Memphis Grizzlies trade Rudy Gay to Toronto

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Rudy Gay being shopped by Grizz

Teams like Boston or GS will land Gay and of course outbid us. I saw a rumor with a package of Barnes and a 1st for Gay. GS should land Gay.

That just seems way too much for R.Gay. I can understand ONE first round pick and maybe an expiring contract, but a first round pick plus another young first round rookie like Barnes? Plus I don't think its really about the salary cap, I just think Memphis isnt that high on Gay anymore...

I mean I guess GS should land Gay if they've totally lost their fucking minds. I'd bet my soul they wouldn't do that.

It's really that much when u factor in the warriors being championship contenders and the pick being mid to late 20s possibly. Gay is better than Barnes an ups GS chances. But anyways. I see PHX offering their 1st and Dudley. I'll take PHXs 1st.

Essentially giving up a #7 and a #20-#24 pick for Rudy Gay? And thats overpaying? I dunno seems fine to me.

Based on the fact that Golden State's current salary is $71 million and next year goes up to $74 million before even considering adding Gay. If they added Gay, their luxury tax for the 2013-2014 season would exceed $80 million on top of their nearly $90 million payroll. Some serious salary dumping would be required for GS to even sniff at adding Gay's contract.

I think the new luxury tax is the culprit behind the Grizzlies' desire to trade Gay. Where last year they would pay $14 million for being that high over the cap, this year they are going to fork over $26 million. Dumping Gay saves them $17.8 million in salary and $26 million in taxes for a total of $44 million dollars savings this year alone. Even for a billionaire this is a lot of money.

Makes sense, Gay will be very popular in the Bay Area

I'm not sold at all on them being legit contenders... they turn the ball over a lot and they give up 99 ppg to opposing teams. They have very little depth at center, especially with Bogut being hampered by that ankle. Harrison Barnes is still young and inexperienced, and he is their starting 3. Really, they have little depth at almost every position except for point guard and power forward, where they have Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry as backups, respectively.

At the 3, they have a rotation of Barnes and the corpse of Richard Jefferson backing him up. At the 2, they have Klay Thompson who shoots the 3 well but is a volume scorer. Obviously we know what Curry brings to the table at the 1, same as Lee at the 4.

tl;dr version: They don't play enough defense, take care of the ball enough, or have enough depth (especially in the middle) to be legitimate championship contenders. I think they will probably end up as a 4th or 5th seed, but I don't see this team making it any further than the second round.

Re: Rudy Gay being shopped by Grizz

Rudy Gay is not a difference maker. The guy is scoring 17 points per game on 17 shots(14.9 PER current, 17.8 career high PER), doesn't play terrific defense, and has very limited court vision. The grizz have had way more success without him than with. To make matters worse he is owed a ton of cash. The grizz are very smart to shop him and any team would be foolish to want to deal for him.

Re: Rudy Gay being shopped by Grizz

We already have Rudy Gay on this team on affordable contract.. Other than the shot attemps damn near identicle accept our "Rudy Gay" shoots at higher %'s

Yet people want to trade for Rudy.. crazy talk just crazy.
I wouldn't go that far, but Rudy is not a guy who will propel us to relevance. He is however paid like a player who is capable of it.

Re: Rudy Gay being shopped by Grizz

People need to kiss the LeBron Luxury Tax era goodbye because Gilbert knows from a player developmental standpoint, the Cavs are 2-3 years away from being a team that can get to the 2nd or third round of the playoffs.

He's not spending money on players to barely make the playoffs and get swept in the first round.

But, Gilbert will keep charging you $$ as if this is a playoff bound team though.

i wish i could thank this post a million times

rudy gay is a prime example of a guy living off his name who has never really been as good as the majority seemed to think. he doesn't excel anywhere, and his attitude does not at all suggest he's ever going to live up to the hype. just another lazy player who puts up empty stats and doesn't contribute to a teams title aspirations.

i think memphis is gonna rape some team in a trade, too. it's always interesting to see a smart, forward thinking team just completely bend over a clueless gm. i just hope grant doesn't end up being the victim.

Re: Rudy Gay being shopped by Grizz

I think that is the first time anyone has ever referred to Memphis as a smart forward thinking teams.

you're right. they didn't get one of the best PFs in the league for peanuts when every other team undervalued him. they didn't capitalize on their aging vet for a mid-draft gem who is now a top 5 center. they didn't nab a good starting pg in the top 10 of a draft littered with busts. they didn't sign one of the most elite defensive players in the league to a measly 3yr/$10M contract.

memphis hasn't been perfect, but they've been right far more than they've been wrong. they've really only had issues with drafting, but not at all trade-wise. and their current team, as is, might even end up being better than any roster the cavs trot out in the next 5 years. so...yeah.

edit: they also managed to do it all while remaining financially responsible, relatively speaking. any team that wants to contend is gonna pay a lot in salary, but memphis did it without spending $85-90M like some teams must do.

How many rings? How far in the play-offs? Their Salary was 84 million last year, about as close to 85 as you can get. Memphis First round exit last year, second round exit the year before.. thats going backwards.

Sorry dude I just cant get with you behind Memphis. Call it a difference in opinion.
