Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why would anyone say a player who is only 23 has reached his ceiling?

How much better is Delly going to get? Is he going to be putting up +50 plus minuses next season? this is likely as good as it gets. His lack of athleticism limits his defensive up side. He needs to work on his shot a little. He has a fine view of the floor. Could become a little more crisp passer, but that could also be due to his lack of length, and playing out of position being defended by bigger players sometimes. In my mind he's a career low usage back up point guard, who can play minutes next to a combo guard. And i'm okay with it. He landed in a very good fit here. But, I think his upside is capped aside from I expect him to get more consistent with his shot.

He's improved visibly over the course of the season already, which combined with his work ethic should be all the evidence you need that he's capable of further progress. And if you're still too hung up on his body, just look at Jarrett Jack, who, at his best, is a bona-fide 6th man of the year candidate in spite of possessing worse physical tools than Delly.

Did you just compare Delly to Jack? My god.. my eyes..

Not in terms of playing style. Just as an example of a player with all-around worse physical tools than Delly who managed to put together a pretty decent career by most standards. I think Delly could easily be better than Jack was in his prime given his maturity and leadership ability.

In my head delly turns out to be our guard equivalent of Mario Elie, aguy who can just step up when called and win ball games for you. Crucial in a playoff run

I see him occupying the role that JJ Barea Held for the Mavs in their championship run. Instant energy off the bench. Bursts of offense with effective defense.

Delly still has plenty of upside. Athleticism won't dictate his success. He has improved every year in college and has surprised just about everyone this year. It is ridiculous to think that a rookie has reached his ceiling already because he can't jump real high. There is still plenty of growth for Delly.

I wouldn't mind looking at him as our backup PG for the future. He's stable as hell, and he would allow us to get out from under Jack if we would want to do that. A PG who keeps the offense flowing, making shots, playing tough defense, determining the tempo of the game and being a leader is all you can really ask out of a backup PG, and Delly does all of those things very well.

11 ppg/6.8 apg/4.3 rpg per 36 on 48.6/52.6/75 shooting for the month of March for Delly while playing above average defense for the PG position.

Thank God we have this guy wrapped up for one more year because resigning him this off-season would have been much more difficult due to how we would be hamstrung with other potential free agent signings. If we go over the cap before the 2015 off-season, it won't be a big deal and we can just sign him outright because I believe we will have his bird rights.

Think of a list of PG's that do not have the athletic skills of MJ but that still had a great career: I'll start with Stockton ... who else?

This is all well & good, but we're not expecting him to be, nor do we need him to be, another John Stockton..
