Mike Pettine

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Obviously doesn't give you the option to embed, but video of Pettine's first day in Berea, meeting Hoyer, etc.:

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/medi...In_Berea/f7923732-2843-46e9-bcf5-aa0f35a9fbb9

Something unnerving, though, at the 0:31 second mark... He meets Ray Farmer for the first time?

Edit: Understanding that Farmer's primary responsibility has been scouting and player acquisition it makes sense to divide and conquer on the in-house responsibilities. Still, though, I would have expected the two men to have at least shook hands before the hire. :chuckles:

Of the names tossed around for OC it looks like Kubiak is the best option right now.

The offensive line really only has 1 position locked in for next year so that can be adapted pretty quickly, and he's had successful offenses with different levels of quarterback (from hall of fame caliber to thorough mediocrity). In the event that a franchise caliber quarterback doesn't come in Kubiak would seem to have a solid chance to build an offense to suit Brian Hoyer or any other lower tier QB that may be on the roster next year.

Hasn't Farmer been on the road first interviewing in Miami and then scouting at the Sr Bowl?

Farmer and Pettine were both in Mobile scouting the Senior Bowl - also the site of the initial interviews.

Gase (and many other potential candidates) are in no position in their career where they should need to be "sold" on taking the job. It should be the other way around and I'm pretty happy that in the end, they went the direction of a guy who didn't need to be told why he should take it.

I don't have a problem with a guy having to be "sold" on the job. Any candidate who doesn't have some concerns/questions about the job is just desperate. Unless you're hiring a guy as HC who is motivated solely by money -- and I'd be really leery of that -- the quality of the opportunity can and should matter.

What's wrong with "I'd love to be a head coach, and this is a great opportunity, but I have some real concerns. Are the GM and team President going to dictate who I can and can't play? What is my voice in terms of personnel decisions? How much freedom do I have to select my coordinators and coaches? Are you going to give me enough time to turn this thing around" etc. etc.

Those all seem to be perfectly legitimate questions that amount to the team having to "sell" the job to the candidate.

Interesting tweet.

"Son of Bum" is a dumb ass. Browns and Bills now have DC vacancies. He has some history in Buffalo, as well FWIW.

Wade Phillips. :chuckles:

LOL

And they'd have absolutely deserved it.

I actually wonder if he's saying this to make the situation look better for the Browns. As if to say, candidates are supposed to withdraw their names after interviews which don't immediately result in a job.

I'm glad everyone on here is excited about the hire. I will say he's one of the best DC candidates out there for a HC job, and I really hope it works out. But I'm not feeling the same celebratory passion everyone else here is. I'm incredibly skeptical of this organization, I'm still waiting to see what the fallout will be if/when Haslam is officially indicted (which supposedly is likely to happen in the next few months) and I honestly don't think people fully appreciate just how much of a shitstorm that may cause. On Pettine,

I think HC hires are not an exact science, and he may very well work out great or wash out terribly. If our plan is to pair a new HC with a young QB like Manziel, I can't help but feel that is the makings of a disaster. And before everyone clamors about Hoyer and his ability to lead the team for a year, I'd like to point out our OC was Norv Turner. Whatever your feelings on Turner, he has a history of getting above average play out of average QBs, and Hoyer's success in Turner's system isn't necessarily indicative of his ability in another system. He did, after all, look terrible in a limited sample size in Arizona.

Pettine and Banner are saying the right things right now, as you'd expect them to. Pettine is right when he says nothing matters until September, I really hope it works out. If money was on the table though, I'd bet against it.
