Memphis Grizzlies trade Rudy Gay to Toronto

We could easily imo swing a trade that makes a lot of sense for us/OKC/Memphis if all they want is cap relief.

Cavs trade: Andy/Boobie/Luke
Cavs recieve: Gay/Lamb/Perkins

OKC trade: Perkins/Lamb/Jones
OKC recieve: Varejao

Memphis trade: Gay
Memphis receive: Luke/Boobie/Jones

With this we also recieve the option to swap with MEMPHIS our pick/TOR pick, whichever is better.

Edit: Basically OKC, and Memphis both save money, but Memphis saves 10's of millions, and recieves a lotto pick (ours or TOR's).

We wouldn't make the playoffs with that roster imo, but we'd be watchable...

if okc were willing to agree to a varejao for raps 1st-based trade i'd rather just cut memphis out.

cavs are still real real bad and need more v young/cheap talent.

if they are receiving the toronto pick as he noted, it is not at all a bad deal for them.

Yeah me too, but if Gay could be had, imo you have to do it. He's not a LeBron talent, but he's on the teir below guys like Melo, and is still a relatively young guy, who can give you 20ppg. When LeBron was still here I was begging for us to try and nab him, of course that didn't happen. I still like Gay, and personally I think if you can get him for anything outside of our young three, and our pick this year (top 5), then you do it.

Rudy Gay's contract is $16.5M, $17.9M, $19.3M

Having a down year, doesn't shoot the 3 well, more of a scorer than shooter questionable decision maker.

I have no confidence guys like him will come to Cleveland and under Scott be better than they were someplace else. Because that's what you'd expect since Memphis Rudy Gay isn't good enough

I'd love us to get a player of Gay's caliber using Varejao as the main piece. Sadly, Memphis doesn't need Varejao at all. I just hope we can find talent like him elsewhere.

Hold up, Dudley + a pick for Gay? We can do better. Trade Andy for a lotto pick and fillers (maybe to Charlotte for an unprotected pick), trade that pick and Gee to Memphis for Gay. Draft either Shabazz or Noel with our pick. I can see that being an entertaining team to watch.

Agreed. You are essentially trading two starters for someone who is not currently living up to their contract and for a prospect who may or may not pan out, and this team is already lacking depth.

I think its time for the Cavs to get Gay :chuckles:

His massive contract is up the same year as Kyrie and TT. So we wouldn't be hurting financially. The thought of having these 3 in a contract year about the time we should be competing is a scary thought. Not sure if he will get another max, but playing with Kyrie may entice him to take a fair pay cut on his next deal where he will be 29 going into it. From a play standpoint he fits perfectly as our 2nd option, and frees dion to play as a 3rd option. Gay will take a lot of pressure of Dion and kyrie.

If they really want cap space, send them Walton, Casspi, Andy, and a lotto protected first thats unprotected nxt yr. throw in the Kings waste of a pick or multiple 2nds.

What I dont get is, memphis is only 4 mil above the luxury tax can compete for an nba championship, why move your max contract sf?? The revenue generated from playoff games will more than cover the taxes paid. They're salary even goes down next yr.

I hate how we constantly pass on players who can make help us compete thinking we can find something else somewhere.
We haven't found anything outside of the league handing us two #1 picks.....
Why not go after a star caliber SF who is locked up in a max? Then he can't leave....?

Teams like Boston or GS will land Gay and of course outbid us. I saw a rumor with a package of Barnes and a 1st for Gay. GS should land Gay.
