MLB - Trade Rumors and Speculation

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This should have been a "contending year" also and they didn't do anything except try to capture lightning in the bottle with broken down vets. What is going to be different about next year?

Eventually, this team has to set up a small window and go for it. I thought the Ubaldo trade was a signal that they were ready to go for it, then they didn't make any meaningful moves in the offseason. They are straddling the fence between trying to compete right now and build for the future and it's just spitting out a mediocre product with little promise moving forward. Either they make some moves to try to be a legit threat next season before key members start walking in FA or they are looking at another mini rebuild. It's time to pick a course and go with it.

"Going for it" doesn't mean being overly active/aggressive in free agency, that's just not smart...

If they aren't going to fill any holes with legit players in FA, then they need to sell. They don't have anybody in the minors ready to step up and this team as currently composed is a .500 team at best. I know you love to tout them being "smart", but all their intelligence and saving money in FA is producing boring, middle of the road teams that nobody wants to watch. When you can't draft or develop your own players, you are in trouble. When you don't have money to spend in FA on top of that, you are basically screwed.

I'd love to hear how next year is going to be any different than this one if they stand pat.

I wouldn't mind if they traded Perez. Teams tend to overpay for closers. The most recent situation that comes to mind is the Red Sox trading Josh Reddick for Andrew Bailey. Knowing how inconsistent relievers can be from year to year, how infrequently closers appear, and the fact that we have Vinny Pestano, it would make sense to trade Perez this year.

They still wouldn't have had enough to do anything.

Even if Youklis continues to play well...

Now 3 for his last 21, including 1-13 (with 6 K's & 0 BB) in the Detroit series in which they got swept.

7-37 over his last 9 games.

Since his hot 5-12 start, he's hitting .257.

Since the trade, he's hitting 11-23 at home, .206 on the road.

Cleveland isn't attracting legit players through free agency.

You can sell it to whoever you want, but the same is true in all three Cleveland sports.

Trying to force something that isn't there through free agency doesn't make sense from either perspective.

If you don't have enough in the farm system, you work on the farm system. Simple as that.

Chris Perez and Choo are the guys they need to look at moving. The bullpen is the one unit that appears to have some quality depth and Perez will price himself out of here shortly. I'd sell high on him. Choo is basically in the same boat. Unless they are serious about winning next year (and I mean serious, not just saying they are serious), then it might be time to cash in on him also. He will likely leave in FA after next season and should be able to bring a nice haul with the way he has bounced back to his old self over the last couple of months.

Those two should be able to net you several at or near major league ready talents. This team still has a bunch of holes to fill and they don't have the money to plug them in FA. I think Perez could be filled in for with very minimal drop in results, especially if Allen is legit and can take on Pestano's role. There really is nobody ready to replace Choo at this time, but the high level minors cupboard is pretty bare and needs to be stocked.

the bigger question is WHAT those holes are that need to be addressed

our bullpen is our strength

our starting pitching has been horribly inconsistent - Ubaldo, Lowe, Tomlin , Masterson and your favorite AAA flavor of the week won't get it done even in the Central

I agree we probably won't see a drop off if we trade Perez

Replacing Choo will be a bigger issue, leaving us an OF of Brantley, Damon, Duncan and Cunningham and no one near ready in the upper minors

I'll agree we need to restock as most like me are still waiting for a player drafted under Shapiro's watch to significantly contribute

1B. DH. 2 outfielders. 2 or 3 starters.

This team has a lot of holes. There isn't a single guy in the rotation that looks like a sure thing to be above average. Masterson's inconsistency probably pushes him into a MOR role as opposed to an ace. Ubaldo is just the new Fausto. You hope he can slip through 6 without blowing up. Lowe is finished. Tomlin is a #5. Gomez and McAllister are wild cards. They show some flashes of being MOR potential, but then blow up out of nowhere. If they don't pan out, we are in pretty big trouble.

You aren't going to fix all of those holes. Too much for a team with our limitations. I'd aim for 2 improvements to the lineup and one improvement to the starting rotation. That combined with strong years from the guys we consider core and a couple break out performances and we could be in the mix next year.

That being said, it'll be difficult to plug those holes without trading away talent that creates holes at other positions. Whiffing on the Sabathia and Lee deals is really hurting right now. You can't trade two Cy Young winners and only have Brantley to show for it in the long run.

Carlos Quentin just signed an extension in San Diego.

agreed we need more starting pitching even if we had not traded for Ublado I doubt if we had been in much better shape with White/Pomeranz

the bigger question is who would be ideal trading partners if we deal Choo or Chris Perez -i.e. who has an excess of starters or young OFers that need would covet Choo or Perez

teams that Chris Perez could be a fit might include
1) Mets - someone mentioned them in another thread -they have 3 young arms in Zack Wheeler, Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia
2) Angels - Kendry Morales, Peter Bourjos and Garret Richards may be available now that the Angels are gelling

I see Choo going to a big market team who has a win now attitude like the Giants , Dodgers , Yankees or the Red Sox that don't mind trading what prospects they have left.

So SF is interested in CP. You have to trade him if a good offer comes along, right? I mean, hasn't it been proven that you sell your closer when they are at their best? If we don't, we may end up with a Soria, Bailey, or Bell.

Grady coming back will be just the spark the Indians are looking for, and this will be the spin the FO will make at the deadline..

People apparently think the Indians have a shitty below average team, but that a couple deadline moves make them contenders.

If I'm the Indians, I'm not moving any prospects this year...Especially if they're as shitty as everyone says.

What's the downside? Fans stop showing up....Oh wait

I disagree, with all the games we play against Central Division teams, a few moves could help us out and we could make a comeback in the division.

I am not sure how good this Is for the tigers. This does now mean If the Indians do not do anything and leave this crap we have no In place I think I am done with this team for a year or two. Not because I am raging over this team anymore. More so the Indians have nothing worth watching or nothing to get excited about. I hope I am wrong as of now this team will not make the play offs with teams getting better In our division.

They traded Jacob Turner.
