Why?

Why is this even a rumor/question. This is the stuff that pisses me off about the Browns. I don't care if it's true or not, why is there confusion here?

Well, if Britton is wrong, there may not be confusion. He didn't specifically state it's from a team source, so we don't know who his source is..

If it is from a team source, I'd agree there'd be something to question, but if not, I don't see the big deal.

Banner came out & said it was a 5 year deal publicly, so it's not like he's trying to hide anything or being secretive.. If he had not said anything regarding the length of the deal, it'd be a different story.

Couldn't that just be a technicality issue? Do the put option years on coaches contracts? Like a 4 year deal with a team option for the 5th.

"Despite what the CEO said, our sources say..."

Really? We're doing this now?

Pettine just confirmed on Bull & Fox that the 5 year deal is an inaccurate report.

Will not speak to the details of the actual contract yet.

Pettine on Bull & Fox:

-Didn't see becoming the Browns new head coach coming at the beginning of the off-season. The Browns phone call changed everything. Was well worth it in the end.

-It didn't get to the point of wanting to withdrawal, but it was getting there. Was worried with all the decisions the Bills had to make if he would've left & anyone who would be following him to Cleveland. He didn't want to put the Bills in a situation where they were scrambling for hiring coaches. If it would've went past the Super Bowl, it probably would've gotten to that point.

-After the 1st interview is when he thought he had a legit shot & that it was real. He had a great interview, the 4 1/2 - 5 hours flew by & he had instant chemistry with the front office (specifically mentioned Lombardi & Haslam)

-"Talk is cheap". Wants to assemble a staff that are great teachers & can communicate with the players. Wants to get the players' expectations to match the coaches'.

-Not worried about "winning the players over". They'll see quickly that the staff he puts together will truly care about them not only on the field, but off of it as well. Once they see how much they want to win & how passionate they are, he's confident the players will buy in.

-Can't comment on the contract situation. It's not a 5 year deal, but doesn't want to comment on contract situation.

-Didn't talk about specific players in this draft in any of the interviews. 1st priority is to put the staff together & evaluate the current roster.

-All 32 teams have to make sure they're set at QB. Some teams have them, a lot don't. QB driven league. There's a QB, then a big drop off to the next priority position. Will study it, will know what they have in house, then evaluate & see what they have in the draft/FA.

-Absolutely open to bringing in guys he hasn't worked with before. There will be a nationwide search for the best staff available. Does have interest in some guys he has a prior relationship with.

-Offense predicated on toughness. Want to be creative, unpredictable, give D's fits. Doesn't want to label offense - I.E "WCO, etc". Will apply the same philosophies he has defensively to the other side of the ball as well.

-Open to whatever will win. When you handcuff yourself with "labels" at positions & systems (IE power rushing attack, WCO, etc), you get yourself in trouble.

-Didn't pay much attention to the reports of FO being "toxic". Nothing came out of that in meetings and with the research he did on them.

-Hopes his passion is the thing that most stands out to others. Football is his life blood. Focused, very detail oriented.

Will listen again & fill in the blanks I left.

I got a comfortable feeling when he said: "These players are going to know that we care about them - not just on the field, but off of it as well."

That is how you get players to run through a wall for you.

Oy. :shakehead

Had it coming, I suppose..

It's just unbelievable. I LOVE the Browns but crap like this pisses me off. Why is the length of contract a point of confusion between the new head coach and the team president? Both are on record contradicting each other a day apart. How in the hell does that happen?

Clear lack of communication and direction.

Not a guess.

Potentially could be that the deal was reached in principle yesterday at the time of the press conference, but the details are still being negotiated. It seems to me that the length of the deal is a doozy and would have already been agreed to, but that is the only explanation I can think of that isn't "Banner is an idiot and doesn't know." Banner is a lot of things, but oblivious to numbers is not one of them.

Does anyone have Banner's direct quote from yesterday, would be curious to re-examine the full context.

Front office detractors definitely jump the gun.. Again.

Absolutely ridiculous that people run to their "sources" to try to defame the Browns.
