William type not to replace Delly, but to replace an injured Kyrie for the 10-15 games he is guaranteed to miss. Delly is an energy defensive player who fits perfect with our starting rotation off the bench.

The need for a 2nd (or 3rd pg if you want to argue semantics) does not supersede the fact that retaining Delly is important for the dynamic of the team.
