Mike Pettine

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Team playing with confidence is a testament to their head coach.

With that said, we've all seen it before. When Pettine continues to have his team playing confident over the long haul is when I'll start to be impressed.

Great accidental hire by the organization thus far, IMO.

He's not an accidental hire. They thought enough of the guy that they decided to offer him the job even though they still wanted to interview another candidate, because they didn't want to risk losing him.

Considering the number of people they interviewed -- and that's not counting Wisenhunt -- they deserve credit (if he turns out) for selecting Pettine as the best option among all those guys.

The best option after the other guys they viewed as better options turned them down.

Keep doing you, Pett.

Gotta say, the Kyle Shannahan hire by Pettine has been fantastic so far. I know he came in with a lot of baggage from Washington, but he's gotten the offense to perform incredibly well so far given the absolute lack of receiving talent. And when the Browns inevitably turn to Manziel, the offense he has now is a good fit for Manziel's limitations.

Let's say theoretically that Hoyer proves to be an Alex Smith type for the entirety of the year. So theoretically, the type of guy that will perform as a solid game manager type for another 6-7 years. He won't lose you any games, he'll run a solid two minute drill and he'll probably win you 3-4 on his own.

Would you guys trade Manziel if Hoyer plays above this level for the rest of this year and next year? And if so, what would you expect in return for him?

Personally, I'd rather see Hoyer for the next two years than what I suspect Manziel is capable of for that same period of time. Just wonder whether the Browns are willing to sit him for two years.

I'd love to see Manziel traded for a 2nd rounder next year, but I highly doubt the organization would sour on him that quickly and even moreso...doubt a team would be willing to give up more than a 3rd or 4th.

Unless Manziel shows no development in the class room and in practice, there I don't see a reason to get rid of him.

Start Hoyer until it's obvious Manziel is ready.

Seems kind of pointless to give up on Manziel so quickly. I mean, if you can get a great pick for him and Hoyer looks good, you should probably do it. But otherwise, it would make the most sense to keep playing Hoyer as long as the team continues to win games with him under center. You can still keep and develop Manziel, who is still there as an option if Hoyer gets hurt or starts to play poorly.

Unless you're going to bring in a different young quarterback to allow to develop while Hoyer starts, you might as well keep Manziel.

I'm not a fan of trading Manziel. Sure, if a 2nd rounder is on the table, you think long and hard.. That's not the reality of it, though. I really hope that Hoyer can at least keep Manziel off the field this season.. Going into training camp next year, if Manziel beats out Hoyer, then he beats out an established Hoyer..

The Browns don't have Hoyer signed for next year, though, so this conversation is far too premature.

I want, just once, to develop a QB the way it was meant to be done...

How can you put a value on a player whose intangible qualities cannot be quantified?

Scholars will study this long after Manziel's bust is resting comfortably in Canton.

If hoyer already establishes himself as the leader of this team (which I think he has) there's no chance he can get beat out in camp.. Hoyers earned it. He's our teams QB going forward. If someone comes in and outplays tom Brady in camp, you don't bench him.. Hoyer has proved to be a winner and has the respect of the the team. He can't and won't get best out unless he completely falls apart the rest of the season (not happening)

You compared Brian Hoyer to Tom Brady and went on to say that there is no way Hoyer falls off after having a few slightly above average games against teams with question marks all over the place on the defensive side of the ball. You're speaking in absolutes based on your opinion...big no-no when talking sports.

Easy way to look foolish in a couple of months. I'm not saying that I think Manziel starting this season is likely, but it is not at all difficult to imagine a scenario where this would be the logical choice.

No. Smith basically did nothing until he was surrounded by a very good team, and outside of one career year, has been mediocre. He's the kind of guy you start only until you find someone better, and I'd want to find out if Manziel is better before trading him. I do like Smith as an example of Hoyer's upside, though.

Hoyer already shown he knows what he's doing... It's not like a bad quarter back having some games with big numbers. There's literally no way hoyer just randomly stops knowing how to play. And please don't tell me what to do

Have we seen how Hoyer is able to adjust to defenses after they have 5-6 weeks of film on him? What about cold weather? Have we seen that yet? What if the running game gets stuck in the mud and our play action is no longer effective? Can hoyer stand in and make those tight throws?

There are so many unanswered questions, and it is foolish to speak in absolutes at this time. Giving advice is not the same thing as telling someone what to do.

I never ever ever in absolute unless I'm 150% sure of something. It's something I rarely do because I take accountability and realize different variables. Trust me. I'm just certain that hoyer is this teams QB going forward. The team just rallies around him, and he's abfucking winner. And not many QBs would have done as much as hoyer with the players he's had on offense the last 2 weeks.
