Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's something that I'm throwing around in my brain lately, and I'm not sure how to answer it myself: How do we compare the value of someone like Dion to someone like Delly?

Comparing plus/minus game to game is probably the best metric you're going to get, but the eye test tells me it's not even close. Delly is much more valuable because he makes guys around him so much better, including Dion.

Delly can start as the 2, be one of the first guys off the bench, or be the guy you insert at any point in the game to change the flow or to clamp down.

They are almost like polar opposites in what they bring to the game: Dion can be explosive or a huge negative out on the court, whereas Delly is almost always a positive but lacks some of the high-level skills that Dion has.

Although Dion hasn't exactly had a sterling reputation around the league this year, Delly is still a relatively unknown commodity (but he's changing that quickly!).

Who is more valuable to the Cavs, and how does that influence our personnel decisions moving toward the trade deadline and into next year?

Simple. Delly's a role player. He knows his role and does it every night.

Dion is a borderline starter who struggles fitting into a role player role.

As for the future, we need more A than B, even if B is nice to have sometimes when all cylinders are clicking.

I agree that he's a role player, but that almost undervalues him.

Role players generally are guys who fulfill specific, limited, skill-based functions on the court. Shooting, defense, rebounding, whatever. "Role player" generally doesn't include guys who add on-court leadership (vet role-players usually add it off-court) to the degree that Delly does. It's usually the stars who set the emotional/mental tone of a team, but having a role-player like Delly do it is really unusual. I'm having a tough time thinking of a comparator.

Delly's the kind of guy that championship contenders lust after.

Yeah, I never meant to underrate him at all by calling him a role player.

And as you sort of alluded to, it's even more amazing that he is doing all that stuff in his second year. Even for guys who play four years in college, that is extremely rare. Most guys like him are just trying to cling to a roster, let alone be of the legitimately most important pieces on a championship contending team.

That's kind of why this is rattling around my brain right now. Seems like Dion would be more valued around the league for the rare talents that he has, but Delly is more valuable for the team in terms of looking toward a championship.

Even if Dion continues to play very well as he has in the past few games, moving him for some size and grit might be better for building a rounded, championship contending team, even if it is a downgrade in talent.

On the other hand, I feel that Delly is someone we really can't afford to let go. He's a bargain guy who does so many little things that create extra possessions and generally makes life difficult for the opposing team. We're kind of long on talent and short on toughness and scrappiness right now.

Needless to say, I love the way he's playing lately. Easy to see why he's a fan favorite.

It doesnt undervalue him. Role players are essential to fill out a roster with 3 alpha's already on it. One of Waiter's biggest issues is he is an alpha too and that just doesnt work well on a balance stand point.

I think Delly could be a Craig Ehlo level player, even if a bit different. Not under valued at all.

Sidenote:

If you put Craig Ehlo in fantasy basketball this year, he'd probably score out as a top 50 player. Really well-rounded.

His best year he put up 13.6ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.6apg, 1.5spg and 1 3ptfg a game on 46%/41.9%/68% numbers.

Boris Diaw type numbers.

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers guards Dion Waiters and Matthew Dellavedova are expected to be released from a New Orleans hospital after becoming sick Friday night.

The Cavs said Waiters and Dellavedova will return to Ohio on Saturday after a night at the Ochsner Medical Center. Waiters played 10 minutes in the first half against the Pelicans before being taken from the arena because of abdominal pain. Tests were negative.

The team said Dellavedova had stomach issues following the game and was admitted to the hospital. The Cavs did not disclose Dellavedova's illness and that he didn't travel until hours after the team had already returned to Cleveland.

Dellavedova played 24 minutes but did not score in the 119-114 loss. He recently returned after missing 15 games with a sprained left knee.

Delly lost seven pounds in the last two days - per Blatt earlier today.

He'll gain it back fast. Probably lost a lot of water weight.

I'm worried about Delly: he is always going to fight but against NBA level talent he doesn't look like he has the athletic ability to stay with guards or contest despite having a great motor.

Lol! this again. He's not a superstar, has no ambitions to be such I suspect. He will give you all he's got and he's a great team player who motivates and drives others to better. If your knowledge is based on numbers on a stat line then he will never look good. For the money, heck for twice or even three times the money he is a bargain.

He's missing[parsehtml]<strike>some</strike>[/parsehtml]a lot of wide open 3 pointers. I think he gives you so much in terms of motor and IQ you have to play him but it's the same thing with Marion, if either of these guys can start hitting their open 3's close games with blowouts and games close game we lose will turn into wins

By the same token, he basically blew I think four completely wide open threes in the second half alone. Dude isn't an NBA level shooter in my opinion. He's slow too and makes bad decisions. I think we'd be better off without him. But, I'm no expert.
